Course: Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of the structure, composition, and behavior of matter. It is a laboratory-oriented
course that stresses observation of matter, classification of matter, measurement of chemical quantities,
manipulation of chemical investigations, and prediction of chemical phenomena. The laboratory
investigations emphasize the safe manipulation of laboratory apparatus and materials, accurate
observations, data collection and analysis, and the communication of data through formal lab reports. The
topics covered in Chemistry include: scientific measurement, matter and change, atomic structure, nuclear
chemistry, chemical periodicity, chemical bonding, chemical formulas of elements and compounds,
chemical reactions, stoichiometry, states of matter, representative gases, aqueous solutions, acids/bases,
and oxidation-reduction reactions.

Materials Needed
Students will need an organized way of maintaining their classwork and notes
1) Folder/Binder
2) Notebook/Notebook paper
3) Computer

Grades
Assessment 60% of total grade: (Tests/exams, most Lab reports, Projects)
Practice 35% of total grade: (Warm-ups, Group work, classroom activities, small quizzes)
Homework 5 % of total grade: (short take home practice sheets or reading from the text)

Absences
Each student will be responsible for all work missed while absent. Materials and information covered
during the missed class period will be posted on their Goggle Classroom page.

Tutorials
Chemistry is a class that builds on itself. It is very important to master each topic; otherwise it may
become very difficult to learn subsequent material.
Please, come to tutorials if you are have ANY questions about assignments.
Times are established by appointment.
All Houston ISD and Sam Houston Math and Science Technology Center Rules will be enforced in
my classroom.

Classroom Expectations and Rules

Be on time
Be respectful, responsible and ready
Keep cell phones and other electronic devices in your backpack, unless use is specifically
instructed for by the teacher

NOTE: Laboratory activities are fun and exciting; they are also an integral part of any science course. If a
student should choose to misbehave in the lab, they will be removed from the laboratory setting
immediately and suitable disciplinary action will be taken.
