he Oracle Technology Network (OTN) has become

a vital part of our day to day lives from gadgets to
shopping and many more today. And moving from
the pioneer founder Oracle to several third parties and
service providers, man has found many ways to utilise the
benefits of Oracles technological capabilities.
In this issue of 10 Fastest Growing Oracle Solution Providers 2016, we are delighted to recognize a few of the
key players in the market and reward them for their consistent growth and innovative offerings since their inception. We at the Silicon Review have taken a close look at
the minds of these 10 business leaders and have attempted to comprehend their thoughts and views by providing
a chance to portray it in the real world platform.
Today, as we stand halfway through 2016, watching out
for what the rest of 2016 would have in store for us, it is
important to understand whether Oracle includes just
ideas, their implementation and successful outcomes? Or,
should it also be considered to include, strategic planning, improvisation on existing offerings and an avenue
to facilitate development in the near future? Thus, in this
edition of The Silicon Review, we are presenting before
you readers, new and different perspectives on various
IT verticals and shall leave it to you to decide how you
would like to innovate and make a space for yourself
amongst other leaders.
That said, we wish all our featured entrepreneurs and
their company all the very best for their endeavors and
leave it to time to decide the future of Oracle.

Q. Brief us about
Perceivants history?

The company started in Healthcare

analytics, but we determined that it
was not enough to just put together
data about a population. We wanted
to reach people and change behavior, to have a lasting impact. Last
year we acquired Bearface Instructional Technologies which has the
well-being education we needed

and have continued to increase our

engagement capabilities. Chris Johnson, the Bearface founder, joined
Perceivant as our President putting
a focused effort into our sales and
product efforts.

Q. What is Perceivants
differentiating factor?

Our solution is entirely customized

to the University and in some situations personalized to the student.
We help the University create the
course they want to teach, leveraging our library of content topics,
as well as our rapid publishing and
technology expertise. Our analytics
make our products smarter and
more engaging to students.

Q. What are the product

offerings of the company?

We offer two products:

An online learning environment
that supports instructor-led
courses in colleges and universities. In this directed learning
environment, students learn
through self-assessment, immediate feedback, reflection, and
problem-solving. This promotes
and reports students ability to
develop strategies and tactics

decisions that help to mitigate
risks, reduce costs, promote
workforce productivity, and
increase value.

We have a unified platform that provides the technology to collect and

analyze data so that you can make
intelligent decisions quickly.

UNC Chapel Hill

Requires All Students to
Use Perceivant Driven
Courseware

University of North Carolina at

Chapel Hill is a top tier institution
known world-wide for its academics
and research as well as an athletic
powerhouse. So it makes sense
that all UNC students must take the
Fitness for Life course, which is a
requirement for graduation. Offered
by the Department of Exercise and
Sport Science, Fitness for Life is
designed to teach students exercise
fitness and testing concepts, including behavior change and problem
solving concepts that they will be
able to apply to their personal and
professional lives after graduation.

Problem

Nearly 5,000 students enroll in

UNCs Fitness for Life course every
year. Students enjoyed the class-

12 | The Silicon Review | July-16

room experience in which they

learned how to assess their fitness,
track their diet, and develop their
own exercise programs. However,
they found the online video materials less than engaging. The video
was slow to load onto students
computers, navigation cumbersome,
and many students complained that
the content was too dry and theoretical.

Furthermore, there were logistical issues. The Fitness for Life lab
manual was printed and distributed
to students through the department
administrative office, causing accounting headaches and absorbing a
lot of the staffs time. Students often
forgot to purchase the lab manual
and came to class without it, frustrating instructors. Becca Battiglini,
the course coordinator, looked to
Perceivant for the solution.

Solution

Perceivant installed a new webbased learning and assessment

system customized to match the Fitness for Life syllabus. The company
created a new custom lab manual
for the course that students can
download, print, and take to class
with them. Perceivant also provided

Instead of the old linear video lectures, the new course materials are
balanced between textbook content,
short video demonstrations, and
interactive activities and quizzes.
Besides the engaging interactivity of
the materials, the online eTextbook
is much easier to access, navigate,
and study. An ePub version of the
textbook can be downloaded by
students on to their mobile devices,
and they can use it to search, bookmark, and highlight the text. These
are features that were not available
in the old system.

Besides improving the online

instructional experience for the
students, the new online self-assessments and labs brought another
benefit: easy data collection and analytics. Where before students wrote
assessment results into their print
lab manual, then can now enter lab
and assessment data online. Not
only does Perceivant better organize
their self-assessment data, but it
enables the students to easily track
their progress by comparing preand post-course results. For faculty,
Perceivant provides an easy to use
data tool with which they can use
aggregated student data to demonstrate the efficacy of the course and
show student course activity beyond
simple quiz scores.
Finally, Perceivant solved the administrative headaches. It took over
distribution of all course materials,
which are now purchased by students online. This freed university
staff to do other tasks while making
the course materials easier to access
by the students.

racle is slowly capturing

which are some of the big clients
amongst 1,800 and more clients that

said Chad Morris, senior ERP systems analyst, Presbyterian Medical
Services. "In just 14 weeks, we were
able to go live on Oracle ERP Cloud
implementing a wide range of efficiencies with our 90+ locations across New
Mexico. We are now in the process of
going live on Oracle HCM Cloud."
Hospitals and healthcare systems are
contending with increased financial
pressures resulting from rising costs
coupled with reduced collections, an
influx of data, and changing patient
interactions due to high-deductible
healthcare plans, said Rod Johnson,
senior vice president, Oracle. We are
committed to delivering innovative
cloud solutions that help these healthcare organizations thrive and gain
competitive advantage amid shifting
industry conditions. Oracle ERP Cloud
increases operational efficiencies and
identifies growth areas to help healthcare organizations cost-effectively

Built on a secure scalable architecture, Oracle ERP Cloud delivers

is fully integrated with Oracle Human

cost efficiency, Healthcare industries
are opting to change their current
systems that are incompetent to

organizations will accelerate their

Upping the ante in online database

services with Oracle Database
Cloud Exadata

loud customers have always

enjoyed certain benefits when
it comes to cloud. They include cost effectiveness, flexibility, scalability, etc. The only area
where it has lacked is with respect to
extreme performance. Oracles latest
highest-performing database engineered system- the Oracle Database
Cloud Exadata Service is going to
speed-up cloud computing performance to a whole new level.
With its ability to support the most
demanding online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical
(OLAP, data warehousing) applications, and bolstered by the elasticity
of the Oracle Cloud, the Oracle Database Cloud Exadata Service will offer
price/performance advantages that
should appeal to large and midsize
organizations alike.

The Oracle Exadata Database Machine

is part of Oracles engineered systems
family, which includes customized
combinations of hardware, software,
and storage that are highly tuned
for maximum performance. Other
products in the group include the
Oracle Database Appliance, the Oracle
Exalogic Elastic Cloud, and the Zero
Data Loss Recovery Appliance.
Introduced in 2008, Oracle
Exadata, benefits from the engineering expertise Oracle gained
from its 2010 acquisition of Sun
Microsystems. Exadatas hardware
and software capabilities have undergone considerable customization

and optimization since that time. It

employs cutting-edge hardware such
as high-performance scale-out database servers and scale-out intelligent
storage servers, connected by an
ultrafast, low-latency InfiniBand network. Along with high-capacity disks,
Oracle Exadata includes state-of-theart PCI flash storage, which delivers
the highest throughput and the best
response times. For its database, Oracle Exadata uses the latest generation
of the Oracle flagship system, Oracle
Database 12c Enterprise Edition, and
incorporates its most cutting-edge
database features:

Multitenant architecture, which

supports multiple, fully functioning pluggable databases within a
physical database.
In-memory database, which loads
columnar data directly into the
hardwares memory for greater
analytic speed.
Oracle Real Application Clusters
(RAC), Oracles server-clustering
technology, which provides scaleout and automatic failover in a
high-speed cluster.

There is also a capability in Oracle

Exadata called in-memory fault
tolerance, which basically mirrors
in-memory data across nodes of the
system so that if a node crashes, the
system will keep running without interruption, with data still in memory.

Since its inception, the software

was architected for the cloud. Thats
because the system is engineered and

sold in building-block increments of

hardware servers and storage servers.
Customers can add and expand servers as their demands for performance
and capacity increase.
Oracle Exadatas multitenant database architecture offers one of the
clouds most strategic benefits:
consolidation. A customer can condense multiple databases onto one
instance of the Oracle Database Cloud
Exadata Service and still receive all
the performance advantages proffered by the system.
A potential problem endemic to
cloud computing which is addressed
by Exadata is unpredictable system
performance. In a generic cloud
environment, with many hundreds
or thousands of users accessing the
same finite capacity, customers have
to worry whether sufficient compute
resources will be available to them at
all times - especially during critical
times. Not so with Oracle Database
Cloud Exadata Service.

Of course, the Oracle Database

Cloud - Exadata Service provides the
typical strategic advantages of cloud
computing: OpEx over CapEx, easy
and fast implementation, on-demand
scalability. But it also offers a unique
benefit not to be underestimated: Oracle experts who deploy and manage
high-performance Oracle infrastructure.

We believe coupling a change

management platform with
client-focused strategies is the
key to success

in 1991 and headquartered
in New York, AxiomSL is the
leading enterprise risk management
and regulatory reporting provider
serving the financial services
industry and technology partners
such as Oracle and their clients.

