GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Advent Reading and Wreath Lighting

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: The light shines in the darkness,
All: We come to worship, seeking the light of Christ once again.
One: Shine into our lives and into your world this Advent.
All: Renew us with fresh hope as we worship you.
*Hymn
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appears.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!
O come, Thou Day spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

2
O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife, and discord cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!
Prayer of Confession
God of hope, we confess that we often prefer accepting half-truths and
pleasing ideas, rather than your challenging word. We praise our own
cleverness rather than your wisdom. We have exploited others for our
benefit and used the earth without a thought for its wellbeing. In your
mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct
who we shall be through the mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Receive the Good News in hope. With great mercy, God forgives what
we have confessed and offers us new life in Christ. Trust in the hope that
you are forgiven and that, with God, new things are possible.
All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!
PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Isaiah 2:1-5
The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In
days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the
highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall
stream to it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the
mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his
ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
3
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations,
and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into
plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword
against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Is 2:1–5). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Reading from the Epistles

Romans 13:11-14
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake
from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers;
12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of
darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us live honorably as in the day, not
in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in
quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no
provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Ro 13:11–14). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Reading from the Gospel

Matthew 24:36-44
“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor
the Son, but only the Father. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered
the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away,
so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two will be in the field; one
will be taken and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding meal together;
4
one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not
know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of
the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would
have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an
unexpected hour.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. AMEN.
Invitation to Giving
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication
Family Choir
My Hope is Built on Nothing Less
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Refrain
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand,
all other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.
refrain

His oath, his covenant, his blood

support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain

When he shall come with trumpet sound,

O may I then in him be found,
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne.
refrain

Intercessory Prayer of the People

All: Hear our prayer
The Lord’s Prayer
GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Lift Up Your Head, Ye Mighty Gates

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates,

Behold the King of glory waits;
The King of kings is drawing near;
The Savior of the world is here!
Fling wide the portals of your heart;
Make it a temple, set apart
From earthly use of heaven’s employ,
Adorned with prayer, and love, and joy.
Redeemer, come! I open wide
My heart to Thee; here, Lord, abide.
Let me Thy inner presence feel;
Thy grace and love in me reveal.
Benediction
