CAPTULO 6B
THE MEDIAN, QUARTILES AND INTERQUARTILE RANGE
You can obtain important statistical measures from a cumulative frequency graph. These
are useful when you want to compare two or more data sets.
1
n 1 on the cumulative
2
1
n 1 on the cumulative frequency axis.
4
3
The upper quartile (UQ) is at n 1 on the cumulative frequency axis.
4
The interquartile range (IQR) gives an improved measure of the spread of the data
and is given by Interquartile range = upper quartile = lower quartile
n is the total frequency.
The IQR is a measure of spread of the middle 50% of the data, so it excludes extreme
values.
EXAMPLE 1
The following grouped frequency distribution shows the time taken for students to solve a
puzzle. Using this data, draw a cumulative frequency diagram.

32 1 8.25

LQ = 9.5 seconds
3
32 1 24.75
4
UQ = 17.5 seconds
(d) IQR = 17.5 - 9.5 = 8 seconds
(c)
The cumulative graph can be divided up into other fractions, not just quarters.
Tenths are quite common and these are called deciles.
Percentiles divide the cumulative frequency into hundredths. The 70th percentile
70
will be at
n 1 on the cumulative frequency (cf) axis.

EXAMPLE 2
Solution
(a) The 20th percentile will be at
20
32 1 6.6
100
Draw a horizontal line at 6.6 to the
curve and then a vertical line down
to the time axis.
20th percentile = 9 seconds
(b) The 90th percentile will be at
90
32 1 29.7
100
Repeat the process of (a) at 29.7
90th percentile = 23 seconds
