BriefDescriptionandObjectives:
AVID(AdvancementViaIndividualDetermination)isaninternationallyrecognizedprogramaimedat
directingstudentstoacollegeboundpath.TheAVIDelectiveclassmeetsduringtheadvisoryperiod
andisdrivenbytheWICORmethod,whichstandsforwriting,inquiry,collaboration,organization,and
reading.TheAVIDstaff,students,andfamilieswillworktogetherasalearningcommunitytobuildthe
skillsnecessaryforacademicsuccess.Thiscourseismeanttoensurethatstudentswhohavethe
potentialandputforththeeffortcansuccessfullyapply,enter,andachieveinafouryearcollege.
Goals:ThegoalisthatallAVIDstudentsenterandexcelina4yearuniversityaftergraduationfrom
LVCP.Inorderforstudentstoachievethisgoal,studentsmust:
Completeallagrequirementsaswellashonorsandcollegelevelcourses.
Participateincollaborativetutorialsessionstwiceperweek,usingSocraticseminarsandthe
inquirymethodtoanalyze,synthesize,andevaluatecourseconcepts.
Completewritingpromptsthataredesignedtopreparestudentsforcollegewriting.
PrepareandtakethePSAT,SATI,SATII,andACTtests.
DemonstrateacademicsurvivalskillsincludingCornellnotetaking,publicspeaking,testtaking,
andgoalsettingstrategiesandtimemanagement.
Demonstrateproficiencyofresearchandcomputerskills.
Investigateuniversitiesofinterestandpossiblecareeropportunities.
Practiceandcompletecollegeapplicationsandfinancialaidforms.

Assignments:Thereareseveraldifferenttypesofassignmentsthatyouwillbeexpectedtocomplete
inthiscourse.
TutorialsTwiceaweek,studentswillbeexpectedtobringspecificquestionsfromtheirother
classesandworktogetheringroupstosolvethem.Tutorswillnotbehandingoutanswers,but
helpingthestudentstofindtheanswersthemselves.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytohavetheir
tutorialrequestformsfilledoutbeforetheycometothetutorialsession.Notesaretakenduringthe
tutorialsessionalongwithareflectionandsummaryofwhatwasdiscussedandlearnedduringthis
importantacademiccollaboration.ThesetutorialrequestformsandtutorialsareapartoftheAVID
grade.
AVIDBinderStudentswillbeexpectedtokeepa3threeringbinderwithallthenotesand
materialsfromtheirotherclasses.Theywillbetaughthowtoorganizethebinderanditwillbe
checkedweekly.WithinthebindertheywillbetakingCornellnotes,whichwillorganizetheirreview
materialandtheirlearning.Thisbindermustcometoclasswithyoueveryday!
LearningLogsandCornellNotesLearninglogsareclasslearningreflections.Ifyoudidnottake
Cornellnotesforaclassperiod,youarerequiredtocompleteaLearningLog.TheCornellnotetaking
formatwillbetaughttostudentsatthestartofthesemester.
AVIDPlannerAVIDstudentsneedtomaintainaplannerwheretheywillrecordassignmentsand
homeworkfortheircourses.Otherentriesshouldincludetests,quizzes,projects,scholarship
deadlines,clubmeetings,fundraisingdates,schoolextracurricularactivities,fieldtrips,school
holidays,andotherspecialoccasions.TutorswillcheckthecalendarweeklyaspartoftheBinder
Checkgrade.

Iwillbeanactivelearner,bepreparedforallclasseswithallassignedworkcompleted,take
Cornellnotes,andbeanactiveparticipantinallactivities.
5.
IwillcometoAVIDclasspreparedfortutorialsessionsbybringinghigherlevelquestions,my
AVIDbinderwithCornellnotes,andmytextbooks.Iwillaskquestionstohelpmypeersand
collaboratewithmyclassmatesandtutorstofindtheanswerstomyownquestions.
6.
Iwillparticipateinextracurricularactivitiesandcommunityservice.
7.
IwillprepareforandtakecollegeentranceexamssuchasthePSATs,ACT,andSATs.
WehavereadandunderstandtheAVIDCourseSyllabusandagreetosupporttheeffortsofthis
studentinmeetingtheAVIDCourseRequirementsoutlinedinthisdocument.Wealsounderstand
thattopreventdisruptiontootherstudentsandtheoverallcourse,studentsmaynotexittheAVID
programmidyearwithoutextenuatingcircumstancesandcompletinganexitinterview.
