Summar y
When in 1976 the new Serbian translation of Petronius Satyricon by Radmila
alabali (19272011) came to light, it marked a turning point in the practices of our
translators of classical authors. By taking an entirely new stylistic direction, basically
oriented to the works and authors of the satirical and realistic genres of classical literature,
Prof. alabali made a decisive impact on the younger generation of translators. The
distinctive feature of this new poetics is primarily associated with the entirely original
and innovative use of the Serbian language and its different literary and colloquial variants and local idioms as the most powerful stylistic device for conveying parodistic and
humorous potential of the original text. Regarding the narrative of the Latin prototype

as historically conditioned, deeply idiosyncratic and thus alienated from the contemporary
reader, i.e. incomprehensible in many ways (different civilization, different habits, different national and historical mentalities etc.), Radmila alabali succeeds in applying the
Serbian linguistic element of the translation as an effective means of text de-alienation,
thus bringing the reader closer to the realistic, satirical and parodistic aspects of the
meaning inherent in the original.

A FRAGMENT OF THE SERBIAN PROPHETOLOGION FROM
MOSCOW TEXTOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND EDITION

Summar y
The paper deals with an extract from the Serbian Prophetologion held by the State
Historical Museum in Moscow (GIM, Collection of P. I. Shchukin, No. 31) which, in the
authors opinion, dates from the second decade of the 14th century (in the literature, it
has been broadly dated into the 13th century). Accordingly, this manuscript is contemporary to the prophetologia of Deani and Crkolez. Having in mind that no more than
eight Serbian prophetologia, either complete or in fragments, have been preserved, and
that all of them date from the 13th14th centuries, this written monument is important for
the history of Serbian literacy. The fragment was first subject to codicological and palaeographic analysis; its structure was analyzed in detail; finally, a textological comparison with other Serbian and major Slavic prophetologia was performed. The comprehensive textological analysis has revealed the place of the Moscow Prophetologion among
other relevant sources which contain the section preserved in this book (the paroimia
between the Holy and Great Wednesday and the Holy and Great Friday from Exodus
2:1422, through the readings from the Book of Job, Prophecy of Jeremiah, Prophecy of
Isaiah, Prophecy of Zechariah, to Exodus 33:1113). Unfortunately, the prophetologia of
Belgrade and Crkolez are not among them. The paper highlights the similarities between
this source and the Serbian Prophetologion from Saint-Petersburg, as well as its analogies
with the Lobkov Prophetologion, which are not unexpected for a prophetologion of a
Serbian origin. The overall similarity of the Moscow, Lobkov and Zacharinski prophetologia and, to a lesser degree, the correspondence between the Moscow and Zacharinski prophetologia, as well as the fact that they directly draw on the Grigorovich Prophetologion, have also been mentioned. All these things show that the relations among the
manuscript groups that have already been identified cannot be reduced to a simple pattern.
The study further presents the integral text and the photos of all of the eighth pages of
the manuscript. We have also used this opportunity to give an outline of other Serbian
prophetologia through a textological analysis. Among other things, it is noteworthy that
the Moscow and Deani prophetologia, each in its specific way, abound in innovative
elements, compared to typical representatives of their manuscript groups. This indicates

the dispersion of a manuscript tradition. If the numerous lost links were preserved, we
would have a continuous series of manuscripts which would certainly engender a somewhat different idea of this type of books. The study is concluded by an illustration of the
situation in all of the analyzed examples based on a selected specimen a reading from
the Old Testament (Exodus 2:1422): the versions of this reading are parallelly given in
several columns to form an overview.

