Answer all questions.

1. Express x(3x – 2) = x2 + 5 in the general form. [2m]

2. The quadratic equation 2 x( x  2 p)  x  2 p 2 has two distinct roots. Find the


range of values of p. [4m]

3. Solve the quadratic equation 2x(x – 4) = (1 – x)(x + 2). Give your answer correct
to four significant figures. [6m]

4. Given that m and n are the roots of the quadratic equation x2 + 3x – 9 = 0, form

5. The roots of the quadratic equation 2x2 + 11x – 40 = 0 are 2e and (f - 2). Calculate

7. Given the function f(x) = x2 + mx +n has a minimum value of -3 when x = 2, find

9. The function f ( x)  x 2  4kx  5k 2  1 has a minimum value of r 2 + 2k, where r
and k are constants.
(a) By using the method of completing the square, show that r = k – 1. [7m]
(b) Hence, or otherwise, find the values of k and r if the graph of the function
is symmetrical about x = r 2 – 1. [8m]

11. Sketch the graph y = x 2 – 8 x + 12 for -1 ≤ x ≤ 9. Your sketching should include


minimum or maximum point, axis of symmetry, y-intercept, two points marked
on the line and roots for the equation (if any) [12m]

12. The figure shows an aquarium without a lid in the shape


of a cuboid. Given its volume is 240cm3 and the total
surface area is 196cm2, Find the values of x and y. [10m]
