Cut out some paper or foam flowers and leaves and string
them together into a colorful hula lei.
Safety Tips
Materials
Drinking straws
Scissors
Hole punch
Steps
1. Hula leis can be worn as necklaces, headpieces, bracelets or anklets.
Decide which ones you want to make and cut the appropriate length of
string. Make a knot on one end of your string.
2. Draw and cut flower shapes from colored paper or craft foam. We also
have flower lei templates that you can print and cut out.
For a bracelet or anklet, you will need about 6 to 8 flowers; for a
necklace or headpiece, you will need around 16 to 20 flowers.
3. Draw and cut out leaf shapes from green paper or craft foam. The
leaves should be slightly larger than the flowers. Make the same
number of pieces as the flowers.
4. Punch a hole through the center of each flower and leaf. Make sure
that the hole is big enough for the string to get through.
5. Cut drinking straws into 1-inch long pieces. You'll need approximately
the same number as the flowers.
6. String the pieces together in this order: straw, flower and leaf.
7. When you've strung enough pieces, make a knot right after the last
piece.
8. If you're using an elastic string you can tie both ends of the string
together to complete the lei.
9. If you're using ordinary string, knot both ends as you wear the lei.

Steps
1. Prepare 3 to 4 paper squares of the same size. You can use
square origami paper or follow these easy steps for making a
square from any rectangular piece of paper. Gift wrap paper,
magazine pages, and colorful brochures are some examples
of interesting paper options. Try to avoid using cardstock or
paper that is too thick or heavy to fold.
2. To ensure that all the paper squares will have the same fold
width, gather the sheets together, aligning them on all four
sides. While keeping the squares stacked together, make a
to inch wide fold on one side.
To make sure that all flower sections have the same petal
shape, place the trimmed section over an untrimmed one,
aligning them along the edges. Trace the shape of the tops of
the trimmed section onto the section below it. Cut along the
line.
10. Glue the third section over the second one, again aligning
along the edges. Glue the fourth section on top of the third
one. Press on the entire pile to glue all the sections in place.
Allow the glue to set for a few minutes before proceeding
with the next step.
11. Apply glue onto the pile's topmost fold and along the base of
the flower sections.
12. Carefully bring the two outermost folds towards each other to
open up the flower. Press on these pair of folds to glue them
together.
13. Gently press the sections towards the center to glue their
bases together.
More Ideas
Use two paper squares.
Instead of the recommended 34 paper squares, try using 2
squares to come up with a
flower with less petals. The
folds are more stretched open,
emphasizing the individual
petal shapes.

Steps
1. For this necklace, we need 2 sizes of paper or craft foam stars. You
may use pre-cut craft foam stars or cut out your own paper/craft foam
stars.
For this tutorial we are going to make our own paper stars and we will
show you how to make multiple stars all at once using a star pattern.
First, print out the Fold & Cut Stars (1- and 2-inch Stars) on
different colors of cardstock.
*If you're using pre-cut stars, jump to Step 10.
2. I've printed out mine on red, blue and white card stock to make a 4th
of July necklace but you can always print out yours in other colors
and in as many colors as you like.
3. You will notice that the print-out has 4 columns of stars (2 large ones
and 2 smaller ones). Cut out each of the columns.
4. Take one of the columns and fold it along the horizontal line at the
bottom of the star.
6. The result should be something like this. The star should be on the top
fold.
7. While keeping the paper folded, cut out along the outline of the star.
8. Each column yields 5 for the big stars and 7 for the smaller stars.
9. Fold and cut out the rest of the print-outs to come up with multicolored stars.
13. First, string a drinking straw. Next, a star, stringing through one hole
and going out the other hole.
14. String the drinking straws and stars alternately until you have covered
the entire length of the string.
*A 30-inch long string will need about 15 stars and 15 drinking straw
pieces.
15. Tie the ends of the string together, right below the button. Trim off the
excess length of string.
16. Position the stars so that all of them are in front while the drinking
straws are at the back.
18. Once the glue dries, you may try on your starry necklace!
More Ideas
Instead of stringing stars all along the length of the string, you can opt to string
stars only at the front part of the necklace. To achieve this, first string 6 drinking
straw pieces, then alternate 6 big stars with 6 drinking straws. After which, string
another 6 drinking straw pieces before joining the ends of the string together.
*I used pre-cut craft foam stars for this particular necklace.
I added a smaller third star at the center of each of these paper stars. I used a star
craft punch to make the tiny stars (you can also use star sequins or rhinestones) for
this 4th of July necklace.

