ABSTRACT

Because of the growing number of aging people many are in search for a home where
they can stay as they recover from their hospitalization with help of professional nurses
outside the hospital or those elderly people who are in search for a place where
someone can take care of them, a nursing home shall be built in the municipality of
Lucban, Quezon province. It will be housing up to 35 aging people as well as the staff
that will be taking charge in their recovery. The requirements present shall help to
beneficiaries uplift their health as well as enjoy their time inside the structure thinking
that they are still on their own homes,

II.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

To be able to create a structure whose form shall follow its own function as well as to
create a sustainable and energy efficient building that can create a home feeling for the
individuals who are suffering from deteriorating health.

III.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Lucban as a cultural and historical resort town was founded in
1578 by the early Franciscan missionaries led by Fr. JUAN DE
PLASENCIA. It became a regular town in 1995 and was the scene
of an early revolt staged by the Cofradia de San Jose, a religious
confraternity founded by a native of Lucban, Tayabas,
APOLINARIO DELA CRUZ, known as Hermano Puli.
Situated at 1,400 ft. above sea level, Lucban lies on a slope
northeast of majestic 7,380 ft Mt. Banahaw, a mystical mountain.
Mt. Banahaw was once an active volcano and its last recorded
eruption was in 1721. This eruption caused a lake to form in the
volcanos crater but in 1743, probably because of another

eruption, the crate broke open causing a flood and throwing

boulders. The crater today is called ILALIM
Lucban is coldest from November to February with temperature
range from 55 to 77 F. One can Feel the gentle, cool breeze even
during the summer months of April and May, making it the ideal
Summer Capital of Quezon Province

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION:
Lucban, subtly nestled at the foot of majestic Mt. Banahaw De
Lucban, which towers 1,875 meters, is about 26 kilometers from
Lucena City, the provincial capital. It is located at the
Northwestern border of Quezon province with geographical
coordinates if 121 degrees, 33 minutes east longitude and 14
degrees, 7 minutes latitude. Lying on a slope at the northeast of
Mt. Banahaw, it stands at an elevation of 1,500 feet above sea
level.
It is bounded on the north of Luisiana, Laguna; on the west by

GEOGRAPHY:
In terms of land area, Quezon is one of the biggest provinces in
the Southern Tagalog region. It spreads over 870,660 hectares
along the stretch of the Japan-Philippine Highway, which links
Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao. Its boundaries extend as far as
the province of Aurora in the north and Camarines Sur in the
south. It is bounded on the west by the provinces of Aurora,
Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Batangas and on the
southeast by Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur.
CLIMATE:
The province enjoys mild tropical climate and has two
pronounced seasons, the dry-cold and dry-warm climate and the
cold moist and cold dry climate. The lack of higher mountainous
barriers makes some coastal areas prone to the effects of tropical
depressions.

POPULATION:
The province of Quezon has an estimated population of
1,679,030 as of May 2000, mostly concentrated in the flat-south

central portion, which includes Lucena, Sariaya, and Candelaria.

The people are characterized as friendly and hardworking.

INDUSTRIES:
The peoples main sources of livelihood range from land and sea
agricultural cultivation to home industries which have lately
taken a turn toward the export-oriented light to heavy industries,
with the planning and construction of economic zones.

POLITICAL SUBDIVISION:
The province is composed of 41 towns and one highly urbanized
city, which is Lucena City. The province has 1,248 barangays,
which include the barangay of Lucena City.

NURSING HOME:
A nursing home is a place for people who don't need to be in a
hospital but can't be cared for at home. Most nursing homes
have nursing aides and skilled nurses on hand 24 hours a day.
Some nursing homes are set up like a hospital. The staff provides
medical care, as well as physical, speech and occupational
therapy. There might be a nurses' station on each floor. Other
nursing homes try to be more like home. They try to have a
neighborhood feel. Often, they don't have a fixed day-to-day
schedule, and kitchens might be open to residents. Staff
members are encouraged to develop relationships with residents.
Some nursing homes have special care units for people with
serious memory problems such as Alzheimer's disease. Some will
let couples live together. Nursing homes are not only for the
elderly, but for anyone who requires 24-hour care.

NURSING HOME LIVING ARRANGEMENT

The ambience and layout varies from nursing home to nursing
home. For example, some rooms may be private and others
shared. Rooms may have their own bathroom, or bathrooms may
be shared in the hallway. Some meals may be provided in the
room, while others may be in a centralized dining area.

While nursing homes have traditionally been set up in a

medically oriented design, with ease of patient care being the
primary goal, some homes are now moving to a newer design
model with smaller communities of 10 to 30 people within a
home, private kitchens, communal areas, and continuity of staff.

SERVICES:
Nursing homes offer the most extensive care a person can get
outside a hospital. Nursing homes offer help with custodial care
like bathing, getting dressed, and eatingas well as skilled care
given by a registered nurse and includes medical monitoring and
treatments. Skilled care also includes services provided by
specially trained professionals, such as physical, occupational,
and respiratory therapists.

