From the Desk of Mrs. Matz

It is hard to believe that May is upon us, which means the end of the school
year is just around the corner. This last month of school will surely fly by,
as it is a very busy month here at FIES!
As we all know, as the weather warms up and summer vacation draws
nearer, it is easy for students to lose focus on their academic and behavior
choices. Please encourage your student(s) to maintain a good work ethic
and continue to make positive behavior choices during this time. We have
several fun events planned during the month of May and it is our hope that
all students have the opportunity to participate in these events. However,
please keep in mind that these fun activities are privileges and may be
taken away as consequences for a students misbehavior:
Field Trips: Third Grade students will be visiting W.W. Knight Nature Preserve on May 1st or 8th; Multiage students will visit the Toledo Museum of
Art on May 13th; Fourth Grade will be traveling to Weber Ranch on May
22nd; Fifth Grade students will be visiting the Toledo Zoo on May 1st. Sixth
Grade students will finish the year off with their Camp Willson Overnight
Camping Trip on May 21st and 22nd. Please watch for more specific information coming from each grade level!
Field Day: On May 27th, we will be holding our Annual FIES Field Day. The
day will be filled with lots of fun and exercise!
Book Fair: FIES will once again be encouraging Summer reading by holding a BOGO book fair May 11th-15th. All items are Buy One Get One Free.

Importance of Summer Learning

Research shows that summer learning is essential to childrens school success.
While children who miss out on summer learning activities risk summer
learning loss and unhealthy weight gain, children who have high quality summer learning opportunities improve their academic and physical health in
ways that are vital to their success in school.
Here are five easy, effective and affordable ways to prevent summer learning
loss and engage your children in summer learning activities that will help
keep them mentally and physically fit, and ready to start the new school year
with success.
1. Read to your children, or encourage your children to read books recommended by their teachers, your local library and online reading lists.
Sign up for a library Summer Reading Program, which offers incentives for summertime reading.
2. Visit free local learning resources around the community or in the
area. Such as libraries, parks, museums, universities and recreation
centers.
3. Play fun math and word games that turn everyday household activities
into learning opportunities. For example, have your kids add up prices
at the grocery store and challenge them to tally up the final bill. When
going on drives, ask them to look for certain shapes, colors, letters or
words on billboards and signs.
4. Ask your childrens teachers to recommend engaging, grade appropriate educational activities that you can easily access online and
download for free.
5. Get moving and get healthy. Turn off the TV, computer, and video
games (or at least put limits on screen time) and keep your kids moving with physical activities that also encourage learning. For example,
organize a scavenger hunt that leads them around a local playground
or park.
Have a great summer!

5TH/6TH
GRADE BAND
CONCERT
WHEN: Friday, May 15
TIME:

7:00 p.m.

WHERE: FIES GYM

The 5th & 6th grade
bands invite you to an
end of the year concert
to be held in the FIES
gymnasium. Participants should arrive at
6:45 p.m. and report to
the Band Room. They
MUST be dressed in
campus wear. All are
welcome to come and
hear the progress these
students have made
this year!

I am continuing to talk with students about Attitude and SelfControl. We have talked specifically about the three things that make up
attitude: how we think, how we feel, and how we act. We talked about
how we have complete control of each of these things for ourselves. We
have talked about taking responsibility for our own choices and actions,
being self-disciplined, and using good judgment when problem solving.
Family Support Groups will be wrapping up in the next few
weeks. These groups have focused mostly on self-evaluation and selfconfidence. If we can reflect on our choices and build our self-confidence,
then we can start to feel better about the situations in our lives that we cannot change or control.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to contact me by phone at 419-436-4125 ext. 3203 or by email at

P.E. NEWS
It is very difficult to believe, but the school year is nearly over. Just because you are on summer break, it does not mean that one should neglect their
physical well-being. In other words, please dont let physical education end on
May 29th!
If your child is entering into the 5th grade next year, encourage them to
work on their pushups, sit-ups, flexibility and running. These aspects are very
important for the 5th grade Ohio Physical Education Assessments. Even if your
child isnt a 5th grader next year, they may be involved in a class that is part of my
SLOs. This SLO is based on Standard 4 of the Ohio Physical Education Assessment, specifically cardiovascular endurance, upper body strength, abdominal
strength, and flexibility.
This summer, encourage your child to take walks, go out for a jog, head
to the city pool, or organize a neighborhood game. If you are fortunate enough
to be playing summer baseball or softball, you are already ahead of the game!
Whatever you decide to do to get your exercise on, have fun and work
hard, and return to school in condition to take on SLOs and the Ohio Physical
Education Assessment.
