Acoustic Isolation : The Concept

MASS SPRING MASS
Mass To isolate: High density board gypsum or cement or
gypsum and cement in combination

Spring To absorb energy / dampening effect: Low density, resilient

wall : How Glass wool helps -

TWIGA

The resonance frequency at which maximum

transmission occur shifts to improve dB loss.
Absorptive Glass wool (e.g =0.91) creates
enough friction, so that it helps to convert sound
to heat energy and reduces transmission.
Lateral standing sound waves is also reduced
due to the same reason as above.

Density as a non critical factor: European study TWIGA

(Acoustic Working Group- Saint Gobain)
Air flow resistivity (r) linked with density of insulation has a
positive impact on sound isolation, but if it is more than r =
5 K.Pa.s/sq.m, with higher density it produce negative
results.

Mineral Wool !! What it is -

TWIGA

Mineral Wool (IS 8183) : Def- Mineral wool made from rock, slag or glass
processed from molten state into fiber form

Glass wool

Rock Wool/Slag wool

(IS 8183 Gr-1): Density12 50 Kg/cu.m

(IS 8183 Gr-2,3,4) Density: 51160

Slag wool ( with high slag

content from steel
industry)- Available in India

Pure Rock based stone wool

is not available in India

Due to lack of awareness Mineral wool in India is perceived only as Slag wool
irrespective of brand or technical specification. So in tender specifically Glass wool
should be mentioned to avoid any other type of Mineral wool. Whenever Mineral wool
wool is mentioned contractors go for slag based cheap products only to reduce cost
and hence dilute the specification.

STC

Glass wool being high absorptive,

soft and resilient material have
better sound isolation.
Example Glass Wool-20Kg/cu.m-50 mm
with both side 12 mm gypsum
boards Or. 8 mm Cement board :
STC: 49 - 50

Rock wool being less absorptive

and having short, rough, and
brittle fibers dont have efficient
sound isolation at densities less
than 60.
ExampleRock wool* -60 Kg/cu.m 50 mm
thickness with both side 12 to
18 mm thick Gypsum board
STC: 50 (Ref: PROMAT- high
standard european stone wool),
Indian make rock/slag wool
cannot match this performance).

For similar STC value Glass wool requires only 1/3rd of the density of Rockwool.

Glass Wool (GW)

Performance
under Vibration /
Jolting

No settlement of fibers, the

resilient fibers acts as springs
to absorb the vibration. Popular
use- Bus, Trains, metro rail
coaches.

RW fibers settles in when applied

vertical cavity. The unfiberised
part plays as sand paper and
make dust out of the fiber

Corrosion

No slag, sulphur, cloride. Pure

inorganic Glass fibers. Dont
have any corrosive element

20-30% slag with impurities like

sulphur, cloride makes the
product corrosive in nature

Reusability

High reusability as the product

have long and efficient Life
cycle.

Usability ends fast with physical

deterioration.

Moisture
management

Hydrophobic. Vapour barrier like

Aluminum based FSK,
Polypropylene based WMPVR,
WMP-10, Ultimate White,
Aluglass etc are applied

Mainly wrapped in Plastic bags.

Limited use of Aluglass and FSK.

Roll length max. 7.5m, only

available in panel form

Facing Tabs

50 mm facing extension on single or bothside of

the blanket or 100 mm tab on single side to
staple over the purlin (PEB application)

Normally used with

combustible polythylene.
Rarely FSK is used. Need
highstrength covering to
reduce sagging effect.

Bending
around the
corners

Easy to bend and wrap as GW is flexible.

Non flexible cannot be bend

efficiently without damaging
the materials at corner

Weight

As low as 0.6 Kg/sq.m with 12 Kg/cu.m density

products.

Heavy weight at least 2.4

Kg/sq.m. (4 X higher than
GW)

Cutting and
joining

Easy to cut with knife and compatible with

various adhesives, self adhesive aluminum
tapes, and industrial staple pins, polyamide
fasteners etc.

Brittle fibers create more

wastage and dust during
cutting. Never applied with
adhesive.
