A weak solution of iodine was prepared by weighing iodine and potassium iodide and transferring them to a beaker with water. The mixture was stirred with a glass rod and alcohol was added to produce the required volume. The solution was filtered and the final volume was adjusted to 30ml with additional alcohol before dispensing in a labeled container for external use as an antiseptic. The solution contained 20mg of free iodine and 35mg of total iodine per ml.
