Interview Questions

The questions used for each interview stayed the same, basically because it would be a lot of work to recreate
different questions for each counselor. So these were the questions that each CIT/Counselor was asked during their interview.
1. Do you remember writing your article?
2. Do you like your article or do you wish you hadnt written it/what would you change about it?
3. If you could write an article now, what would it be on?
4. How is Daily Double different now vs. when you were in the class?
Keep these in mind while reading all of the interviews.
Interview with Aaron Gelb

Aaron was interviewed and really
enjoyed seeing his articles, especially because
they were from farther back in the camps
history. He had a quote of the day that we found
and an article about a visitor that the camp had.
He didnt remember writing about her but he
did remember the quote of the day that he did.
Aaron was a big four square player and he was
so in the zone that when the campers came up
to ask for a quote, his quote was dedicated
to four square. He was really pleased to see
them again and wouldnt change a thing about
them. An article he would write today would
just be something random and fun, whatever
came to his mind. And lastly older kids did
more layout for the editions and they hand
wrote everything. There were more interviews
about counselors, more serious articles, and
no electricity used at all. One of the campers
had to make the edition by cutting and pasting
articles together onto a page and staple the
final copies together. But Aaron says that one
thing that has never changed is that everyone
still works super hard and creates awesome
articles and Daily Doubles.

Aaron Danas Drawings

I found a picture
that Aaron drew of a
Ninja Turtle when he was
a super young camper.
We asked him to redraw
the ninja turtle so we
could do a comparison
from then to now, and the
now is amazingggg!! But
so was the then picture,
which goes to prove how
talented he was and still
is.
Interview with Walker Anderson

Walker wrote three articles that I could find, one
called Henry V, one called Blast from the Past and
One Nation Under What? as well as a picture he drew of
a hand playing the piano and a picture of a man playing the
drums. He said he remembered drawing the drum set, and
being really proud of his artistic skills. He also remembers
his article called One Nation Under What but decided that
he would take the opposite view today than what he said in
the original article. Walker was glad he wrote his articles
and his reaction was Wow, Ive changed so much. He says
hed change the way he was towards music and hed be more
tolerant of other types nowadays. A big part that he felt like
could have been added to his articles was just more insight
on issues, because hes more knowledgeable today. The
article that he would write would be something on feminism
or the state of genders and all thats going on in society with
women. Theres been a lot of change within Daily Double
since Walker was a camper there, including that CITs whole
job was to type up articles only, and they didnt really interact
with the campers that often. Articles would also be published
a lot later than the day you would write them. Today they
go into edition that day or a day or few afterwards. But
when Walker took Daily Double, your article might not be
published until a week after youve written it. There used to
also be a lot less of the help columns, quizzes, and long term
stories that we see pretty regularly today. Apparently there
was also this ring mobile that spun around with different size
rings in the classroom and kids used to theorize what would
happen if all the rings were to line up perfectly, and lots of
super creative ideas came out of the structure. Walker also
told me that the guy running Daily Double back then was
called Steve and he banned pen names, which was a huge
shock to people and caused a lot of ruckus. Walker really
enjoyed being able to see his old articles and I hope this
gives people an insight to what the old Daily Double was
like when Walker was a kid here.

Interview with Natalie Burr

Interview with Josh Keehn

Josh wrote two articles that we could find, one called
Acronyms and one called Yes, and an old picture of him.
He liked the article about the pushups, and definitely wanted
to keep it. In acronyms, he thought he could have used some
funnier jokes, but he liked the spirit of it. He also thought
he had the idea of acronyms wrong and would change that. He
was against his Im weird part of the article and wouldnt
include that today. Josh doesnt remember the pushup contest
and thinks the witness of the pushup contest had his bread
buttered on Joshs side. But he does remember his acronyms
article, and he wasnt actually in Daily Double during this
time. He was really surprised because it got into the best
of the daily double. If Josh could write an article now, hed
write about fire hydrants. He and Cooper counted them on
their way to camp and were curious about how they worked
and the code for fire hydrants. Daily Double was different
from then to now because there were only 2 computers and
you wrote all your articles by hand and put them into the
wooden box we still have today. CITs had to type up kids
articles. Apparently Daily Double was a social scene, and I
definitely think it still is today. Also Josh thinks that it would
have been cool if they showed you how to write an article
but he definitely didnt want it to be like school and thinks
its such a great thing that kids could write about a pushup
contest and it would be read by a lot of people. The actual
Daily Double editions were smaller back then as well. They
were only 2 pages double sided, whereas now, they can be
five or six pages double sided. There were also more comic
strips and drawings.

Now that Natalie is a CIT and real-life
teenager, she things that she was perhaps too cynical in
her writing. When I wrote the article, I was probably
making fun of teenagers for being shallow because I
was scared to be a teenager, she says. Though she can
speculate, she has no memory of writing the article.
Shes glad she wrote the article, but today would
probably have a more positive attitude. I wouldnt
be so hard on teenagers! Most of us arent that bad.
Maybe now she would make fun of adults, instead.

Natalie wrote for a class called Megazine,
a magazine class that ran alongside the Daily Double
when she was a camper. Most of the articles were
handwritten, and there were a lot more drawings, as
well as more focus on fictional pieces instead of newsrelated journalism. It was taught by Lacey Drucker,
Joe Gamache, and Jonah Durning-Hammond they
were quite the crew, but I dont know if they can
beat the Walker-Emily-Claire trifecta that runs Daily
Double now.

Interview with Emily DAngelo

Emily wrote 2 articles that we could find while
she was a camper in Daily Double. One of the articles
was about Tobys mysterious facial hair and the other
was on the construction at camp that was going on while
she was a camper here. She definitely remembers writing
it because when she wrote the article, the counselor got
yelled at by the CRS people for criticizing their work!
Emily was freaked out about getting into trouble with
the CRS people but luckily she didnt. She also wouldnt
change anything she wrote about because she liked it.
Emily also liked it because she thought it was funny that
she tried to use big vocabulary and was trying to sound
super smart. Today, an article that Emily would write
would be on how crazy it is in Daily Double now, how
hard it is to make the Daily Double editions and what
the CITs and counselors actually did to make them. The
differences from when she was a camper to now is that
Daily Double was in a different building then and there
were only 2 computers. The campers handwrote all of
their articles and the CITs typed everything. The people
who ran it from then to know when Emily went there
was Steve, Mike, Abby and Walker, and now Walker,
Emily and Claire.

Editors Note: We included these articles

because we thought it was interesting
how they demonstrate Daily Double
writers tackling big, controversial issues
more so than you see today. Is the Daily Double better off sticking to quizzes,
advice columns, and crazy stories, or
was it better off back when the class was
tackling more serious topics? What do
you think?

Editors Note:
We hope you enjoyed the chance to read
some of these classic articles!
Thanks to Alex for tackling this big project
- she found some cool stuff in the archives,
ran all over camp interviewing people,
and did a lot of great reporting.
