Which is Best CMTS or EOC?

Both of them are best, choices however depend on ones technical capability of
using the device and the budget allocated for the implementation of cable internet
service.
The CMTS
The CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) requires a well trained IT-personnel to
operate the device and a highly skilled engineer or technician capable of
maintaining the 2-way CATV distribution plant for a stable internet delivery.
The CMTS is set to a capacity ranging from 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 2000, therefore
the user should select a capacity base on the number of subscriber they would like
to serve.
Please dont get intimidated with the CMTS because it has a great advantage that
may suit to your network setup and future add-on services.
Ps. we will highlight the CMTS after we finished the discussion on the EOC. Watch
for it!
The EOC
The EOC (Ethernet Over Coax) on the other hand is a user friendly technology, no
special IT-skills required and the CATV distribution plant need minimal and simple
upgrading for the cable internet delivery. The heart of the EOC is the MASTER
module.
EOC DEPLOYMENT
Deployment of the EOC Master is fast and easy. However the delivery of internet to
the subscriber is per optical node area. One optical node shell could in-house 1, 2,
3, or 4 EOC Masters where each Master is capable of 64 internet subscribers. This
will guarantee of 64 to 256 subs capacity per node area.
The set-up of the EOC Master to the internet is straight forward. The Network
Management Software embedded to every Master is user friendly provided the user
knows how to use a computer and internet and have a basic knowledge of
networking.
LINK LOSS
The only thing one should observe is the Total DB Loss of the link between the EOC
Master and the modem. The link loss is due to the insertion loss of the Diplex Filters,
Cables, Taps, Splitters and Couplers inserted along the way up to the modems
location. If a modem is far from the EOC node, the diagnostic web page of the EOC
Master can be access to determine how much is the DB loss of the link. The
minimum is 10DB and the maximum is 60DB, higher than 55DB link loss will result
to intermittent connection or no connection at all between the Master and the
modem.
Extended LAN
In general the EOC system is like an extended LAN that spans several kilometers
away from a router. The Fiber optic and the coaxial cable serves as the link of the
subscribers computer to the router in order to access the internet.

FUNCTIONS
The cable modem used by the EOC acts like a media converter. It converts the RG-6
coaxial cable connection to rj-45 media connection to the subscribers CPE such as
computer, laptop or Wireless Router.
The EOC Master acts like a Bridge and media converter. It converters the rj-45
media connection to coaxial cable and also manage the activity of all the cable
modem attached to it.
The Fiber Optic Media Converter pre-installed in the EOC node shell or housing
converts Fiber optic to rj-45 media connection for EOC Masters LAN interface.
IP ADDRESS
The EOC Master does not provide an IP address to the modem because it does not
have a DHCP server. In fact the Master needs an IP address to work normally. The
Router with DHCP function is the one that provides IP addresses to the Master and
the subscribers computer or wireless router.
The cable modem used in the EOC does not require an IP address because it acts
only as media converter. However modems MAC address registration is important
to so that it can be supervised by the Master.
EOC-How to Setup and Operate
Shown below is the start-up check-list if you want to integrate a cable internet in
your system using the EOC.

7. Laptop for network configuration, monitoring and servicing
8. Two-way CATV Amplifier with built-in or pre-installed Diplex Filter
9. Jumper wire # 22 or# 24 (solid copper wire)
In the Full Coax Deployment the EOC Master is installed inside the Headend facility
of a cable TV network. While In the HFC Deployment the EOC Master is installed in
the Optical Node Receiver located in the area far from the Headend facility.

INTERNET CONNECTION
To start a cable internet service one must acquire an internet connection to a
reliable internet service provider (ISP). The acquired line-rates should be constant
and reliable in order to avoid slow browsing or loss of internet connection on the
part of the subscribers. In the year 2005 an E1 or 2.048Mbps line-rates is good for
60 to 80 internet users , nowadays however an E1 will be good only for 25 to 35
internet user due to the existence of a YouTube, Skype and YM with voice and video
streaming, and a Movie download applications that require a lot of bandwidth.
ROUTER WITH DHCP SERVER
The Router is your gateway to the internet and it is also used to allocate an IP
address to all the IP dependent devices in your system. Routers IP address
allocation is dynamic so that the router can reuse the address. Some devices
however requires a static or permanent IP address like the EOC Master, the router
default gateway, and the PC that is used to manage the EOC Masters.
A simple and low-cost router can manage to allocate 256 IP address to the network
while an Integrated Business router can provide more than 256 IP addresses using
multiple DHCP address pools.
THE EOC MASTER
The EOC master has two (2) LAN ports, one is used for the router or media
converter connection and the other one is used for direct connection to a laptop for
field configuration, monitoring and servicing.
An EOC Master diagnostic web page must be open to view and analyze its status
and activity and also the activity of the cable modem. On-line modem and their link
status can also be view in the web page.
Some parameters that require configuration inside the EOC Master are the
following.
a. Masters IP address
b. User Name and Password
c. Service Package List which include download/upload speed assignment per
package
d. Device List where you enter the Modems MAC address, and the acquired service
package.
EOC MODEM
The EOC modem has the following interfaces.
a. RF input a connection to the CATV distribution line
b. RF output a connection to your cable ready TV set
c. LAN 1 and LAN 2 ports a connection to your PC or Wireless Router
d. DC Power port a connection to AC/DC power pack of a modem
The EOC modem does not have a diagnostic web page but it has a front panel LED
that indicates Power, Link activity, and LAN port connection.
MEDIA CONVERTERS
The use of media converter is necessary to convert the rj-45 media connection to
fiber optic connection in order to transmit and receive data via HFC network. A

stand alone media converter is located at the Headend and it has a paired media
converter pre installed at the EOC Node.
The Media converter at the Headend has a transmit wavelength of 1550nm (nano
meter) and a receive wavelength of 1310nm. While the media converter at the EOC
node has the transmit wavelength of 1310nm and a receive wavelength of 1550nm.
The media converter uses only one (1) core fiber for the Transmit and Receive link
(Course Wave transmission). The other core is used for the delivery of CATV
channels to the optical node receiver.
LAPTOP
A laptop is used to manage the EOC Master in the field and also during installation
of the cable modem to the subscribers PC. Accessing the diagnostic web page of the
Master should not be done on the subscriber PC because of the danger of password
retention that might give the subscriber an unauthorized access.
TWO-WAY CATV AMPLIFIER
A two-way CATV amplifier must have a built-in or pre-installed Diplex Filter. The use
of diplex filter is to separate the CATV channels and the EOC signal when it enters
the amplifier for amplification purposes and combine them before it goes out of the
amplifier.
The CATV channels need amplification to recover losses due to coaxial cable
attenuation and passive insertion loss.
JUMPER WIRE #22, or #24
A jumper wire is installed to the return amplifier socket instead of a Hybrid amplifier
IC, the wire will serve as two-way channel to pass the downstream and upstream
data coming from the EOC master and the cable modem. The drawback however is
that cable loss and passive insertion loss is not recovered because EOC data signal
is not amplified. A careful planning and design of the outside plant should be
observed so that total link loss between the Master and the modem will not exceed
55DB.
Please post your comments and other inquiries about the EOC. Ill be very happy to
reply!
