Our focus virtue for the next month or so is TRUSTWORTHINESS
One of the amazing things about virtues (all of the virtues) is that they are never fully mastered. Even
though we get better with practice, we never exhaust the possibilities for getting even better still. Thats
why, as adults, we can join with the kids and explore new ways to practise these virtues better ourselves.
Please discuss the trustworthiness virtue with your children over coming weeks. Spend time talking about
why trustworthiness matters, how you practise it in your life, and maybe set some trustworthiness goals.
Trustworthiness is a crucial virtue which opens the way for deeper friendships and greater responsibilities.
Please find support material attached.
Te Reo
At this weeks meeting the school board committed to funding our Te Reo programme in 2017 along similar
lines to 2016. The kids and staff love this programme, and we have had very positive feedback from parents.
In no small part, the success of this programme is due to the skill and professionalism of Ms Morunga
(Whaea Charlene) whose enthusiasm for Te Reo is absolutely infectious.
BOT Positions
At the last meeting of the BoT specific responsibilities were allocated as follows
Chair
Rebecca Anderson
Secretary
Leroy Lawrence
Treasurer
Mary Finlayson

Attending Matarau School in 2017?
This is for those who know for certain. So ... if your child(ren) will DEFINITELY NOT be with us next
year, please pick up the phone on Monday and let us know, or leave a voice message over the weekend.
It isnt too late ... thank you to those who have already made contact.
no new out of zone places will be advertised for 2017, with the exception
of a very limited number of places in the year 7 and 8 (Cambridge Junior Secondary)
programme.

Now . while the board cannot undertake to do this in perpetuity, in 2017 it will continue to make places
available for out of zone students with siblings already enrolled in the school (where application is made
before the closing date ... around mid-October).
It will also continue to make places available for students who were once in zone, but who now reside out of
zone. Both of these accommodations are not customary practice in many zoned schools, and reflect our
gratitude and commitment to those out of zone families who chose our school, and who, in some cases, travel
from as far away as Onerahi every day so that their children can attend our school. We are humbled by this
vote of confidence.
Out of zone application details, and confirmation of the number of places available in our senior school, will
be publicly advertised sometime around mid-September.
Early notice
Final day of the 2016 school year 15.12.16. First day of school 2017 1.2.17
Finally
You will likely know that our senior students (Year 7 and 8) have an options programme on a Tuesday
afternoon where students are given opportunities to be challenged, to develop new ways of thinking, to
experience secondary school subjects, and even to even scope possible careers. Last week we advised that
one of our science option groups extracted DNA from strawberries. Pretty cool! This week they extracted
their own DNA from cheek cells. Even cooler!!!!

Recycling Old Mobile Phones
After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale of unwanted old mobile
phones it is time for a new multi award winning NZ charity - Sustainable Coastline to
benefit from this scheme. It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers
and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile phones you may have.
Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment benefits by keeping
our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances. Please drop any
unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the Office at School.

From kilometres high in New York City you can see little people as small as ants.
The super powered jet boats slither across the ocean on a nice summers day.
The miniature trees dance like the wind. The aqua sky is like a blanket thrown over
the sky. The hum of the city rises up to the bridge were the workers were sitting
eating their lunch.

The neon lights brighten up the whole of town, guiding you everywhere the light
touches. Taxis hurtle past like a giants foot thundering on the ground. A brooding
sky sulked above like an ocean as it never ends. Buildings towered above
touching the dark blue sky. Billboard signs write out messages inviting a pack of
people in.
Roads were packed with shining lights from the police and taxi cars. An LG sign
loomed above leaving a moonlight trail. Shadows creep around as they loom over
the raven blackness. It was crowded and noisy! You couldn't look anywhere
without seeing people or cars.