AxiomSLs clients include many

global Tier One banking institutions,
as well as an array of Tier Two
banks, asset managers, broker
dealers and insurers that it serves
from offices in London, Luxembourg,
Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Singapore,
Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Medellin
and Sao Paulo.
Following the global financial

crisis, AxiomSL empowers firms to

meet evolving and new compliance
requirements and manage growing
operational costs with a dynamic
platform addressing regulatory, risk
and data management challenges.
AxiomSLs change management
platform not only aggregates and
enriches source data across the
entire enterprise, but also enables
financial firms to implement the
processes and controls to successfully navigate through the maze of
regulatory complexities, as well
as, attests to the accuracy of the
reports. This integrated platform
delivers traceability, transparency
and greater clarity about the
organizations financial position
and risk exposure while producing

timely reports with the analytics

required by regulators and internal
management demands.

One key distinction for AxiomSL

with its 25 years experience and
deep domain expertise is that its
robust platform is agnostic to both
system type and data format. While
focusing on global and regional
solutions for our clients, AxiomSL
provides the flexibility to interface
with products from the largest tech
companies in the world, including
Oracle, to ensure compliance with
multiple regulatory mandates and
external and internal reporting.

We maintain strategic development

alliances with audit, financial and

technology industry leaders, financial data providers, hardware, and

analytical software providers to
guarantee that our clients receive
both the best breed and a flawless implementation of their IT and business
requirements, Alex Tsigutkin says.
We believe coupling a change management platform with client-focused
strategies is the key to success.

Working with Oracle

One recent project completed with

Oracle Financial Services Analytical
Applications (OFSAA) and a mutual
global banking client demonstrated
how AxiomSL collaborates in just
that way.

In this case, AxiomSL was brought in

as the regulatory reporting solution
and data management specialist to
address a number of challenging
gaps, stemming from the clients
data normalization needs. These
gaps included data conversions,
annualizing averages into rates,
and pulling of data which did not fit
cleanly into a Star- style dimensional modeling schema. In addition,
AxiomSL was used as a front end to
analyze the Data model and to perform data quality assessment and
variance analysis.

AxiomSL was able to work around

these limitations, providing the
mapping and standardization necessary to successfully achieve the
banks required conversions and
analysis. By setting up this process
at the final reporting layer, rather
than breaking down the data warehouse, both the implementation cost
and operational challenges associated with the project were minimized.

Customer Focus: CEO

Q&A

Alex Tsigutkin speaks regularly

at both technology and financial
services conferences, addressing

topics such as dealing with changes

in regulatory and risk management,
achieving transparency and data
lineage/governance across the enterprise, implementing controls
& processes, data warehouse and
financial firms regulatory
challenges.

Conversely, the CEO notes that

advising senior management and
database engineers on a variety of
projects has helped bring new ideas
back to AxiomSL as it continues to
address the expanding risk management and compliance standards.
Here are a few additional thoughts
from Alex.

Q. Can you tell us about how

your firm is positioned in the
contemporary regulatory
environment?

A. AxiomSLs change management

platform meets both the latest
and ongoing regulatory reforms.
The platforms unique approach
aggregates and enriches data from
various core financial and risk
applications without any data
conversion, allowing for greater
efficiency and leveraging on
existing workflows and processes.
It provides multidimensional analysis capabilities via disaggregation of
an entire portfolios risks and exposures, isolating those components to
the lowest level of granularity while
supporting multiple submission
formats including XBRL.

Financial organizations are dealing

with a slew of regulatory mandates,
such as Basel III reporting rules,
BCBS 239 Principles, Comprehensive Capital Adequacy Review
(CCAR), liquidity and stress testing
requirements, IFRS 9, FRTB, net capital calculations for broker dealers
and many more. Strong IT infrastructure providing data lineage,
automated workflow, analytics,
reconciliation and other business

functions is a crucial need for firms

facing these mandates today.

Q. How does one distinguish

your offerings from that of
your competitors? What is
the added advantage that
one can enjoy by using
AxiomSLs platform and
services?

A. Many of the new reporting

requirements our clients face imply
operational and technical complexities that can be both expensive
and time-consuming to properly
engineer and manage over time,
with millions of data points lying
across dozens of legacy systems.
Our platform steps in and acts as an
integration layer, implemented with
minimal internal disruption and
without a black box mentality.

In addition to our core risk data aggregation capabilities, the platform

combines deep domain expertise
with new innovation to provide
clients the depth of information,
access, and controls required in
todays operating environment.
Today, this innovation includes efficient task execution, sophisticated
dashboards, user interface tools, and
permissioning among other focus
areas.
The industry press has long recognized our efforts in the marketplace
by bestowing numerous rankings
and awards upon us (both judged
and voted upon directly by our clients). Most recently, we were awarded Best Compliance Risk Technology
Implementation of the year by The
Asian Banker and also the Best Implementation at a Sell Side firm by
Waters Technology and last year, we
received the Customer Satisfaction
Award in RiskTech.

The Oracle
Partner Cloud Program
The program helps partners showcase their expertise and accelerate their Oracle Cloud businesses

ccording to analysts at IDC, at least half of IT

spending will be for cloud-based services by
2018. This strategic shift is complex, however,
as companies move to the cloud job by job, working
in a hybrid environment as they go. Businesses are
no more contemplating if they should move to the
cloud or not, instead they want to determine when
and how they should make this move.

