PROPOSAL FOR CHEMISTRY PROJECT STPM 2016

NAMES (IC no.)
Theme

: Chemistry in daily life

Topic

: The corrosion of metals

Problem
statement

: What is the effect of pH level on corrosion rate?

Hypothesi
s

Aim

: To investigate the effect of pH level on corrosion rate

Variables

: Manipulated variable: The pH value of the solutions used

Responding variable: The corrosion rate for each of the metals
Constant variable: The volume of various type of solutions used

Method of
analysis

: pH

Theory

: The definition of rate of corrosion is the speed at which a metal deteriorates

in specific environment. The rate, or speed, is dependent upon environmental
conditions as well as the type, and condition, of the metal.

Time
required

: 30 minutes

Cost

: RM 20

Materials
and
Apparatus

Procedure

: 1. Label each 5 beakers with the following: A, B, C.

Silver, copper, aluminium, zinc, steel wires

Sandpaper
Scissors
Clamp
15 Beakers
500 cm3 of 0.001 mol dm3 Hydrochloric acid ( pH 3)
500 cm3 of 0.001 mol dm3 Potassium hydroxide solution ( pH 11)
Electronic balance
Distilled water ( pH 7) in wash bottle
Digital watch

2. Fill the beaker A, B and C with hydrochloric acid, distilled water and
potassium hydroxide solution respectively.
3. Cut the silver, copper, aluminium, zinc, and steel wires into small pieces
using a scissors and clean the metals by using sandpaper.
4. Weigh the initial mass of 5 type of metals by using electronic balance.
5. Put the 5 type of metals into beakers A and at the same time start the
digital watch.
6. After 30 minutes, take out all the metals from the beakers by using a
clamp and weigh the final mass of each metals by electronic balance.
7. Repeat step (4) and repeat the experiment by putting the 5 type of metals
into beakers B after taking its mass and at the same time start the digital
watch.
8. Repeat Step (6) after 30 minutes.
9. Repeat step (4) and repeat the experiment by putting the 5 type of metals
into beakers C after taking its mass and at the same time start the digital
watch.
10. Repeat Step (6) after 30 minutes.
11. Record the initial mass and final mass of each metals in a table for each
experiments and calculate the rate of corrosion.
