Celebration
In Bhutia language Buddha Jayanti is called Saga Dawa. Buddha Purnima as per Hindu calendar marks this festival. Celebrated especially
by Mahayana Buddhists, it is the most revered festival in Sikkim. On this day, people gather in temples, light up butter lamps to pay
homage to Lord Buddha. Butter lamps are basically claried yak butter or vegetable oil in a dish with a wick. The ceremony consists of a
grand parade by Monks who moves carrying the holy book from Tsuklakhang Palace Monastery around Gangtok. Blowing of horns,
turning of prayer wheels by monks, burning of incense and beating of drums gives liveliness to the procession. The fest aims to pray for
the survival and dissemination of Buddhas teachings. People get themselves dressed in traditional attire and gather on the streets to
receive blessings by touching the Holy Scriptures carried by the monks.

By Air Bagdora, West Bengal, 124 Km away from Gangtok is the nearest airport. From airport one can taxi/private vehicle to reach
Gangtok. Helicopter service is also available operated by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation which takes 20 min to reach.
By Train New Jalpaiguri, 117 Km away from Gangtok is the closest railway station. It is well linked to all the major cities like Kolkata,
New Delhi. The town can be reached by hiring a taxi or state run buses available at Siliguri Bus Stand.
By Bus Gangtok is well connected by roadway to all the nearby major towns and cities including Siliguri (115 Km), Kolkata (670 Km),
Darjeeling (98 Km) and Kalimpong (74 Km). Private buses/taxis/jeeps (via NH 31) from Siliguri or Bagdora are good options to reach the
place.