To facilitate this transition to the cloud, many companies have turned to experienced guides from Oracles
partner ecosystem to help navigate the journey. This
dedicated partner community brings deep expertise
to the table, and Oracle is committed to supporting
them with transformative new cloud programs from
Oracle Partner Network (OPN).
Oracles rapid growth and extensive SaaS, PaaS,
and IaaS cloud portfolio presents an unparalleled
opportunity for partners and customers alike. The
company can now equip highly experienced partners
with the tools they need to successfully move their
customers to modern business models. This vast
partner community includes tens of thousands of
implementation experts with transferable skills who
can help our customers navigate their transition to
the cloud.

20 | The Silicon Review | July-16

The new OPN Cloud program provides opportunities

for partners to quickly build successful businesses
around Oracle Cloud. The program helps accelerate
innovation, lead business transformation, and fully
realize the competitive advantages offered through
Oracle Cloud.
The program offers designations that let partners
showcase their expertise, skills, and investment in
Oracle Cloud and strengthen their value to joint customers. Tiers include:

Cloud Standard - As the first tier in the pro-

gram, Cloud Standard is designed to help partners

differentiate themselves in the market. These partners have developed skills and expertise in Oracle
Cloud services and are typically focused on a specific
or specialized solution within one of Oracles key
product pillars. Oracle is committed to helping Cloud
Standard partners increase their cloud expertise and
leverage opportunities around Oracle Cloud Services
to grow their Oracle Cloud business.

Cloud Select - Partners at the Cloud Select tier

have expertise in Oracle Cloud services and dedicated teams focused specifically on driving their Oracle
Cloud business. Cloud Select partners expertise is
validated by achieving cloud specialization and/
or developing and selling Oracle Cloud technology
or services, as well as through successfully working
with customers to launch their Oracle Cloud Services
solutions. OPN members who have attained the Cloud
Select designation will be recognized with additional
benefits to help them go to market more effectively in
the key areas of sales, enablement, support, development, and marketing.

Cloud Premier - Recognized for their proven

success with Oracle Cloud Services, Cloud Premier

partners have transformed their business to focus
specifically on driving their Oracle Cloud solutions
with successful and repeatable customer use cases.

Cloud Premier partners feature a number of cloud

specializations or applications integrated with or
built on Oracle Cloud Services, dedicated Oracle
Cloud teams, Certified Oracle Cloud Implementation
Specialists, and multiple customer success stories.
Partners at this level will benefit from high levels of
enablement, go-to-market, and engagement resources within their regions.

Cloud Elite - The highest program designation,

Cloud Elite features highly skilled and committed

partners who have demonstrated full investment
across the depth and breadth of Oracle Cloud solutions and dedication to delivering them to joint customers. These partners attain their initial status by
driving a significant amount of Oracle Cloud business.
Once partners attain this tier, either regionally as a
Cloud Elite partner or globally as a Global Cloud Elite
partner, they will achieve recognition for their extensive expertise within specific Oracle Cloud product
pillars. Expertise will be validated by achieving multiple specializations, advanced specializations, and
fixed-scope repeatable customer use case offerings,
as well as through the number of successful customer
implementations completed by the partner. Cloud
Elite partners will be priority go-to-market partners
who will benefit from the highest engagement and
commitment from Oracle for joint, focused cloud
business growth.

The power consumption levels of this environmentallyconscious web hosting provider were making it

could reduce its power consumption, while maintaining
responsiveness and high availability.

Sirius Computer Solutions has the in-depth technology

energy consumption, system redundancy and scalability
requirements as well as the corporate mission of an

flexibility to host additional clients and increase
revenue potential.
Server and storage consolidation reduced data center
power consumption by approximately 60 percent.
Replacement of 120 white box servers with four,

the companys longstanding relationship with Sirius, AHS
could be confident that they would get the best possible
solution to their server replacement challenge.

Key Benefits

AHS was able to migrate workload from eight older

Power Systems servers running different versions of
i5/OS onto a single Power 750 server running IBM i.
The combined hardware and software maintenance
contract for the new server costs less than 10 percent
of what it would have cost for the old servers.
AHS only has one footprint instead of six at its colocation site.
Daily reporting times have been reduced from more
than five hours to about 90 minutes.
There were considerable data center savings in terms
of power consumption, cooling and footprint.
A three-year lease through IBM Global Financing
reduced the up-front cost to affordable monthly
payments, and facilitates the companys technology
refresh strategy.

