Vector algebra & Cartesian co-ordinate system

 Answer the following questions in the given space.

Q.1) Referring to figure below, the vectors are defined as A = xax + ya y + zaz and

B = 2ax + 2a y . (a) Find vector component of A along B i.e. AB (b) Find vector

component of A perpendicular to B i.e. AB (d) Show that components AB and AB are

orthogonal. (2+2+2 = 6 points)

A

Solution:
(a)

AB = AB aB = A.aB aB

From the figure we see that:

A = AB + AB (Head-to-Tail rule!)

(c)

To show that components AB and AB are orthogonal, we take their dot product:

( x + y ) ( x y ) + ( x + y ) ( y x ) + 0. z
AB . AB =

( x + y)

[ x y + y x] = 0

Since the dot product is zero, the components are orthogonal.

Q.2) The position of a point P is given as rp = 3ax + 4a y 5az . (a) Find the coordinates of

point P (b) What is the projection of vector rp on x = 0 plane? (2+2 = 4 points)

Solution:
(a) Coordinates of point P are : P ( 3, 4, 5 )

(b) Since x = 0 plane corresponds to y-z plane, there will be no component of the projection

vector of rp along ax direction. Therefore,

Projection vector = 4a y 5az
