Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/
can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and
sound engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets
or studio Props departments
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
Transport
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

Importance
it is very important to have control over finances when planning to film. It is also important to have
sufficient funds for the production before beginning to film. A good way of controlling finances is to
document what is spent on each of the areas you are spending in. For example, companies will spend
money on hiring equipment, transport for actors and actresses to travel between sets and locations,
hiring actors/actresses and paying them. You will also have to hire crew for the production, materials
such as props, costumes, lighting etc. And hiring locations and facilities. All these things are important
in making sure the end product is as high quality as possible, the locations, effect and costumes are
relevant to the storyline and the actors and crew are talented and committed to working on your
project. The higher quality production you are aiming for, the more you will have to spend.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
When film making, its really important to stick to timings in order to make sure the production is
completed as quickly as possible, and there is plenty of time for editing, advertising etc. To do this, it is
important to set deadlines for each stage of the filming process. to ensure everything is finished by
these deadlines, its key to make sure everyone is told and reminded about the deadlines and know the
importance of meeting each one. in terms of finances, not completing filming means you may have to
pay more money to hire the equipment for longer, or the equipment, locations and actors/actresses may
become unavailable due to requirements by another company or film project.

Sourcing
Deadlines can met by consistently reminding everybody when projects are due, or calenders making it
clear with dates and times.

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production
equipment facility houses

Importance
Facilities are an important part of producing a film because you need the right equipment in order to
make sure your production is as high quality as possible. As well as obvious essential equipment such
as lighting and sound equipment, cameras etc. some productions also require advanced equipment that
add effects to the film such as smoke machines, green screens etc. This requires hiring this equipment
or buying it. Once you have all the necessary equipment, its also important that you have somewhere to
store it all. This may require using a facility house in order to keep it all safe. This may also be where
you edit the film and were you make all the final touches to the production.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library
materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an

Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because.
If you are caught using someone else material, it can mean you

become involved in legal issues including infringement of the

copyright law and could even lead to jail time. Also, keep materials
your own means the satisfaction of knowing all the ideas behind the
production are your own and you can take complete credit for all the
success of it.
Archive material would be used because. a particular sound dub
or clip you are wanting to use already exists. e.g a documentary
may only have a source to one clip of a scene, and therefore all
documentaries may need to use this same clip if they are discussing
the same topic. this is archive material. Archive material is
important for if you want to portray a certain image or sound that
has already been created, but permission is also required. Sound
and photo librarys are also useful to look up what sounds and clips
you need.
When researching for archive clips and finding out what has and has
not been created, the internet is a really important factor. The
internet is also essential for finding everything you need to film a
production. This includes equipment, talent, transport etc.
It is also essential to find the right people to work on your
production by interviewing them face to face to find out how much
experience they have and how valuable they can be to the project.
Scripts are also essential in the process as actors and actresses
need to learn their lines before filming otherwise the film will take
too long to film. The director also needs to be aware of stage
directions so they can direct the actors were to be on stage/ what to
do etc.

Costumes also add effect as they indicate what the character is like
or what time period the film is set in.

Sourcing
Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found at.

Locations:

Recces (Upload an
example)
Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
Location recces are important in the pre production stage as it helps
decide which location is best to film in, and how to properly prepare
for filming there. It's helpful to know what risks and downsides there
are to this location, but also what equipment you will need to film

there. For example, if this area is located in a lot of shadowy trees,

you may need more lighting equipment. Or if it's windy, a
microphone that withstands wind. You may also need to consider
the safety of this area and how to fix the hazards.

Sourcing
Location recces are hand made but should contain all the
information above.

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is important to have permission to use locations otherwise it may
cause legal issues with the landowner if you do not get permission
from them. Getting clearances are also important because without
them, you may be fined.
Getting copyright for your production ensures no one else can copy
your ideas or use any of your footage. Without copyright, anyone is
allowed to use it and no legal action can be taken if they do.
Constant health and safetly regulations and checks will also have to
be enforced throughout the production process in order to make

sure no one is at risk for the duration of filming. If there are any
injuries and no health and safety regulations were in place, then
legal actions can also be taken. Risk assessments can be made to
analyse each area and evaluate the risks.
Insurance makes sure everything that could be damaged can be
replaced or covered financially so that you do not have to pay for
replacement.

Sourcing
Land permission should be written down and signed so that you
have proof of permission in case you are questioned
Clearances come in paper form and are given once the landowner
grants the permission.