The services nursing homes offer vary from facility to facility.

Services can include:

Room and board

Monitoring of medication
Personal care (including dressing, bathing, and toilet
assistance)
24-hour emergency care
Social and recreational activities

Occupational Therapy
Some individuals that are housed in a nursing home require
ongoing occupational therapy. Occupational Therapists "promote
the health and participation of people, organizations, and
populations through engagement in occupation. These
specialists provide intervention in areas of occupation such as:
activities of daily living (such as bathing, dressing, grooming;
instrumental activities of daily living (home and financial
management, rest and sleep, education, work, play, leisure) and
social participation.

They also develop and implement health and wellness programs

to prevent injuries, maintain function, and improve safety of

residents. For example, Occupational Therapists can take a

leadership role in developing and implementing programs to
educate clients on compensatory techniques for low vision,
customized exercise programs, or strategies to prevent falls.
Occupational therapy practitioners may also consult with other
staff within the facility or in the community on a variety of topics
related to increasing safe engagement in activities. Occupational
therapy practitioners can provide a variety of services to shortand long-term residents of a SNF. Based on a client-centered
evaluation, the occupational therapist, the client, caregivers,
and/or significant others develop collaborative goals to identify
strengths and deficits and address barriers that hinder
occupational performance in multiple areas. The intervention
plan is designed to promote a clients optimal function for
transition to home, another facility, or long-term care.
Physical therapy
Some of the individuals that are housed in a nursing home need
ongoing physical therapy. This can be for any number of reasons.
Perhaps a person has motor skills that never fully developed or
have stopped functioning for some reason. Perhaps an individual
has undergone a surgery or medical procedure that requires
some manner of physical restitution on a personal level. Nursing
homes offer specialists that are well versed in the field of
rebuilding muscle or helping one regain their confidence when it
comes to doing something physical. This is one of the most
common therapies that are done in these nursing homes.

Medical needs
Nearly all residents in a nursing home have some type of medical
need, ranging from basic care requirements to more specialized
needs. Most nursing facilities are equipped to deal with most
general medical needs likely to emerge. Most of the staff will
have ample training in how to deal with patients with specific
needs.

In fact, the staff that interact daily with the patients are normally
registered nurses, who have spent years training for all
contingent situations that they may encounter in a nursing
home.

Regulations and oversight

In most countries, there is a degree of government oversight and
regulation over the nursing home industry. These regulatory
bodies are usually tasked with ensuring patient safety for the
residents and improving the standard of care. In the U.S. Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services ensures that every Medicare
and Medicaid beneficiary receives seamless, high-quality health
care, both within health care settings such as nursing homes,
and among health care settings during care transitions.

To ensure that nursing homes meet the necessary legal

standards, the authorities conduct inspections of all nursing
home facilities. This process plays a critical role in ensuring basic
levels of quality and safety by monitoring nursing home
compliance with the national legal requirements. Surveyors will
conduct on-site surveys of certified nursing homes on average
every 12 months to assure basic levels of quality and safety for
beneficiaries. The authority might also undertake various
initiatives to improve the effectiveness of the annual nursing
home surveys, as well as to improve the investigations prompted
by complaints from consumers or family members about nursing
homes.

IV.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

As the population ages, many people are faced with the prospect of moving
themselves or family member to a nursing home to be able to be taken care
more. It may be a decision caused by suddenly following hospitalization or
gradually as needs become more difficult to meet in other types of housing.
Because of this circumstances a private institution wanted to create a home
that can house those with the need of medical care outside the hospital and
to those older generation that needed a home to feel relaxed, comfortable
and at ease with the help of the nurses and to be able to communicate with
the people with the same generation as them.
This nursing home shall be built in the Municipality of Lucban, Quezon
province. It shall be erected in a parcel of land with an area of 1928 sq.m flat
land. A national road with the width of 20 m is situated at the NE area of the
land.

The nursing home shall conform in the latest design and technology of
building construction and design and it shall be sustainable and energy
saving for the owners to save maintenance cost of the building. The nursing
home shall be housing 25-35 people and shall have 10-20 staffs. Also there
should be a location for the admission area of the patients and consultation`
area for them. The nursing home shall have the following spaces:
a. Single person room
b. 2-person room
c. Ward room
d. Staff room
e. Nurse room
f. Security room
g. Utility staff room
h. Clinic
i. Kitchen
j. Pantry
k. Supply room
l. Utility room
m. Laundry area
n. Common dining area
o. Multi-purpose hall
p. Indoor garden
q. Outdoor garden
r. Clinic
s. Chapel
t. Development room

Additional spaces can be added if necessary

The nursing home shall have a nurses area in every floor and cooked food
can possibly be served on rooms for the patients. Every floor shall have their
own toilet and bath, these bath shall enable wheel chair users to take bath
with ease. Elevators and stairs shall be provided as well as ramps if possible
as the means of transportation in every floor. The nursing home shall bring
relaxation and ease to every individual occupying so if possible create areas
where they can unwind and relax for them serves and areas which they can
have conversation with other patients.

