Unit 63: Electrical Power

Assessment and Grading (H.N.C)

To achieve a pass the student must demonstrate the ability to:
Yes

No

Yes

No

Outcome 2 Criteria
P2.1 identify typical sources of harmonics in a power system
P2.2 explain the effects of harmonics in power systems
P2.3 evaluate at least four different methods of mitigation of
harmonics

To achieve a merit the student must demonstrate the ability to:

Merit Criteria
M2
select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques
Indicative Characteristic: a range of sources of information has been used
Further Guidance
You must show evidence of research from a range of sources. This will take the form of
a suitable bibliography and also include an appendix with appropriate print-outs from
external sources that have been discussed as part of your descriptions.

To achieve a distinction the student must demonstrate the ability to:

Yes

No

Distinction Criteria
D2
take responsibility for managing and organising activities
Indicative Characteristic: autonomy/independence has been demonstrated

Further Guidance
Describe how an organised and structured approach was used in working on this
assignment. Students will need to demonstrate their ability to work independently using
their own initiative and with minimum supervision from the lecturer. This could include
the use of a target setting sheet and Gantt chart to plan and monitor assignment
progress.

Unit 63: Electrical Power

Scenario
You are a Design Engineer for a company that supplies equipment for use in
factory automation systems. A new product is currently under development. Your
manager has requested that you investigate the impact of harmonics and how
their effects could be mitigated.
Task 1 Sources of Harmonics (P2.1)
(a) Use a diagram to briefly describe harmonics in a power system?
(b) Use diagrams and sketches to explain how harmonic distortion originates from
each of the following:
i.
Transformers
ii.
DC PSUs
iii.
General non-linear loads

Task 2 Effects of Harmonics (P2.2)

Harmonics in three phase electrical power systems are considered to have a
detrimental effect. Explain what these effects are.

Task 3 Mitigation (P2.3)

(a) In a three phase power system what methods can be used to mitigate the effects
of harmonics? Evaluate at least four different methods.

(b) Describe the standards that apply in the UK.

Important Notes:
1. Use diagrams and images to illustrate your answers where appropriate.
2. It is not acceptable to copy information from other resources as the
answer to the questions. This is obviously meaningless! You are expected
to obtain the information, analyse them and describe / explain in your
own words to show that you understand the subject.
3. This assignment is intended to represent the individual effort of each
student. Consequently identical materials must not be shared between
students as it will be considered as plagiarism and the college disciplinary
procedure will be invoked.
4. Images and quotations may be used from other sources as part of your
answer. However full credit must be given to the source of information.
5. Avoid the use of Wikipedia as the only source of information.
6. Use the Harvard Referencing System.
