DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP STYLES


Leadership is the process where a person exerts influence over others and inspires, motivates and directs their
activities to achieve goals.
Leader is the person exerting the influence.
Sources of Power
Used to affect others behavior and get them to act in given ways.
a. Legitimate Power: managers authority resulting by their management position in the firm.
Ex. Power to hire/fire workers, and assign work.
b. Reward Power: based on the managers ability to give or withhold rewards.
Ex. Pay raises, bonuses, verbal praise.
c. Coercive Power: based in ability to punish others. Ranges from verbal reprimand to pay cuts to firing.
d. Expert Power: based on special skills of leader. Often found in technical ability.
e. Referent Power: results from personal characteristics of the leader which earn workers respect, loyalty
and admiration. Usually held by likable managers who are concerned about their workers.
Personal Leadership Style are the ways leaders choose to influence others.

Managers retain power.


You must do as they say.
They believe they know best.
They make it clear to staff /workers exactly what needs to be done, when and how it should be done.
Motivation provided through structured rewards and punishments
They do not give workers chance to make suggestions.

A. Manager manages by the book.
B. Everything must be done according to procedure or policy.
C. If it isnt covered by the book, the manager refers to the next level above.

Keeps employees informed
Shares decision making and problem solving responsibilities
Gathers information from staff members before making decisions
Help employees evaluate their own performance
Allows employees to establish goals

Recognizes and encourages achievement
Can produce high quality and high quantity work for long periods of time

A. Power from a persons authority to punish
B. Most obvious types of power a leader has.
C. Good leaders use coercive power only as a last resort.

Motivate followers by appealing to their own self-interest


Motivate by the exchange process.
Focuses on the accomplishment of tasks & good worker relationships in exchange for desirable rewards.
Encourage leader to adapt their style and behavior to meet expectations of followers

Inspire followers to transcend their self-interest for the organization

Stimulates followers intellectually, arousing them to develop new ways to think about problems.
Uses contingent rewards to positively reinforce desirable performances
Flexible and innovative.

Little or no direction
Gives followers as much freedom as possible
All authority or power is given to the followers
Followers must determine goals, make decisions, and resolve problems on their own.
