Former DRDO DirectorGeneral (DG) Dr Avinash Chander has been
awarded prestigious Aryabhata Award of Astronautical Society of
India.
Hewasbestowedwiththisawardinrecognitionforhiscontributionto
missiletechnology.

He was presented with this award from Dr R Chidambaram, Principal

AvinashChanderwasthechiefarchitectofIndiasstrategicAgniseriesofballisticmissile
systemsandfamouslyisknownasAgnimanofIndia.
Range of IndiasAgni missiles were developed under his technology forecast, perspective
planningandrelentlessefforts.HesteeredthefirstthreemissionsoftheAgni5missile.
He had joined DRDO after completing graduation in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in
1972andretiredin2015aftercompletionof42yearsofdistinguishedservice.
He had served as DG of DRDO from 2013 to 2015. He also had served as Scientific
AdvisertotheUnionDefenceMinister.
Awards: He was awarded Padma Shri, AGNI SelfReliance Award (1999), Dr. Biren Roy
Space ScienceAward (2000), DRDOAward (2007), DRDO Technology LeadershipAward,
(2008).

Chemical scientist and wellknown researcher Goverdhan Mehta has been conferred with
GermanysprestigiousCrossoftheOrderofMerit(Bundesverdienstkreuz)Award.
The award was bestowed upon him by Achim Fabig, German Consul General in Chennai,
TamilNadu.

Goverdhan Mehta is former ViceChancellor of the University of
Hyderabad (UoH) from 1994 to 1998. He has authored more than 400
researchpapers.
He also had served as the Director of the IISc, Bengaluru (1998 to
2005)andwasalsoPresidentoftheIndianNationalScienceAcademy
(INSA).
At present he is the National Research Professor and LillyJubilant Chair Professor at the
UniversityofHyderabad.
He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Foreign Member of the Russian
AcademyofScience.
Awards and Honours: He has been conferred with Padma Shri, Chevalier de la Legion
dHonneur by the President of France, Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award in Chemical
SciencesandH.K.FirodiaAwardforScience&Technology.
In 1995, he became the first Indian scientist to receive the Alexander von Humboldt
ResearchAward.