Steps
1. To make the flowers, choose from any of these options:
Print out any of these flower sets or these flower shape sets.
Color and cut out the flowers.
Fold and cut your own paper flowers following our instructions
for making folding paper flowers or accordion flowers.
4. Leave at least a half-inch margin at the end of the paper strip. Apply glue
on this end.
5. Glue this end at the back of the other end of the strip to form a circular
crown. Once the glue dries, you can try on your flower crown.
More Ideas
Using different kinds of flowers makes a very interesting crown. You also
don't necessarily need to position the flowers in a straight arrangement; you
can place some slightly higher or lower along the strip. Overlapping flowers
can also make your crown look lusher.

cut.
3. Fold the resulting triangle along the middle to come up with a smaller
triangle.
4. Fold the resulting triangle again in the middle to come up with an even
smaller triangle.
5. Rotate the triangle so that its longest side is positioned vertically and its
solid corner (the corner corresponding to the paper's center) is at the bottom.
Bring the short side closest to the bottom towards the triangle's long side.
7. Draw half-a-petal starting from the top corner of the triangle's vertical side
and ending about a half-inch from the bottom of the triangle's long side. Cut
along the outline.
8. Gently open up the paper to reveal an eight-petaled flower. Cut out a circle
from paper, felt, craft foam, or fabric. Glue it a the center of the flower.
Check out craft instructions for making:
More Ideas
Create a variety of flowers by using different colors and patterns of paper.
Also try varying the size and shape of the petal you draw in Step 7 to
come up with unique flowers.
Create a set of leaves by cutting green paper into a slightly larger 8petaled flower. Glue this under one or more layers of 8-petaled flowers.
Paper flowers are great for decorating a room for spring. Glue them
together into a garland or stick them around window sills, walls, or
bulletin boards.
Make stemmed flowers by gluing the flowers onto dowels, craft sticks, or
even pencils. Arrange them in a tall cup or vase.
You can also glue on buttons at the center of each flower for added
texture.

Invert the triangle so that the solid corner (the corner corresponding
4. to the paper's center) is at the bottom. Divide the triangle into 3 equal
sections, each with a 30 degree angle. The most accurate way to do
this is to use a protractor. If you don't have a protractor, you can
estimate the size of the sections as you do Steps 5 and 6.
5. Once you've marked out the three equal sections, fold the left section
towards the front.
7. Flip the entire shape over so that the side with the horizontal edge is
facing up. Cut along the horizontal edge so that you come up with a
wedge.
9. Unfold the paper to reveal a 6-petal flower. Cut out a circle from
paper, craft, foam, felt, or fabric. Glue it at the center of the flower.

Felt Wand
Delight your toddler by making this precious felt fairy
wand. Older kids can also make it as a first sewing project.

