in!the!City!of!Oakland.!
Dispatchers!answer!more!than!
750,000!calls!annually,!and!
dispatch!an!average!of!290,000!
calls!for!service.!Divide!those!numbers!by!the!current!
staffing!of!!70!and!you!have!a!lot!of!hardworking!
individuals.!In!addition!to!answering!incoming!calls!from!
citizens,!dispatchers!run!warrant!checks,!order!tows,!
research!past!incidents,!and!numerous!other!search!and!
monitoring!requests.!

Week.!During!this!time,!our!great!Nation!honors!the!women!
and!men!in!the!Public!Safety!Dispatcher!profession.!The!
OPD!Communication!Division!shows!its!appreciation!by!
nominating!one!dispatcher!from!each!watch;!of!the!
three!nominees,!one!is!selected!as!Dispatcher!of!the!Year.!
This!year!the!nominees!being!honored!are:!1st!Watch!Phyllis!
Smith,!#67,!2nd!Watch!Dilma!Johnson,!#61,!and!3rd!Watch!
Sharon!Gray,!#66.!The!winner!of!the!Dispatcher!of!the!Year!

Community!Feedback

#I!want!to!sincerely!thank!each!and!every!officer!
of!the!Oakland!Police!Department.!It!has!been!a!
year!since!4!of!your!own!were!killed!on!duty.!I!
remember!that!day!like!it!was!yesterday.!What!a!
terrible,!terrible!loss.!I!like!to!think!that!the!4!of!
them!were!killed!doing!what!they!know!they!needed!to!do,!
protecting!the!community.!!I!live!in!Oakland!on!the!weekends!with!
my!boyfriend,!and!I!have!never!felt!unsafe!in!any!of!the!areas!we!go!
to.!I!hear!sirens!frequently,!and!I!smile!because!I!know!I!am!
safe.!Having!a!family!member!in!the!force,!I!have!always!had!
respect!for!officers.!That!day!in!March!of!last!year,!my!respect!
grew!more!than!I!thought!it!could.!I!cannot!imagine!the!heartbreak!
this!has!caused!your!entire!administration.!!I!just!want!the!OPD!
to!know!that!there!are!people!out!there!that!appreciate!them!for!

Oakland!Officers!Raised!Money!
and!Shave!Heads!for!Cancer!
Research
On!Friday!March12,!2010!the!Oakland!
Police!Department!participated!in!the!
St.Baldrick$s!foundation!fundraiser!for!
cancer!research!at!Children$s!Hospital.!
It!was!the!Department$s!first!time!ever!
being!a!part!of!the!event!and!we!were!honored!by!the!
invitation.!The!event!is!an!annual!fundraiser;!proceeds!fund!
childhood!cancer!research.!As!a!sign!of!solidarity!with!
children!suffering!from!cancer,!participants!were!asked!to!
raise!money!through!
sponsorships!by!family!
and!friends!and!to!shave!
their!heads!bald.!
Our!Department!was!
amazingly!represented!at!
the!event.!Over!60!sworn!
members!and!1!
Neighborhood!Services!
Coordinator!had!their!
heads!shaved.!We!had!representatives!from!all!three!areas!of!
the!City,!including!Problem!Solving!Officers,!Crime!
Redution!Team!members,!Patrol,!and!Command!staff.!The!
organizers,!children,!and!families!were!impressed!with!our!
presence.!We!showed!the!community!our!hearts!and!it!made!
an!impact!on!everyone!!

By!the!end!of!the!event,!we!had!raised!over!$18,000.!We!
were!awarded!the!"Hero!to!Hero"!challenge!award!for!the!
largest!team!and!donation!of!any!law!enforcement!agency.!This!is!
a!stunning!example!of!OPD!being!the!best!that!it!can!be,!
while!serving!the!community.
Firearms!and!Simunitions!
Training

What$s!more!fun!than!the!
Nintendo!Wii!and!an!
amusement!park!ride!put!
together,!how!about!eight!extra!hours!of!Firearms!and!
Simunition!Training.!The!Training!Section!is!currently!
conducting!a!new!and!exciting!Firearms!and!Tactics!Training!
Course!at!Concord!Range.!!The!day!starts!with!some!
distance!shooting!at!25!yards,!which!is!followed!up!by!the!
seven!basic!fundamentals!of!marksmanship.!!The!training!
then!transitions!to!shooting!while!
on!the!move.!The!range!staff!
developed!a!qualification!course!
that!incorporates!movement,!
barricade,!manipulations!and!
distance!shooting.!The!course!of!
fire!is!challenging,!but!the!
benefits!are!immeasurable.!The!last!part!of!the!day!is!all!
about!Simunition!Training!with!the!focus!on!car!stops.!The!
range!staff!has!received!several!emails!thanking!them!and!
asking!for!even!more!training.!They!even!had!a!group!of!
officers!say!were!willing!to!pay!out!of!their!own!pocket!for!
the!additional!training...Who!knows,!maybe!we!can!help!
balance!the!City$s!budget!after!all.!