ON ARCHAISMS IN CONTEMPORARY SERBIAN DICTIONARIES

Summar y
The dictionaries of the contemporary standard Serbian language contain lexis which
is marked as archaic, obsolete, old standard, historical, Church Slavonic, etc. The task of
this paper is to establish what individual lexicographical editions classify under these
features, to what extent each of the dictionaries contains lexis thus marked, and how
justified that choice is.
The research has shown that our existing monolingual dictionaries seldom make a
clear distinction between what is no longer in use (e.g. orda sword, breg coast,
crnilo ink) and what has a narrow field of use, which is the characteristic of only some
fields of language or styles (e.g. celiv, celivati, i.e. celov, celovati, then pojac, hristoljubiv,
tihovati etc.). There is also no difference between the lexis which has the phonetic features
of Old Church Slavonic but is still part of the contemporary language (e.g. moti,
preosvetenost, Uspenije, bdenije, itije) and such lexis which is no longer in use (e.g.
besmrtije, nakazanije).
The newer lexicographical publications often take lexemes from older dictionaries
of the contemporary language although some of them (entirely or only in some meanings)
have in the meantime become obsolete (e.g. the meanings of lexemes samrtnik dying
man and smrtnik mortal have drifted apart, so the Church Slavonic word has been used
to mean the one who is dying, who is about to die, while the folk work has been used
to mean the one whose nature is to die, who can die).
The final conclusion is that marking archaic lexis of any kind (zast. obsolete, csl.
Church Slavonic, stknj. old standard etc.) is justified in the Dictionary of the Serbian
Academy of Sciences and Arts, which is the most detailed dictionary not just in terms
of the number of entries but with respect to other data, whereas the dictionaries that
cover a shorter period should not contain such obsolete lexis unless it is understood in the
normative sense as a feature of style. Lexicographers should also pay attention to those
items that are a characteristic only of some language fields or certain styles so that they
are not omitted from the dictionaries.

THE HERO AND THE SYZHET OF THE EPIC POEM
TYPOLOGIES AND INTERACTIONS

Summar y
This paper is a brief overview of a larger research the questions of the hero and the
syuzhet of epic poems. Firstly the syuzhet models are typologically divided into seven
types and several subtypes, groups, subgroups and clusters. Then we examine the syuzhets
structure and observe the tendencies of the complex syuzhets genesis, and trace the
interactions of individual syuzhets. The chapter dedicated to the hero presents relevant
criteria of the protagonist classification and an overview of different types of the champion, the autochthonous epic hero. The connections between the heroes of the epic poem
are established on the syntagmatic level (couples, triads and catalogues) and the paradigmatic axis (link between heroes from separate syuzhets). The final chapter connects two
viewpoints and establishes a link between the hero and the syuzhet. The structure and
composition of the epic syuzhet are expressed by the relations between characters. The
hero and the syuzhet are in constant interaction, modeling each other and mutually
adapting.

S u m m a r y
Stylization of verbal material was common practice during the XIX cent ury, and
it is clear that it was resorted to by the most important collectors of Serbian folktales of
this per iod Vuk Karadzi and Vuk Vrevi. Vrevis attit ude toward stylization of
humorous tales involves enter ing nonverbal elements, which is given special attention
in this paper, and cooperation that two Vuks have achieved in this area provides an op
port unity to compare the general characteristics of their understanding of folklore and
their attit udes towards stylization, which is here taken as phenomena between oral and
written model.

