Vol. XXXV, No.2, Spring, 1991

Japan is beautiful in spring.

Magnolia and cherry blossoms are succeeded by wisteria,

azalea, pink and white phlox and dogwood. Still, we are making plans to leave by July 25th for
a six-month furlough. Our first month will be with Japanese young people in a month-long Home
Stay program. We will be able to attend our first Missionary Convention in eighteen years and
enjoy Christmas with our children and grandchildren for the first time in eight years. We in
tend to visit churches we have missed during the past several years.

Our Sannobara Church is growing.

duced each week.

New people are being intro-

Mr. and Mrs. Takao Tomono transferred their mem-

bership to our church on May 5th. She was trained by the Ray Mings
family at Nakaburi in Osaka. They are already assisting with the
Sunday School. All are enthused about our NEW FIVE YEAR BUILDING

PLAN, Our preacher and his wife welcomed a little one on April 6th.
They named her Erika.

She is the seventh child born in our church

family in the past two years- Then there are six others who are

not yet school age. We need to build. This is a good problem.

The Machida Church is also growing. Within the next three

years the church building must be moved eastward about the width
of the building in order to expedite the widening of the road. At
the same time a new road along the south side will cut down the
lot by one-third. The group hopes to be able to enlarge the church
room by adding a second floor over the living and dining areas of
the missionary's home. At present this is a veranda area.
The
plan will be subject to the approval of Central Japan Christian
Mission. Pray about this matter and that much-needed land will be-

spring. She is a member of the National Honor Society with a grade

point average of 3.93- She has won various awards in piano and

will enter the Cincinnati Bible College on a music scholarship in

the fall. Naturally her major will be in Music. Congratulations,
Karisl We pray God's leading for you all the way.

Our youngest grandchild is Douglas Matthew Sawch. He registered his footprint on March 3 1991. His parents are Mary Joyce
and Steve who live at Locust Valley, N.Y. Kathleen was present when

he came home from the hospital and for two weeks time. His older

brother, Gregory is now getting acquainted with the 'new guy*.

Praise God! The Onga Church, served by Hideto Yoshii, reports

two baptisms, recently. One was a junior high school boy and the

other a 29 year old man. He tells of still other prospects. Sannobara has called Hideto to serve as Evangelist for this October's

Evangelistic meeting. He calls himself a 'Timothy' of this church.

Dear friends,

The Sannobara Church saw attendance records broken at Christ-

ator who contacted us in Indiana last summer. Attendances remain

good in January. Mr. Nishiyama and his wife are expecting in April.

To date, aside from our Mid-week Study, we have not had adult

Bible classes for some time. With two ministers we will begin Sunday services at 10:00 AM with the grown-ups class along with the

children's Sunday School. I (Paul) will lead the adults l^~^i^d^g

the book of James while the Nishiyamas and helpers direct the kids.

Our two junior high classes meet on Sunday evenings for English and
Bible. Five of them will be going Stateside with us for one month

(July 25-Aug. 2k) for a 'home-stay' experience.

Mrs. lizuka's baptism

Sannobara's special evangelistic meeting is set for mid-February. Brother Makoto Yuse, of

Nagoya, will be our evangelist. Some of you may have attended Midwest Christian College or

Lincoln Christian Seminary with him back in the early 'BO's. Brother Nishiyama has been discipling some prospects. Pray for them and for decisions.

Kathleen is retiring from her teaching at Obirin Junior College after serving 20 years.

Her fellow foreign English teachers honored her with a party, flowers and a gift se"F~of dessert
dishes. She cannot attend the graduation nor the students' gala 'Thank You Party' for their

teachers at the Prince Hotel in Tokyo. She will be Stateside assisting Mary Joyce by caring for
Z/z year old Gregory and welcoming her ninth grandchild which is due in early March.
During the time of Kathleen's teaching she was able to witness the beginning of a dream
come true. In 1975 our son, Mark, and his wife, Lynn, came to establish the Campus Ministry
and the Machida Church. Penny Boggs, Betty Turner and her son, Tim are lined up to continue her

Bible Classes. Though we have not seen as many visible results this year as last, through our
various surveys we know of more
and more students who have come
to believe in Jesus as God's Son

and who will choose Christianity

as their religion. Let me join
with the others who have echoed,
"Well done> Kathleen!"
Our Obirin Christian Club*s

Retreat was held up in the moun

tains of Nagano Ken. One day
was set aside for skiing. No, I
have never skied.

And this was

no exception, especially after I

learned about the total cost of

all the needed equipment. By

the way, Tim Turner will be able
to assist with the Christian

Club, too, in the future.

We have .just three more years of payments toward the retirement of the Machida property

loan> However, we cannot win for losing. About the time we get that all paid off, the Machida
City Improvement Section will come to move our building over twenty-five feet and take away 1/5
of our 3i780 square foot lot. They are convincing us that the roads they will build should en
hance the community and raise the value of the property we have left.
Our Junior High Classes presented the drama of "The Good Samaritan" at our Christmas pro
gram.
Many of our friends have been asking why we Americans are so anxious to reach out to
assist other nations such as Kuwait and Saudia Arabia.

We were reminded of an incident that

happened years ago when we were in Kagoshima City. Five hundred homes were wiped out by
one cold night, just two miles from our home.

fire

We talked with a neighbor lady about how terrible

it was. I asked her where we might take clothing or blankets or money to share with the home
less. The lady replied, "Oh, we need not worry about them. They are in a different ward from
us." Remembering this experience I thought how very necessary the Samaritan story is and how

it needs to be repeated again and again in this land.

Did you know that...Mrs. Evelyn Clark has been hospitalized for several weeks, has had

brain damage and is oartiallv paraivzeA? kemember her when you, pray...that the Machida CTOrch
will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on May 5> 19915'*that Joel Likins and family are making

plans to go to Russia to follow-up on Christians who were baptized last summer? It seems like
the beginning of wonderful things...that Mark and Lynn's daughter, Karis, is a member of the
National Honor Society, will graduate from Beliefontaine COhio) High School in June and enter
Cincinnati Bible College this fall?...that Lydia's husband. Rick Coyle, is District Finance
Manager with Digital Equipment Corp. serving in Cincinnati, Ohio? He is Director of Public Re
lations with C.J.C.M... that Mary's husband, Steve Sawch, is Construction Manager of The Ameri
can Museum of Natural History in New York City?
A little child shall lead.

Mary's son, Gregory, aged 2/2, likes to sing "This Little Light

of Mine". After singing "let it shine till Jesus comes" he repeatedly asked, "Mommy, when is
Jesus coming? I want to see Jesus". In Japan it is hard for many to believe in God who is un
seen.

Kyosuke Takahashi, aged 9| asked, "Where is God? I can't see him."

His brother, Taketora,

aged
replied, "He is here, even though we can't see Him". (Taketora is the boy who had Leu
kemia whom you have been praying for.)
Miss Aki Muto, who survived the crash-landing of Flight 252 will graduate from Sophia Jr.
College in March. She has been employed by a securities company and lives out east of Tokyo in
the vicinity of Tokyo's Disneyland. Her heart is open but she has not as yet made a commitment
to Christ.

Do pray for her.

Addison Bowers says:
