According to some research, waiting is a negative experience. It reflects peoples choices
desire to justify this negative experience.1 This is one of the reasons why there is a high demand
in establishing a lounge. In the Philippines, malls provide own lounges for their regular
customers who want to stretch out and relax or to get some work done. The Prestige Lounge in
SM Store is a premier service and exclusive reward enjoyed by the SM prestige members who
purchase items worth of fifteen thousand pesos a month. SM supermalls have also a lounge set
up for the overseas Filipino whose remittances fuel demand for products sold in the malls, the
Global Pinoy Center. Although this is not entirely for elderly people, it offers free transport to
elderly inside SM mall of Asia as well as various health and wellness activities in SM Malls. On
the other hand, Ayala Malls has a customer service that offers elderly assistance. Moreover, there
are other lounges in the Philippines that are not in the mall. The Diners Club International offers
three lounges in Manila Ninoy International Airport; Pagstop Lounge, Miascor Club Lounge and
Sky View Lounge. Airport lounges are very in demand because large numbers of people pass
through it every day. Since some people have to wait long hours for their flight, it left them no
choice but to stay in the lounge to relax while waiting. Furthermore, the proponents examine the
people in the Malolos, Bulacan who will be the target market. It is concluded that students do not
have a place to stay beside canteen and library. There is no enough space for them to do their
school works during their vacant time. It makes them unproductive while waiting for their next
class. Due to this high demand, the proponents have decided to include them as a potential
market of the business.

Due to the availability of literature on the social and psychological research of place, and
a lack of literature on the design of social places or lounge, this review of literature will focus
primarily on the sociability of the people in staying in the lounge or other related places.

George Simmel, a sociologist (1949) defined sociability as a distinct social form that
distils out of the realities of social life the pure essence of association, of the associative process
as a value and a satisfaction. It refers to the many varieties of playful conversation like the
anecdote, humor, witticism that tend to emerge around recreational activities such as, cardplaying, music or sports. Simmel further explained sociability, as play-form of association, as
a basic human impulse independent of economic interest. Connecting Simmels views about
sociability, places in which sociable association happened called third place (Ray Oldenburg,
1989). He defined it as a generic designation for a great variety of public places that host the
regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms
of home and work. Oldenburg also explained that most of these third places draw their identity
from the beverages they serve. As in the research of Pendergast (1999), that in the history coffee
houses was provided for conversation and political debate. These serve as places to gather, speak
freely and to bond with others from their communities.

According to Chawlas Childhood place attachments (1992), the significance of social

relationships may enhance the activity of people-place bonding. The social involvement of

family, friends, community, and culture are more significant than the place alone. Therefore,
interpersonal, community, cultural, and social relationships that are essential to place
experiences.

Having community space is very important especially for students, as restated in a study
from Physics Today. Creating an environment conducive to the learning is what the study focuses
on and recommends having a comfortable lounge space can improve social life.

The findings of all of these research and studies are enhanced by a situation in which
majority of the respondents are willing to visit the leisure lounge as there is no other place to stay
beside Robinson Malls. Overwhelmingly, the respondents have positive views about this based
on the survey that the proponents conducted that can be found in the Presentation of Data under
Marketing Aspect on Chapter 2.

Beyond research, showing that establishing Chill and Escape Lounge in Malolos,
Bulacan is important to people for them to sit, relax, chat and unwind after a long and hard day,
and for students to complete their homework and laze around. This lounge is more than just a
seating area. It fosters entertainment and relaxation. It boosts people sociability and gives
students a unique learning environment that holds very close to companys mission.