Z u s a m m e n f a s s u n g
In seiner Monographie ber Herder und dessen Ideen in sdslawischer Wiederge
burt im 19. Jah rhundert (Johann Gottfried Herderi njegove ideje u junoslavenskome
knjievnom i kulturno-politikom kontekstu 19. stolea: Johann Gottfried Herder und
seine Ideen im sdslawischen Literatur- und kulturpolitischen Kontext des 19. Jahrhun
derts) beabsichtigt Josip Babi, den Umfang aufzuzeigen, in welchem diese der Grndung
der nationalen sprachlichen, literarischen und kult urellen Identitt berhaupt, zuerst bei
den Deutschen und dann bei den Sdslawen, beiget ragen haben. Da die herder ischen
kult ur- und literat urtheoretischen und literat urgeschichtlichen Konzepte, sowohl in den
philologischen und philosophischen Disziplinen als auch in der allgemeinen Bildung
schon gleich nach dem Tod ihres Autors zum Allgemeing ut wurden, musste Babi sie in
ihrer zeitlichen Abfolge und ihrem geschichtlichen Kontext von Neuem beschreiben,
bestimmen und erlutern. Nur auf einer solchen Grundlage war es mglich, Herders
Leitgedanken in ihrer berwiegend anonymen nationalen Bildungsrezeption und in dem
gemeinsamen methodologischen Organon der humanistischen Wissenschaften zu erken
nen, ausz usondern und als herderisches Erbe erneut zu autorisieren.
Der erste Teil der Arbeit von Babi ist den bedeutendsten und epochemachenden
Werken Herders gewidmet, in denen er seine Hauptideen ausdrckte, auf die die moder
ne Philologie, die daraus hervorgehenden Geisteswissenschaften und die Stellungnahmen
des modernen nationalen Selbstbew usstseins groenteils gegrndet werden. Der zweite
Teil beschftigt sich mit der Aufnahme des Gedankeng uts bei den Deutschen und bei
den Sdslawen. Damit bekommt der Leser eine ganzheitliche geschichtliche Darstellung
der Entwicklung des herder ischen Gedankenerbes und auch eine partielle, jedoch bei

spielhafte bersicht ber die Rezeption der herderischen sprach-, literat ur- und kult ur
kritischen Begriffe, bzw. ber ihre Def initionen und terminologischen Ausd rcke, die
schon zwei Jah rhunderte lang die europischen nationalen sprachlichen, literar ischen
und kult urellen Identitten prgen, berwiegend ohne dass ihr Autor dabei namentlich
erwhnt wird. Auf dem Hintergrund einer so gezeichneten ideologischen Entfaltung wird
es klar, wie unser modernes humanistisches Wissen, Gewissen und Besinnen durch die
Leitgedanken Herders, oder durch die Hauptzge seines intellekt uellen Portrts tief und
dauerhaft gekennzeich net sind.

This paper is about the phenomenon of conversion in Jovan Ster ija Popovis co
medy Rodoljupci. The study of this phenomenon, that is present not only in Serbian lite
rat ure, but also in history and society, has been done in the light of a new discipline that
has been named mentality research or mentalitis. The author has focused his research
of conversion phenomenon on the types of manifestations and the causes of behavior and

actions of the characters in the Sterijas comedy, but is also considering the literary pro
cesses. In this way, that is through mentality research, we can discover new aspects and
deeper levels of Rodoljupci, sit uate them in a wider context of national mentality and
understand Sterijas work even better.

S u m m a r y
The paper analyzes Stojan Novakovis approach to the Croatian question in two
editions of his History of Serbian Literature (1867, 1871) and the role that question had
in his later work on literary history. The paper especially follows Novakovis relation
to Vat roslav Jagis opinion on relations between Serbs and Croats, in context of politics
in the Habsburg Monarchy in the 60s and 70s of XIX cent ury.

NATSUME SOSEK I AND ZEN BUDDHISM

S u m m a r y
In Japan, Natsume Sosekis (18671916) works today have been thought of as a kind
of a modernistic classic, which once had been both a witness and an active founder of
the new, modern Japanese ident ity. Yet, at the same time the contemporary readers
mostly stay unconscient of Sosekis closeness to the Zen Buddhism, that at a deeper level
immensely inf luenced the Japanese spirit for a very long period of time. Recognized as
being a literary classic, Soseki event ually stayed conf ined within the terms of traditio
nally shaped reception, which perceives him as a writer caught between the oppositions
that emerged in the process of shaping modern Japan, such as East and West, individual
and collective, tradition and modernity, etc. Undoubtedly, all of these are the inevitable
elements in understanding the Japanese literat ure of Sosek is time, but putting a too
strong emphasis on them could make us believe that his literat ure today has lost much
of the appeal it once had. However, most of the issues he deals with are of the biggest
interest even today, and it could hardly be an overestimation to say that many of the is
sues pointed out, at times in a rather exaggerating manner, by Soseki seem to be acqui
ring their relevance to understanding the Japanese society of our days. Equipped with
Zen, as a religion of formlessness, Sosek i tried to conceive a way for the literat ure to
communicate with the reader through the narrative in order to lead the former to a dif

ferent understanding of Self in the oncoming time, as he predicted, of egoism and even
increasing uneasiness.

