Career Statement

I intend to continue my studies at university through to my third

year without taking a placement year. I am going to do this as I
want to gain my Ba Hons in PR and Marketing as fast as
possible, so I can progress onto doing an MBA. I am aware that
not having a placement year may look bad to some potential
employers; however I plan to have a yearlong part time
placement during my final year and continue to work for the
Leeds Met SU PR department to gain knowledge of how PR
departments are set up and work from the top. It also allows me
the freedom to find and create my own campaigns.

I wish to progress on to do an MBA as I enjoy, and am more

curious about the business side of things. I also do not wish to
specialize too much as I do not want to limit my potential career
options at this point. I am also very interested in starting my
own business, and am aware that Leeds Met offer good
discounts and subsidies to Leeds Met graduates who do start
their own business.

Should in my third year I find that starting my own business is

not something I want to do at this time ideally I would be able to
gain a place on a good graduate program when I complete my
MBA that involves some elements of PR and some elements of
management. I see myself potentially using my PR experience
as a method to win new clients for businesses rather than
writing press releases.

I plan on taking a year out after my MBA to go travelling and

volunteer abroad, it is something that I am doing this summer in
Thailand to help build an orphanage and is something I would
like to continue. The idea of seeing the world and living among
different cultures is also something that motivates me and I
yearn to explore the world.

At this time however I can be relatively certain that I will not be

graduating from university and starting up as an intern at a PR
agency, while I value and enjoy things I have learnt on my
course and the experience it has given me I do not think it is
something I wish to spend my life in. I have found that the way
the course is structured and the way it is industry focused to be
extremely useful into giving an insight into the real world of PR
and also giving good experience at real businesses so new
graduates are not sent out into the world with no real
experience in proper working environment. This course prepares
people well to avoid that, and is something that I have exploited
and value highly.
