Adjectives

Grade Level/Subject: 3rd Grammar and Writing

Prerequisite Knowledge: Students will need to understand how adjectives relate to nouns and that they are
descriptive words,
Approximate Time: 30 minutes

Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: As a result of the lesson the students will be able to come up with
their own list of describing words

Materials: pencil, work sheet Page 204-205in the English Book, page 34 in the 2 nd grade grammar book,
and page 113 in the 4th grade Language and Skills book.

Content Standards:
3.A. Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and structure.
3.A.1 Construct complete sentences which demonstrate subject/verb agreement; appropriate
capitalization and punctuation; correct spelling of appropriate, high-frequency words; and appropriate use
of the eight parts of speech
4.A.1b Ask questions and respond to questions from the teacher and from group members to improve
comprehension.
4.A.1c Follow oral instructions accurately.

Implementation: The lesson and activity is able to incorporate things that students have been learning and
going over since the beginning of the school year. This will enhance their understanding for things that
will be on the ISAT.

Time

5minutes Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations)

1. Have students sit at their desk or on the carpet


2. State student expectations
3. Explain to the group that we will be talking about adjectives today.
4. Review what adjectives are.
Objective:
As a result of the lesson the students will be able to come up with their own list of describing
words

15minutes Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs

1. As a class we will look at the page on 204 and 205.


2. Practice examples will help students understand the adjectives.
3. Then students will work on a sheet.
4. Differentiated Instruction
Students will independently work on a work sheet to help
them write adjectives.
Some students will work on the fourth grade material. Pg 113
- Zach, Raymond, Sundav, Thomas
Some students will work on the second grade material. Pg 34
- Steven, Keenan, Elijah, Tequina, Myracle
Other students will be working on third grade material. Pg 205

5. Students will share their answers within their groups.

5 minutes Summary/Closing:

As a whole group we will all gather back together and discuss the answers that they have
written for one example for each group. We will choose what things are correct and
incorrect. Students will do a think pair share and one person per table will write the
answer on the board. Students will also be able to use the dictionary to help them finish
up their ideas

5 minutes Student Assessment:


While students are working on the in class assignment I will walk around and check for
Student understanding and comprehension. Students will be told to do the second worksheet
for homework or in class if they have time to work on it. I will go over the directions with them
and explain what they need to do. The following day I will grade the papers.

7. The nosy kitten had jumped into the truck.

Write three sentences about what you like to do during recess. Use
adjectives, describing words to make the sentences descriptive and fun
to read.