STYLISTIC AND SEM ANTIC ASPECTS OF DER IVATION

S u m m a r y
This paper analyzes the poetic function of der ivatives, whose der ivational stems
consist of either a prepositional phrase beginning with the preposition bezor a complex
suff ixational word. The analyzed examples illustrate wide stylistic and semantic spectrum
of der ivatives, which has manifested itself through construction of fig ures of speech:
antithesis, paradox, gradation, metaphor, etc. The research conducted is of a preliminary
character, and it has shown that der ivatives are unavoidable elements of the struct ure
of literary texts, that they lexicalize the broader sentential context with their forms, and
that they make cont ribut ion to the poet icizat ion of the utterance in the stylistic and
syntactic level.

S u m m a r y
In this paper we review and explain two different editorial of the poet ry book Na
pastbyNovicaTadic first one, published in 1994, and the second one in 2001, which,
honou r ing authors last will, was published in hisCollected poems(2012). By way of
poets proclamations that he writesquickly,on to go, and that he doesnt make too many
interventions on already published works, we hypothesized that in his book of poetryNa
pasthe made minor compositional and stylistic interventions (above all, in graphical
image of poems, lexical changes, or sometimes verse/poem widening or reduction). As
it turns out, the interventions were more signif icant than expected, and we found them
on all texts level. Amongst the observed changes, two types are identif ied as the principal
ones: changes on the level of macro-text (poem), which lead to changes in the thematic
and motif plane, nat ure of poets I as well as the poet ry image, and changes on the level
of micro-text (verse/utterance), which specify the meaning or inf luence suggestiveness
of descriptions. The first type of changes indicates that several poems in the second edi
torial, by way of notable widening relative to the first one, bring in differences not only
on the formal and content plane, but also in the poetic one, changing the nat ure and po
sition of poets I. The second types of changes mainly relates to lexical-semantic and
intonation aspects, and does not transform the original spirit of poem, but still shapes its
stylistic and verbal expression, especially when it is about semantic detailing of utteran
ce or its (increased) irony. The analysis tried to show that all types of interventions in
the second editorial of the book of poet ryNapast are justif ied.

NEW CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BIOGRAPHY OF ATANASIJE STOJKOVI

Summar y
Atanasije Stojkovi (1773-1832) is a multifaceted and intriguing person who was
very significant for Serbian cultural history. There are many sources about him, both
professional and scientific texts written by historians, writers, literary historians, science
historians, astronomers, physicians. Serbian authors studied him and valued his work as a
writer the writer of the first novels in Serbian literature; as a scientist the author of books
from natural sciences and a writer-translator of the New Testament. Because of all these
texts and works we can say that the life and work of Atanasije Stojkovi is well-known
to different scientific circles. The wider public is not familiar with his name and his

contributions to the Serbian and Russian cultures. We can say that there are unverified,
unknown and even contradictory data about him. This paper presents new information
on the studies of Atanasije Stojkovi in Gttingen which are contradictory to the generally accepted views based primarily on Stojkovis personal reports and writing. The
membership of the Royal Learned Society in Gttingen has been confirmed but there is
doubt whether he was a member of the Natural Science Society in Jena. New details are
presented about Stojkovis active social life in Buda and Vienna in the period after he
left Gttingen in 1799 until he went to Russian and was elected professor of physics in
the newly opened University of Kharkov in 1803. We also clarified issues concerning
his membership in scientific academies and medals which he received from the Russian
emperor. It was confirmed that he had two sons (with a wife unknown to us) and we
determined the precise date, place and cause of his death.