With all the money were saving, along with the extra
performance, the decision to migrate to the new Power

Oracle has been rapidly growing its

When both Parexel an international,

industries and Hanover Insurance

a multi-billion dollar insurance

provider experienced rapid growth
they occupied Peloton to address
their rising issues. Parexel was in a
need to modernize the finance function to support future growth and
business analytics to drive business
performance. To drive this initiative,
it engaged Peloton for a Finance
Transformation initiative, focused
on key financial and operational
processes, leveraging new enabling
technology, and empowering the
finance team to learn new skills.
Hanover on the other hand, experienced a high growth period and had
multiple legacy models, resulting in
inefficiencies in their planning process and needed a strategy to handle
their growth. Peloton worked with
Hanover to streamline its capabilities and tools by delivering a finance
transformation which impacted the
budgeting, planning, forecasting and

Oracle fails in its attempt

to overturn pro-Google
jury verdict

oogle succeeded in its case

to a jury that its use of JAVA
APIs in Android was just
used against Oracles claim that the
mobile system intruded its copyrights.
US District Judge William Alsups
slashing order rejected Oracles
argument on every context. However, the document provided an
insight as to what may be brought
in the proceeding appeal by Oracle,
which the company has agreed to
pursue. The evidence and instructions placed to the jury were a
mix of mandates from the appeals
court, which was not acceptable by
the judge for API copyright being
the key issue and modifications
urged by both sides lawyers. The
judge also defended on how he ran
the trial.
Few quotes from the Judgment
written by the Judge William
Alsup:

38 | The Silicon Review | July-16

"The final jury charge culminated

an exhaustive and iterative process
of proposals by the judge followed
by critiques by counsel. Oracle has
portrayed the Java programming
language as distinct from the Java
API library, insisting that only the
language itself was free for all to
use," Alsup writes. He continues:
Oracle's argument boils down to
saying that it was okay to use the
language, and okay to use the 62
"necessary" classes, but that Google
"should have scrambled the functionalities among a different taxonomy of packages and classes."
That would have required programmers to learn two different
systems of "structure, sequence and
organization," or SSO, the judge
noted. The jury could reasonably
have found that such a division
"would have fomented confusion
and error."
"By analogy, all typewriters use the

same QWERTY keyboard-imagine

the confusion and universal disservice if every typewriter maker had
to scramble the keyboard. Oracles
harsh cross-examination focused on
character assassination and showing that Schwartz resented Oracle
for its treatment of Schwartz after
the buyout," writes Alsup. "That
Oracle resorted to such impeachment underscores how fact-bound
the issue was, another classic role of
a jury to resolve."

Oracle

eyeing to
acquire Salesforce

ergers and Acquisitions are planned by IT

corporate to develop a new business line
or to aid the existing business. LinkedIn
is being acquired by Microsoft in order to
facilitate the development of the human
resource and finance planning products. Now it
is Oracles turn and the company is eyeing at acquiring Salesforce. Microsofts deal for LinkedIn
was $26.2 billion, a 47% premium on its market
value. Estimations are that Oracle might invest
at least 25% premium on Salesforces market
value. Lately, Salesforce shares trades at $82,
its market value being around $55 billion. The
52-week high of $84.48 would get the deal done
from around $105 per share. So, this is a good
time to invest in Salesforce rather than selling
the shares.
Oracle and Salesforce offer enterprise software
for sales and other functions. Oracle is contesting to catch Salesforce in with its subscrip-

tion-based software. At the same time, these

companies together will complement each
others weaknesses. For instance, Salesforce
cloud expertise is short of ideas and stands
saturated at enterprise IT space. While Oracle
proved its prowess in catching up to Salesforce
in the cloud; it is always on track and never will
miss the track.
Customer Relationship Management of Microsoft is ruled by Salesforce at present. However,
Oracle may get the chance to take the lead at
Microsoft as it is planning to widen its deal
with Oracle. With this merger, the companies
will have mutual benefits for their businesses
together on the cloud.

Company of the Month

Empowering Professional Services Organizations
to be Profitable, Scalable, and Efficient:

TOP Step Consulting

Since 2007, TOP Step has served over 270 organizations across the globe. The company was awarded Best of the Best by SPI
Research for a seventh consecutive year and ranked as one of the fastest-growing private companies by Inc. 5000 in 2016.

Knowing the Key Executive

Jodi Cicci, President and CEO - Jodi has been

implementing software systems for over 25 years in both

commercial and government organizations. After quickly
rising through the ranks of software developer, project lead,
and project manager, she moved into operational management roles within professional services where she began
paving her way toward being an expert in setting strategies
for operations efficiencies using process and tools. Jodi
had led large organizations in establishing a Project Management Office and compliant processes for companies to
obtain CMM certification. She has worked with many global
organizations to establish standard business operating
practices by deploying PSA tools. In one particular case this
involved 23 worldwide offices and accomplished in less than
1 year. Because of the breadth of understanding business
operations, technology and cultural differences across the
globe Jodi has developed TOP Step into a leading provider of
business operations efficiency services.
One of Jodis many passions is for her customers to have the
knowledge and information they need to be successful. In
working with any customer, business understanding and
how the business runs is always first never technology.
This passion to ensure her customers have the knowledge
they need is also evidenced in her leadership to help establish customer advocacy programs for NetSuite OpenAir and
FinancialForce including the user community, user forums,
and informative webinars.

