ASSIGNMENT 1
(a) Due Thursday, January 28, 2016 in class before class starts. Late assignments will not be accepted.
(b) Please begin the solution to each question on a new page and then arrange your solutions in the
correct order before stapling.
1. Prove that if x is a periodic point of period m for f (x), then it is a periodic point of period `m for
f (x), where `, m 2 {1, 2, 3, . . . , }. (Hint: Use induction.)
2. Define a tent map,
T (x) =

if x 12 ,
x), if 12 x.

(i) Sketch the graph of T (x) labelling it appropriately, and find all fixed points and determine if they
are attracting or repelling analytically. Show all your work to get full marks. Then use XPPAUT to
check your work. Submit a hardcopy of the graphs produced by XPPAUT. Label them appropriately.
(ii) Sketch the graph of T 2 (x) on x 2 [0, 1] either by hand or using XPPAUT. Label it appropriately.
Only submit one of the graphs. Then define T 2 (x) explicitly (where T (x) was defined above).
[Hint: T ( 13 ) = 12 = T ( 23 ) and T ( 12 ) = 34 . Divide up [0, 1] into 4 pieces, [0, 13 ], [ 13 , 12 ], [ 12 , 23 ], [ 23 , 1] and
look where each interval is mapped.]

same graph, just different initial conditions for fixed points

(iii) Find all points with prime period-2 for T (x) and determine if they are attracting or repelling analytically. Show your work to get full marks. Then use XPPAUT to check your work by cobwebbing.
Submit appropriate graph(s) produced by XPPAUT.
(iv) Give an example of a periodic orbit of T (x)) with prime period strictly greater than 2.
