INTRODUCTION

Springfield Farm is situated approximately 3.5 miles south east of

Haywards Heath.
RECONNAISSANCE
Firstly a walk was taken to establish the position for setting up survey
stations to carry out the traverse on site making sure that they were away
of any ground movement caused by earthworks, as some construction
works were taken near this place.
TRAVERSE
It was decided to use a 5 second instrument, a GeoMax Zoom 80. Before I
started the traverse work, a calibration check was carried out on the
instrument.
Tribrachs with optical plummets were checked too and adjusted to make
sure the accuracy of observations.
Meteorological reading were checked on the website
www.bbc.co.uk/weather and entered into the instrument at the initial
setup stage.
The station was orientated from Stn1 to Stn4 (backsight) and the angle
was set at 00-00-00, then the instrument turned to Stn2 (foresight). After
that, the face right was read, orientating the instrument first to Stn2 back
again, but transiting 180 degrees horizontal and vertical, then the station
was orientated to Stn4 with the same position as the last reading. Then
another round of angles was observed, orientating first to Stn2 and setting
the angle at 00-00-00, after that the instrument turned to Stn4. After that,
the face right was read, orientating the instrument firstly to Stn4
(transiting 180 degrees horizontal and vertical) and then to Stn2.
The same process was done from the different Stations orientating first to
the backsight and then to the foresight.
LEVELLING
A Leica NA720 optical level was used and a Leica fibre glass staff was
used.
Before I started any levelling a two peg test was carried out and the level
was well calibrated. The staff bubble was checked too prior to levelling to
be able to maintain the verticality of the staff at all times.

A level run was carried out between Stn1 and Stn4, and the level of Stn1
was held fixed.

EQUIPMENT LIST
-

GeoMax Zoom 80. Robotic total station.

3 tripods and tribrachs with optical plummets.
Leica NA 720 optical level and fibreglass staff.
4 pegs and 4 magnetic nails.
Hammer.

CONCLUSIONS
The misclosure on the traversing was small with a 3mm difference in
Eastings and 0mm difference in Northings which resulted in an accuracy
figure of 1:56,245 which is well.
The trig heighted levels agreed with the spirit levelling run with a
difference of 4mm on Stn1, 1mm on Stn2, 2mm on Stn3 and 2mm on
Stn4, which is well within accepted tolerances.
The misclose reflects the equipment and practices used; a 5 second total
station checked and calibrated, atmospheric corrections applied to
distances along with checked and adjusted optical plummets.
Two rounds of angles were read to improve the quality of observations and
to check for any gross errors.
The level was calibrated prior to use to ensure accuracy of readings, and
the level run agreed very well with the trig Heighting.