Jodi Cicci, President & CEO

48 | The Silicon Review | July-16

Prior to her OpenAir involvement, Jodi held the position of

Global Project Management Director for Software AG, Inc.
with global responsibility for PS tools and business process
efficiency. She worked with both commercial and government customers in her leadership roles in Software AG, Inc.
as well as her previous experience with Lockheed Martin.

Our mission is to enable and empower Professional Services

organizations to be profitable, scalable, and efficient through
change management, process enhancement, technology deployment, and skill set training with a Customer First approach.

ith a customer first

approach and proactive
information dissemination
to the customer community, TOP
Step Consulting positions itself as
the primary organization to engage
with related to PSA (Professional
Services Automation) decision making, deployment, and enhancement.
TOP Steps focus on Professional
Services consulting singles it out
when compared with other consulting firms as the company strives to
meet and deliver on all challenges in
this space. Many of its solutions involve coordinating with other parts
of the organization such as finance
due to which the knowledge base
has to be extensive to address endto-end solution considerations.
We position ourselves as one of the
top Professional Services Automation (PSA) solution providers in the
industry. To maintain this position,
we strive to keep on top of changing
technology by partnering with the
PSA vendors we support, said Jodi
Cicci, President and CEO.

TOP Step Consulting is also actively

involved in many Professional Services Industry organizations including TSIA and PS Village to contribute
to and learn about the evolution of
best practices and business processes. This information provides insight
for customers as the company works
to introduce change and establish
process and solutions for more efficient and productive workforce.

Company History

TOP Step Consulting began in 2007

in response to the need for business consulting within the professional services industry for a SaaS
Professional Services Automation
(PSA) solution called OpenAir. The
company focused on customer
empowerment through knowledge
transfer and the implementation of
best practices within professional
services and project-based organizations. It quickly became viewed
as the leader related to NetSuite
OpenAir. TOP Step expanded to
include FinancialForce solutions in
2014 to continue the path of PSA
experts and best practices while
also diversifying options for customers to consider. The company strives
to be the top provider of consulting services for PSA solutions and
assisting customers in selecting and
deploying the best fit tool.

PSA Focused Solution

Offerings

PSA focused solutions such as Business Efficiency Assessments and Deployments are offered by TOP Step.
Business Efficiency Assessments
ensure technology is aligned to
your business model and therefore
the technology is working for you
instead of changing how you do
business. Deployments follow a
proven methodology of customer
engagement and business modeling
to ensure that data capture and metrics reporting help organizations
realize the investment benefits of
the PSA tool.
TOP Step also provides Project
Management Office Consulting

to businesses to help them deliver projects more successfully and

to have more predictable project
execution and management of their
projects.

Clientele

A majority of the companys clientele are from the technology and

media sectors. However, TOP Step
aims to assist any business or organization that needs to have better
efficiency with its project-based
work. We value each client equally,
whether they are a small start-up
or established corporation, and they
range from media and tech companies or companies needing to improve global operations and business
efficiency and productivity, said Jodi.

Heres what clients are

saying about TOP Step
Consulting

Having a consulting partner like

TOP Step Consulting that understands the Professional Services
industry, helped us to successfully
define business processes, and align
them with best practices in FinancialForce PSA. The experience TOP
Step brings from having worked
across a large customer base, and
with complex global organizations
in the past is invaluable. The speed
and effectiveness in which the initial
deployment was completed is proof
of that. Ultimately, our success is not
just with the software, but with the
capability of the partner who helped
us implement it. We are very pleased
with both TOP Step Consulting and
FinancialForce, and we look forward

into the future.

The TOP Step Consulting Reporting

Workshop was right on the mark and
absolutely what we needed. Not only
did we solve our reporting challenges, but we also benefited greatly by
spending time with the experts who
truly understand how to use OpenAir
to support the business. TOP Step
really gets it. They listened carefully
and shared numerous tips and tricks
and provided creative ways to solve
our unique challenges. TOP Step
understood where we were coming
from, presenting the information in a
very engaging and helpful way one
that we could digest and use into the
future. TOP Step Consulting are true
professionals and clearly the experts.
Joel Mischke, Controller, ECS Team
TOP Step Consulting worked with us
in solving our resource management
challenges. Our business is cyclical in
nature with very high demand periods. It is critical during these periods
of time to understand our resource
availability and utilization. TOP Step
helped us configure our OpenAir
system based on our unique business
model and the challenges we were
facing. We now have the information
to manage our resources efficiently
and effectively.

Improving Resource
Coordination for
iModules
Business Challenge

iModules implemented NetSuite

OpenAir late in 2014. Although they
understood the benefits of using a
Professional Services Automation
system, they quickly realized that
they had not initially configured
the system that best matched their
specific business model. iModules
had installed and configured a
system with minimum functionality,
which led to frustration and low
adoption of the system. One of iModules primary needs was to improve
resource coordination, including
the ability to forecast resources and
report on resource utilization.

