Scenario
You are a Design Engineer for a company that supplies equipment for use in
factory automation systems. A new product is currently under development. Your
manager has requested that you investigate the impact of harmonics and how
their effects could be mitigated.
Task 1 Sources of Harmonics (P2.1)
(a) Use a diagram to briefly describe harmonics in a power system?
(b) Use diagrams and sketches to explain how harmonic distortion originates from
each of the following:
i.
Transformers
ii.
DC PSUs
iii.
General non-linear loads
Important Notes:
1. Use diagrams and images to illustrate your answers where appropriate.
2. It is not acceptable to copy information from other resources as the
answer to the questions. This is obviously meaningless! You are expected
to obtain the information, analyse them and describe / explain in your
own words to show that you understand the subject.
3. This assignment is intended to represent the individual effort of each
student. Consequently identical materials must not be shared between
students as it will be considered as plagiarism and the college disciplinary
procedure will be invoked.
4. Images and quotations may be used from other sources as part of your
answer. However full credit must be given to the source of information.
5. Avoid the use of Wikipedia as the only source of information.
6. Use the Harvard Referencing System.