Felt
Wooden dowel

Scissors
Steps
1. Choose your wand's main shape from any of the printables below.
Print out the template on Letter or A4 size paper:
Heart - Set 1
Strawberry - Set 1
2. Cut out the paper shapes and trace around them on felt.
3. Cut out the felt shapes. You may notice that some patterns (e.g.
flower, heart, star) include smaller shapes that you can optionally
place at the center of the main shape. The strawberry pattern
includes a pair of leaf crown shapes that you can position on top of
the strawberries.
Put the two felt shapes back-to-back and aligned along the edges.
6. Stitch the two together along the edges, leaving a 1.5 to 2-inch
opening at the bottom of the shapes. This opening is for the dowel
and the cotton stuffing.
8. Apply hot glue gun adhesive or tacky glue on one end of the dowel.
Insert this end inside the opening of the felt shape and press it
against the felt to glue it in place.
9. Once the glue has set, stuff cotton, polyester or small scraps of felt
inside the wand shape. You may add a small bell or two for a fun
rattling sound.
Sew the opening shut to complete your felt wand. This cute wand
10. can be used as a rattle, an exciting pointer (to spice up a child's first
learning activities) or worn as part of a charming fairy costume.
More Ideas
If you wish to minimize or refrain from sewing, you can replace some or all
of the sewing steps with hot glue gun. This strawberry wand made use of
both sewing and hot glue. All the details were attached using hot glue gun
except for the edges, which were hand-sewn.
An important thing to note is that using hot glue gun is a lot quicker but it
doesn't bond as strongly as good stitching does. If you plan to make a wand
for kids below the age of three, it is strongly recommended that you sew the
parts instead of gluing them on. Small objects coming off such as beads or
buttons can be a choking hazard.
To make additional details that protrude out of your wand's main shape such
as this butterfly's felt antennae, you can glue or sew the detail onto one main
felt shape before proceeding with Step 6.

Steps
1. To make a pair of identical hearts, fold an A4 size, US Letter, or any
rectangular paper in half.
*Instead of doing Steps 1 to 5, you can also print out two copies of the
large heart (Set 4) from these heart templates. Cut out each heart.
7.
8. Cut a long length of ribbon or string. Start lacing on the hole closest
to the heart's top center. Lace the ribbon over and under the holes.
10. Write a Valentine note and fold the paper into a size that fits inside the
heart. Place the note in between the pair of hearts.
12. Tie the excess length of ribbon into a bow. Decorate, draw, or write a
short Valentine greeting on the front of your heart envelope. You can
even glue on a photo at the center.
Your folded Valentine note is safely tucked inside your beautiful heart
envelope. Whoever opens it will have to carefully unlace the ribbon to
read the message inside.
More Ideas
You won't need any decorations if you use patterned card stock to make
the hearts. Choose a colored string or ribbon that matches or contrasts
with the paper.

Steps
1. There are two options to make this greeting card. The first is using
our heart greeting card template. Print it out on A4 or Letter size
cardstock. Cut the template along the solid lines and fold along the
dashed lines. Go to Step 6 for decorating ideas.
The second option is to make the greeting card from scratch. Start out
with any rectangular piece of cardstock or construction paper. Position it
horizontally on a flat surface. Mark the middle of the paper with a light
pencil mark.
3. Similarly fold the left edge towards the middle. Your greeting card now
has a pair of front flaps that can be opened and closed.
4. Draw a heart starting from the middle and extending on both flaps. To
ensure that the front and back of your greeting card are connected, the
corners of the heart should go over the edges of the paper.
5. While keeping the paper folded, cut out the greeting card along the heart
outline.
7. Write a greeting inside the card. If the paper is too dark to write on, you
can cut a smaller heart from any light-colored paper and write your
greeting on it. Glue this at the center of your greeting card.
8. With a sticker or a short piece of tape to seal the front, your greeting card
is all set to be delivered!
More Ideas
Adding a ribbon can add charm and at the same time seal the front of your
greeting card. Punch a hole close to the straight edge of each flap. Weave a
ribbon through both holes and tie it into a bow to keep the greeting card
closed.
If you use patterned paper or cardstock, you won't need to decorate the front
of your card. This is a great idea if you need to make several greeting cards.
You can decorate the front with a smaller heart to create a framed heart
look. Aside from regular paper, you can cut out the heart out of felt, fabric,
giftwrap paper, or textured paper. I used coffee filter paper colored with
food coloring to create a cool tie-dyed effect. See details on this technique
at our Coffee Filter Flowers craft.
Regardless of what material you choose, remember to cut the middle of the
heart before gluing it onto the front of your greeting card.