Solution

iModules met TOP Step Consulting

during the SuiteWorld conference
and were pleased to discover that
guidance and expertise were available to help iModules configure NetSuite OpenAir to meet their particular business needs. A decision was
quickly made to bring in TOP Step
Consulting to conduct a Business Efficiency Assessment. During the two

day workshop, iModules and TOP

Step Consulting worked through the
challenges iModules faced: workflow, roles and responsibilities of
individuals within each department
with the system, and understanding
data and information needs. Once
this first critical step was completed, iModules and TOP Step then
reviewed the NetSuite OpenAir configuration to determine where the
gaps existed. Out of this, TOP Step
documented actions and recommendations for configuring the OpenAir
system, including functionality
changes, reporting adjustments, and
staff training needs. Lastly, iModules
prioritized the actions, and TOP Step
laid out a plan for implementation
to ensure adoption and achievement
of iModules goals.

The Virtual Company

TOP Step is a virtual company with

staff across the United States. A majority of its customers are headquartered in North America or Europe,
resulting in a global customer footprint and international expertise.

The Road Ahead

TOP Step will continue to look at

building out specialty practice areas
for other automation tools beyond
NetSuite, OpenAir and FinancialForce based on the market demand.

SR

We have experience that comes from running PS companies and therefore understand the needs of professional
services organizations. We map productivity based on the
business model of each individual business.

InfiniBand Supercomputer
Standard in Oracle Cloud
Networking

nfiniBand (IB), a computer-networking communications standard used in high-performance

computing, features very high throughput and
very low latency. It is used for data interconnect
both among and within computers. InfiniBand is also
utilized as either a direct or switched interconnect
between servers and storage systems, as well as between storage systems.

InfiniBand Products were most commonly used to

interconnect in supercomputers in 2014. Mellanox
and Intel InfiniBand host bus adapters and network
switches. In Feb 2016, Oracle engineered its own
InfiniBand and Server adapter chips for use in its
own products and products of the third party.
Oracles EDR IB (Enhanced Data Rate InfiniBand)
runs at 100 Gb/Sec. However, Oracles roadmap was
to move the speed up to 200 Gb/Sec and also to use
it on the cloud. Oracle EDR IB supports Message
Passing Interface protocol which is used in super
computer clusters running simulations and models.
Oracle EDR Infiniband adapter card is used on own
servers like the Xen hypervisor as well as they are
compatible with other servers such as VMware ESXi
and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor. Oracles own variants such as Linux and Solaris can drive Oracle EDR
IB. It can also run on other Linux variants such as Red
Hat and SUSE Linux.

Oracles entry into InfiniBand

Products

While Oracle was still using Mellanox, one of the

biggest suppliers of switch and server adapter
chips, the company moved on to make their own
InfiniBand adapter and switches. Oracle was not new
to InfiniBand, in fact, the company had engineered on
Sonoma Chips embedded IB Controller. The company
was also associated with Mellanox for Oracle EDR IB.
Marshall Choy, Vice President of systems solutions
at Oracle, is of the opinion that having control on
Intellectual Property will help the company master
its own destiny. According to him, this is one of the
development methodologies that the company has
been following since the start of engineered systems.
However, Oracle continues to sell Mellanox IB as well
as its own EDR IB and remains associated with the
company to increase the role of IB in Cloud networking.

Oracle and Mellanox announcing their partnership

in mid-June are jointly driving the increased usage
of InfiniBand in Cloud networking technology. The
companies are rigorous on developing InfiniBand
products and raising its industry standards to achieve
high-speed Cloud networking. They have decided to
work on interoperability, open standards, and backward compatibility for InfiniBand products.

Redefining Cloud Networking with

InfiniBand Standard

InfiniBand products provide extreme bandwidth

with ultra-low latency for fast, agile and secure cloud
infrastructure. IB products based on the Industry
Standard are available from multiple vendors. Oracle
in association with Mellanox is in the drive of developing InfiniBand products which is accepted and adopted in the market and raises it to open standards.
Oracle and Mellanox 100G EDR IB products were
engineered to the InfiniBand Architecture Specification Release 1.3 and allow customers to deploy a
100 GB/s fabric that is backward compatible with
the previous generations of InfiniBand-based
systems such as FDR, DDR, QDR, and SDR. This
enables customers to protect their investments in
InfiniBand-enabled applications.
The architecture of Oracle and Mellanox InfiniBand
products will seamlessly integrate with existing
InfiniBand infrastructures and customers will be
able to continue with the supplier of their choice.
High performance, interoperability, raised industrial standards and backward compatibility; all in
a package will be the outstanding architecture of
Oracle-Mellanox InfiniBand.

