1) Rules (2 min)
a. Every team starts off with 5 points
b. If you are not focused or disrupt the class you get points
taken off
c. If 1 team reaches 0 points, the whole class will get
assigned seating
d. There are also prizes like Taqis, Lays, candy
2) Do Now (5 min)
a. You have 5 minutes to finish the Do Now.
b. Give students 30 seconds to consult with their team and
decide on their answer. Tell them that I will call on anyone
so everyone on the team should be prepared.
c. Teams that get it right will get a point.
d. Ask someone from each team what they think a mixed
status family is.
i. Families in which the immigration status of different
family members is different. Some mixed status
families have one person who is undocumented.
ii. What do you think might happen if someone in the
family is undocumented? Turn and talk with your
group for 2 minutes.
3) Close Reading (15 min)
a. Today, we are going to continue talking about immigration
and read an article about a mixed status family.
b. Why do you think each group of questions on your
worksheet has titles?
i. Same as the titles in the article
c. So I want you to take 10 minutes to read and answer the
questions in the first section of the article.
d. Review with students. Ask 2 people to volunteer their
answers and point out where they found the answers in the
text..