V.

OBJECTIVE

The project aims to provide a care home for the old aged people who are
recovering from hospitalization and for those who are having difficulties in
moving in their own space. The nursing home shall create a positive
community that can uplift and prolonged the old peoples health but also
shall encourage friendship and camaraderie with the other patients inside
the institution. The building shall enable the inhabitants to recover from their
deteriorating health and as well as relaxed and unwind just like they are at
their own homes.

VI.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

Home healthcare is fast becoming an established and preferred solution

increasingly accepted in most countries especially those with a growing
elderly population. Given the choice, most seniors prefer to live out their
twilight years for as long as they can in the comfort and familiarity of their
own homes. They would opt any time to live in their own homes with home
care assistance in preference to an assisted living facility which comes with
its own set of challenges.
Today with homecare being available a senior no longer has to move to a
nursing home when some facets of independent living becomes beyond
them. For the elderly and seniors who prefer to remain in their own homes,
home care becomes a critical option. There are different types of home care
assistance available which cover a range of services from medication
management, nursing care to basic assistance with daily living.
While in many families caregivers come from within the family, this might not
always be a practical solution. Caregiving is a stressful exercise often beyond
the capacity of a family member. Certain types of caregiving might also
require specialized training. Because of the unexpected increase in the
elderly population, millions of adults now find themselves in a position where
they are forced to care for parents and older relatives. This presents a
challenge because it is often a difficult choice to strike a balance between
caring for an older loved one and taking care of ones own needs. This
situation has created a mounting need for specialized home care services
which include specialized nurses.
For those residents that need help with daily tasks, nursing homes are great
for this because they help immensely. These daily tasks include bathing,

dressing, eating, drinking, running errands, and much more. With old age,
daily tasks can become much more difficult. Many seniors lose their license
and need that extra care to get things taken care of.

Nursing homes have a built-in social network. They become friends

with their peers quickly. Many homes have organized events that
allow the elderly to get out and about as well as making new
friends. Depression can come along with old age, so it is important
to keep them happy and a way to do this is to make them feel at
home.

Nursing home staff will take care of laundry services and other
cleaning duties. When you become older, it is hard to keep up with
daily tasks like this. Having cleaning staff can be valuable and save
time and energy.

Nursing homes provide meals and snacks throughout the day. Many
homes can cater to different tastes and dietary requirements
requested. Some facilities have a dietician on staff that can consult
with you to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need and
making your diet healthy.

The best part of nursing homes is the skilled nursing facilities health
care services that are offered to residents. These services usually
include the administration of medication, emergency services, and
more. Senior safety depends on the health care providers and
nurses that are available to them.

If a senior has a serious health condition, nursing homes have

trained staff to attend to these seniors needs. The level of care is
above what a family member could provide. Many health conditions
that reside in seniors require serious attention.

When living in a nursing home, the elderly are protected from harm
that could come their way. This is especially important when you
have a patient with a serious disease like dementia. If they forgot to
lock their door, they would not be safe in their homes. Nursing
homes have a great level of security.

Living in a nursing home can give access to many resources that

the senior may need. The senior citizen will not have to worry about
learning how to use the internet or holding a phone, because the

staff will gladly help them with whatever needs they may have or
information they need to find out.

Most of the time, family becomes the caretaker for the elderly, but it
is hard to take care of them when you have a life or family to take
care of as well. Nursing homes are a great way to getting them the
care they deserve with round the clock service.

VII.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

CONCEPT:
The concept of the structure is a forest. I wanted to depict a scenery from
the forest and create it as pattern for the building faade. I chose this
concept because the site is located in the province where mountains and
natural resources are present. I wanted the nursing home to be one with
nature and also to make the ambiance of the building relaxing for the
patients. Also I wanted to relate the forest to the elderly present in the
building because just like a forest even if time passes by and many
calamities have passed this area they are still there even if damaged forest
remains intact and strong and beneficial to the environment and to the
people. Just like the individuals in the nursing home who are sick and
disabled but they are still kept strong inside the nursing home continuing to
heal themselves and be beneficial for the people when they have already
been nursed and taken care of.
I have created a skylight in the middle of the building and a garden indoor to
be able to decrease the use of electricity during the day as well as to give a
view of nature for those who cannot move out of their room and those who
cannot get out of their quarters. Also each floor I have created balconies with
resting areas for them to seat and communicate to other people. I have
created a common dining area to which can also be a muti purpose hall for
special programs that will be held inside the institution also this can serve as
the visitation area and visitors lounge for those people who wanted to see
their patients admitted in the home.