Oracles core strategy revolves around Cloud and

Engineered systems to deliver services with the
highest performance, most efficiency and large security. InfiniBand fabric processes a massive amount
of data and thereby has proved its superior performance, efficiency and scalability in building Super
Computers. InfiniBand will be the foundation for
networking in Oracle Cloud and Engineering systems
resulting in unmatched performance and scale of
Oracles suite of business critical applications.
According to Raju Penumatcha, senior vice president, Oracle-Mellanox partnership is an enduring
commitment to customers in providing technologies
and standards for a true enterprise-class cloud infrastructure. This is to enable customers to accelerate
application performance and quickly respond to
changing business needs.

We Have Two Focus Points for

FY 2016
says Oracle CEO Larry Ellison

racle Executive
Chairman and CTO
Larry Ellison stands
on two points of focus
for the company as it enters its
fiscal year 2017: Grow Oracles
cloud software and platform
businesses at double the rate
of its closest competitors, and
use generation two of the
companys high-performance
data centers to become an
even more formidable player in
cloud infrastructure.

Were growing fast in SaaS.

Were growing fast in PaaS. Now
we need to grow fast in infrastructure as a service, Ellison
said on Oracles fourth-quarter
FY2016 earnings.
Oracles SaaS (software-as-a-

service) and PaaS (platformas-a-service) businesses have

been in high-growth mode,
with revenue reaching a
combined $690 million in the
fourth quarter, up 66% from
the year-earlier quarter and up
68% in constant currency. IaaS
(infrastructure-as-a-service)
revenue, by comparison, rose
5% to $169 million, and rose
8% in constant currency.
In SaaS and Paas, Oracle plans
to drive growth by offering the
broadest product line among
its major cloud competitors
and by reaching a new swath
of midmarket companies that
Oracle didnt serve in the precloud era. In IaaS, Oracle plans
to use its new data centers to
gain a performance advantage.

Weve made the investments,

Ellison said. We have the right
technology with our second-generation data centers, and were
very excited about the potential
for Oracle with the combination
of PaaS and infrastructure as
a service for our huge installed
base of database customers and
helping them move to the cloud.

The dependency of
Independent Software
Vendors on Oracle Cloud

eing an independent
software vendor (ISVs)
is tough. Your growth or
even survival depends on
selling and running your software
with the latest changes in information technology. Cloud computing
is something thats spreading like
wildfire to every organization in
the globe. Customers are now expecting every product or solution
to have a cloud-based integration.
ISVs in general, are forced to introduce a cloud-based model for all
their software products.
Oracle, Inc. has a decade-long
history of helping ISVs use Oracle
technology to thrive, and today it is
helping ISVs succeed in the cloud,
using Oracle Cloud Platform. More
than 10,000 ISV apps are ready to
run on Oracle Cloud. Why do ISVs
choose Oracle Cloud? Lets find
out.

60 | The Silicon Review | July-16

1. Faith in Oracle
technology

On-premise use of Oracle technology has been going on for years

for ISVs. From the development
environment, database, and
middleware to Oracles on-premises applications and now its SaaS
offerings, the ISVs have come to
know and trust Oracle technologies. ISVs software - their intellectual property - is their business, so
the platform has to run, and it has
to run well.

2. They have built huge

competency in Oracle
technology

Apart from trusting Oracles

technology, ISVs have developed
tremendous competency around
Oracle technology, from the Java
programming language to Oracle
Database and from engineered

systems to services.
Oracle lets ISVs continue to drive
value from that knowledge and
experience. Because Oracle Cloud
Platform runs on the same Oracle
technology as their on-premises
software, ISVs don't need to rewrite
applications running on Oracle
technology in order to migrate
them to the cloud. This is a very
fundamental business choice for
ISVs that want to maximize their
investment while offering customers both current solutions and
next-generation cloud solutions.

3. ISVs see opportunity in

selling to Oracles 425,000plus customer base.

Oracles customer base of more

than 425,000 has always been a
prime market for ISVs. To reach
those customers, theyve often
teamed with Oracle. This is because

the company needs ISVs to meet

the diverse needs of enterprise
customers. The opportunity is
magnified by Oracle Cloud Marketplace by providing an online
market through which enterprises
of any size, around the world, can
find and access cloud applications.
The marketplace also makes it
possible for ISVs to automate the
buying process, so a customer
can buy without interacting with
sales or support employees, and
allows them to reach international
customers without a global sales or
implementation team.

4. Innovation will be their

focus area
Running Oracle Cloud will help

ISVs to focus their resources on

their own innovation and on how
to add value to their products and
for their customers, while letting Oracle take care of patching,
security, backup, and other elements involved in running a cloud
application.
Having Oracles resources, competency, and reputation behind their
cloud applications is a huge plus,
especially for smaller ISVs trying
to win the confidence of large enterprise customers.
You put the two of those togetherOracles business experience and the
best technology - and that becomes a
very compelling proposition for ISVs

to continue to partner with Oracle,

or if theyre new to Oracle, to
start working with Oracle, said
Dan Miller, Oracle senior vice
president of Oracles ISV and
OEM business.
