Exploring Incentives for New Owners – EPA Public Comment Period: Wednesday, June
20, 2007
On May 14, 2007, EPA issued a Federal Register Notice (“Enhancing Environmental Outcomes
from Audit Policy Disclosures through Tailored Incentives for New Owners”). EPA is seeking
comments by July 13, 2007, on whether and to what extent the Agency should consider offering
tailored incentives to encourage new owners of regulated entities to discover, disclose, correct
and prevent the recurrence of environmental violations. The Agency is considering whether
actively encouraging such disclosures has the potential to increase pollution reductions as a
result of Audit Policy disclosures. New owners may be particularly well-situated and highly
motivated to focus on and invest in, making a clean start for their new facilities by addressing
environmental compliance. Comments may be communicated at this public meeting or online:
EPA-HQ-OECA-2007-0291.
Location: Palace Hotel, 2 New Montgomery St. San Francisco
Time: 10:00AM to 4:00PM

Italia that reveal origins, connections, parallels, and inspiration for California farms and gardens.
Presented by John Valenzuela, horticulturist and Permaculture educator, we’ll start in the central
Hill towns of Umbria Tuscany, which has a rolling landscape similar to Sonoma and Napa.
There we’ll visit a spiritual community raising, preparing and serving a wide variety of crops.
Reminiscent of the Big Sur coast, the next stop is the north coast of Liguria, the region of the
Cinque Terre named after the five ancient fishing villages connected by foot paths that cling to
the base of massive cliffs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has an ocean preserve below, and
a national park above, with thousands of nearly vertical acres terraced into a stair step landscape
planted with tenacious olives, grapes, along with a variety of cultivated and wild fruits and nuts.
Along the Bay of Napoli, in Sorrento, the Pergola protected lemon groves are explored, with
views of Vesuvius and Capri Island. Then along the rugged Amalfi coast, the vertical seaside
village of Positano reveals its hidden gardens, looking like the model for Sausalito or Laguna
Beach. These areas show a diversity of unique and abundant local food landscapes, cultural
traditions, and religious heritage and provide many parallels for our own farms and gardens.

Greenpeace USA: Campaigns Assistant

31
Women’s Environmental Network
JUNE 2007 NEWSLETTER

Greenpeace proves every day that ordinary people can accomplish extraordinary things. It was a
group of thoughtful, committed citizens that came together in 1971 to create Greenpeace. A
handful of determined activists leased a small fishing vessel, called the Phyllis Cormack, and set
sail from Vancouver for Amchitka Island in Alaska. Their mission was to protest U.S. nuclear
testing off the coast of Alaska with a brave act of defiance: to place themselves in harm’s way.
Despite being intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard, these daring activists sailed into history by
bringing worldwide attention to the dangers of nuclear testing. That was more than 30 years ago,
and in that time, Greenpeace has indeed changed the world, and we continue to make the world a
better place. Our committed activists and supporters have come together to ban commercial
whaling, convince the world’s leaders to stop nuclear testing, protect Antarctica, and so much
more. Today, we have grown from a small group of dedicated activists to an international
organization with offices in more than 30 countries. But our spirit and our mission remain the
same. Our fight to save the planet has grown more serious – the threat of global warming,
destruction of ancient forests, deterioration of our oceans, and the threat of a nuclear disaster
loom large. Greenpeace is actively working to address these and other threats. The Campaigns
Assistant provides administrative support to the campaign department in all aspects of
management. The Campaigns Assistant will be expected to support several campaigns, as
needed. For more information and a detailed job description:
