Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH)

In This Issue

Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn Child and Adolescent health (RMNCH) is one of the
most important missions of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Several
strategies have been followed by the Government of India to achieve this goal since the
past several years. The main objective of this mission is to safeguard the lives and health
of women and children in the country, especially for those residing in rural areas,
through different interventions. It aims to focus on the most vulnerable sections of the
population. RMNCH also addresses the causes of mortality among women and children
as well and the need of utilizing health care services. This mission is carried out keeping

in mind the fact that India has already more than 8 lakh ASHA workers who play a key
role in improving maternal and newborn health, nutrition, basic sanitation, prevention

of common infections and immunization.

They provide a strong platform for delivery of these services available at communities,
sub-centers and primary health centers. RMNCH directs the states to focus their efforts
towards the most disadvantaged groups of the country. Let us hope that this mission will
prove useful in strengthening our countrys efforts towards better health and improving
maternal and child health.

ASHA Training Program Update

The approach to the training has been carried out by maintaining strict compliance with the guidelines. The
trainings would consist of short lecture presentations. Most sessions would have practice of skills or small
group discussions and small assignments to be carried out. There would be field visits during the training
programme. The training program would also include examination of newborns and children as part of the
practicum and this will be done during the field work that would be undertaken by ASHA and the ASHA
facilitators between the training rounds.
