L&S 129: WORK PRACTICUM AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Course Syllabus
Summer aka Intersession, School Year 2015-2016, 8:00-11:00 a.m.
T. S. DAVID, Ph.D. (tsdavid@alumni.stanfordgsb.org)

I.

DESCRIPTION
This course combines scholarly literature and practical experience as it presents cutting-edge
models on work and career development. It immerses seniors in a meaningful summer
practicum in the corporate jungle, government sector, entrepreneurial field, or academic setting
for at least 200 hours. Students aspiring for a minor in HR are required to work in one or more
areas (recruitment, payroll and benefits, talent management, etc.) of the Human Resources
division during the stipulated time.
This lifelong leadership journey starts with a deepening of ones self-awareness. The challenge
is to align ones passion, talents, need, and conscience. Reflections focus on the relationship
between ones ideal job and desired career. Hopefully, at the end of the session, the seniors
shall echo Dave and Wendy Ulrichs mindset: I feel differently about the meaning of my work if
I see myself as bricklayer than if I see myself as building a cathedral to God.

II.

OBJECTIVES
You will be able to:

experience different work-based settings and reflect on choices, mission, and priorities;

imbibe the whole person in a whole job philosophy while calibrating your mission,
vision, and values; and

sharpen work-based skills, such as:

story telling and empathic listening (two sides of communications)
writing contribution statements
prioritizing QII and addressing QI activities
integrating FQ into the multiple intelligences
appraising ones performance.

ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR SUMMER OR INTERSESSION!

VI. SCHOOL AND DEPARTMENTAL CLASSROOM POLICIES

The JGSOM Dress Code will be strictly enforced. The Student Handbook serves as the
guide.
Intellectual honesty is to be upheld at all times. Plagiarism merits an F as final grade
for the subject.
Teacher will inform the beadle(s) and/or the class in cases of unavoidable absence or
tardiness.
Discipline, courtesy, and respect for everyone:
(a) Kindly keep mobile phones on silent mode.
(b) Please request permission to bring in a guest.
(c) Use of laptops: devoted only to note taking of the lecture (in other words, no multitasking,
i.e., Facebooking, Twittering, etc.)
No make-up class or assignments for absence(s) as the summer or intersession is short (only
six meetings). One absence=B highest possible final grade; two absences=C highest possible
grade; three absences=F (dropped from the course). The consequences are based on the
critical need for community building and interaction given the limited time during the summer or
intersession.
