Summary:
Creating the school newsletter was quite fun actually. I enjoyed learning all the things that were going
on in the school. As a teacher, sometimes we have blinders on, and that keeps us from really knowing whats
going on around the school. We are so focused on getting the job done in the classroom, we often forget about
all the interesting things that go on in the extracurricular realm of the school.
I began by sending out an email to the staff asking for information that they would want placed in a
school newsletter. We actually have a school newsletter that is distributed monthly, but I asked if I could take
on the responsibility for a month so I could complete this field experience. I used previous newsletters and the
information sent to me by the staff to complete Novembers newsletter. I used a newsletter template in
Microsoft word to simplify the designing process for myself. There were numerous templates to choose from.
I tried to choose a template that was not too distracting that I could get all my information onto in an organized
manner. Once the newsletter was complete, I copied the newsletter for all the students of the school and we
distributed it to all students in 4th block on Monday November 2nd.
I can honestly say I did not face any obstacles during this process. The teachers were excellent at
responding with information, the program I used was user friendly, and the distribution process was very
simple as well.

Reflective Essay:
Any time there is an opportunity to better understand the communication tools within a school, I think
those opportunities should be taken advantage of. I personally believe a principal should be closely involved
in all aspects of school communication. My principal approves all information posted on websites, social
media or sent to parents and the community. I think this is a great idea. First it keeps the principal in the loop
of what is going on around the school. Second, it keeps people in check and from overstepping their bounds.
This sounds strange, but Ive seen teachers try to communicate and do some pretty sketchy stuff behind the
backs of many principals. This is unacceptable and causes problems for the school.
In this particular assignment, the newsletter was a very easy communication tool to create and
distribute to all students within the school. I did not encounter any major issues while completing this
assignment. The newsletter used to be the main source of info sent home to parents. It was very valuable at
keeping parents informed. Recently with the wave of websites and social media, the newsletter has become
somewhat obsolete. Information can be posted and accessed in much more time efficient ways now. Although
enjoyable to create, I could have distributed all the information in half the time by posting it on the school
webpage, Twitter site, or Facebook page.
In summary, the newsletter was great at distribution tool for large amounts of school information. I
was able to get out everything going on in the month of November ahead of time. Parents like to plan, and

getting the information well in advance is very valuable to parents especially if they have multiple children or
multiple children at different levels of schooling.
