Vocabulary Scrivener

Lexis: is a more complete concept.


Vocabulary; refers to single words a n sometimes linked two or three word
combination.
Lexis: Refers to the internal database of words and the combinations that we
can recall.
This includes:

traditional single word

Common going together patterns of words (blonde hair,


traffic jam) known as collocations.
longer combinations of words (used as if they were a
single one) e.g: Id rather not to say, someone you can talk
to
Grammar: patterns of language and the ability to construct new combinations.
2.- Lexis in classroom
Beginners manage to communicate without the use of correct grammar, only
using key words.
Encourage students with use of English-English dictionaries, intead of the
English-Spanish(mother tong)*
The role of lexis in classroom
Lexis is important and needs a systematic and constant work to help the
students to learn, use and recall new words.
the use of dictionaries provides a useful tool for self study.
make a difference between the lexis for productive and receptive
recognition.
Deal with multiword items and not only single words.
3.- Lexis and skills works
Lexis is highly related with the reading and listening tasks. Because the
students meet the language in natural context.

Pre-teaching lexis
The use of activities designed to approach and practice some lexis before the
principal activities to do (read words related to a text or a listening.)
Dealing with lexis during and after a activity.
Give short answers and only to the ones who ask, this will encourage them to
search by themselves a meaning.
In listening try to keep the attention on the recording making questions
about small parts of it. Some details.

4.- Presenting lexis


Offer a short teacher led focus on the meaning to clarify a single item.
(maybe using a list)
words related to a specific place or words that have a similar use or the ones
that you can use to define a specific task.
5.- Lexical practice activities and games
To help the students to become more familiar with an specific lexical item is
necessary to keep them working with it with different activities as:
discussions, written tasks, matching pictures and words, memory
games, fill in gaps etc.
6.- Remembering lexical items
Encourage students to keel a useful lexical item list, not only to translate the
words that they are reading or listening.
This is necessary to approach them with the use of collocations.
