No injuries in residence hall fire BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids Department of Public Safety firefighters responded to a cooking fire at Bond Hall on the campus of Ferris State University on Thursday night. There were no injuries, according to dispatchers at Meceola Central Dispatch. The call was received at 10:21 p.m. No further details were available as of press time. MECOSTA — Area residents are encouraged to come enjoy a spaghetti dinner to help out neighbors who have fallen on desperate times. A benefit dinner is being held to help Last Bit of Hope, a charity organization that offers free household items to families who have no where else to go. The dinner will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on May 8 at the Traffic Jam Night Club in Mecosta. The dinner will feature a main dish of spaghetti with garlic bread and a salad plus drinks and dessert. During the dinner, there also will be a bake sale and an auction with items donated from local businesses. period. The course reviews basic rules of the road and the typical types of violations that occur with older drivers, such as failure to yield the right-of-way, improper left turns and entering and exiting expressways. Tips are given to improve these situations. The state of Michigan passed legislation encouraging autoinsurance companies to grant seniors (50 years and older) a discount on their auto insurance payment for successfully completing a qualified course in driver safety. People who take this course meet this requirement. Consult your insurance agent. For more information or to sign up for the course, call the Mecosta County Senior Center at (231) 972-2884. There is a $12 fee for AARP members and $14 fee for non-members. The fee helps to pay for materials. Calling also provides organizers preparation time for those attending. Tips to Get Your Move On (NewsUSA) - You’re excited to start living in your new home, but before you start decorating, entertaining or relaxing with coffee in your new breakfast nook, you have to move your possessions from point A to point B. But with a little planning, you can make your move without shattering your great grandmother’s vase or slipping a disc while carrying kitchen appliances.

least a month to pack. Start by going through your rooms and taking a quick inventory -- figure out what you need to pack, and what you’d rather freecycle. * Make sure you have plenty of packing materials. You will need more boxes than you expect. Make sure that you have 10 new boxes for lastminute additions. Other useful items include thick markers, bubble wrap, packing tape and foam wrap. PakMail sells a full line of shipping supplies, including boxes, bubble wrap, foam wrap, tape, labels, kits, packing peanuts and sealing tubes. PakMail also offers custom packaging for oddly shaped items. * Choose the right box for your item. Heavy objects, like books, should always go in smaller boxes. Certain items, such as mattresses or mirrors, may require special packaging. It’s always best to ask an expert. Try to keep boxes under 30 pounds. * Organize your packing. As you’re packing, assign each box a number. Create a list where you record everything that was put in each box. Also, decide where the boxes should go. For example, if boxes one through three contain DVDs, books and video games, make sure they end up in your new living room.

(NewsUSA) - Many women report the same story -- after menopause, they gain weight around their abdomen, no matter how little they eat or how much they exercise. These women aren’t going insane -- research suggests that menopause causes weight gain. According to Dr. Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D., designer of the Bistro M.D. weight-loss program, a recent animal experiment revealed a link between changing estrogen levels and weight gain. When estrogen levels dropped in the brain, laboratory animals gained weight around their abdomens, even when fed the same amount of food. Why? The animals developed insulin resistance, a metabolic condition that signals the body to store carbohydrates as fat, rather than use them to fuel muscles. “Insulin resistance develops in most people as they age, but women experience the onset more dramatically than men due to the hormonal changes of menopause,” explains Dr. Cederquist. Unfortunately, insulin resistance can negatively affect women’s health. Insulin resistance causes yet more insulin resistance, as the fat that accrues in the abdomen secretes hormones that encourage more fat storage, which increases insulin resistance. Abdominal fat increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke and several types of cancer. Abdominal fat increases bad cholesterol, lowers good cholesterol and releases inflammatory hormones that contribute to heart disease. Hormone replacement therapy does not help -- but dietary changes can help menopausal women manage

their weight. Dr. Cederquist recommends a diet in which women monitor the amount and timing of carbohydrates. “A woman who could previously eat a breakfast of cereal and fruit when she was insulin sensitive will find she rapidly gains weight with the same meal if she is insulin resistant.” Women also need to consume adequate lean protein, though Dr. Cederquist emphasizes that they might consider the Bistro M.D. diet plan. “Women who work with me learn that adequate protein is not excessive protein, and that all protein does not have to be sourced from meat.” Tips to Plan a Fun Family Reunion (NewsUSA) - As extended families spread out throughout the country, it becomes more difficult to get everyone

together. Holding a family reunion, then, gives everyone a chance to meet, catch-up and learn a little more about their family history. But arranging a reunion can be a massive undertaking, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. However, with a little planning, anyone can pull off a successful family reunion. Follow these tips to ensure a fun, rewarding family reunion experience: * Create a family reunion committee. You will need at least two people to plan location, food, activities, budget, mailings, payments and record-keeping. The better organized your committee, the more smoothly your reunion will run. You can never start planning too early -; you will need to start at least a year ahead of time * Pick a theme. Designing your reunion

around a theme can make planning activities, food and decorations more creative. Family history themes, such a celebrating an anniversary, a birthday or a cultural heritage -; a Mexican fiesta, for example -; are always popular. * Develop a budget. Your budget will influence the rest of your decisions regarding housing, food and activities. When in doubt, plan for affordability -; as much fun as a Caribbean cruise might be, it’s unlikely that every family member can afford to attend. * Plan housing. If possible, choose a location that offers a range of lodging choices. National parks, for example, often have hotels nearby and may have cabins or tentcamping available, giving your guests plenty of options. * Keep the kids entertained. Don’t presume that the

grandparents or teenagers will act as babysitters for the whole reunion. Ask for volunteers, and rotate babysitting duties. Arranging competitions, like three-legged and costume races, will keep kids happy. You can even present the winner with a trophy -; Plaquemaker Plus (www. plaquemakerplus.com) offers a variety of trophies, including “Trophy Dudes” with bendable arms and legs. * Create activities. Adults might be content to sit around and chatter, but integrating the whole family can be a challenge. Try giving each family member a family tree to fill out, or arrange a friendly game of family trivia. And don’t forget to take a family photo. Plaquemaker Plus can even create heirloom-quality wooden plaques or acrylic images, so you can offer a unique souvenir to any family member who wants one.
