It has been reported from Southern Railways that on August 8, a total of 226

wooden boxes containing soiled currency was booked by Indian Overseas bank from
Salem junction to Chennai Egmore under "said to contain" Railway Receipts. An
amount of Rs 5.78 crore was stolen from 5 boxes out of the 226 boxes on a VPH
(high capacity parcel van) from Indian Overseas Bank Salem to RBI Chennai. An
escort strength of Deputy Superintendent, Circle Inspector, Sub-inspector and 6
other ranks of Armed Reserve Salem/ Tamilnadu police was provided. Loading was
done directly from truck to the said VPH in presence of local police. whereas the
consignment was booked under said to contain RR, loading was not witnessed by
Railway authorities as per the provisions. The Parcel Van was provided with pad lock
on doors and was also sealed-- which was intact at the time of departure of train.
The robbers gained entry in the coach of Salem-Chennai Egmore Express by cutting
an opening on the roof of one of the coaches where boxes containing the currency
were kept.
However, when the incident matter was immediately informed to Railway Police
Force (RPF), GRP, Forensic Lab, Fingerprints etc.
The Railway Protection Force, Egmore division, has registered a case in this regard
and investigation has started.
DG/RPF has ordered for intensive investigation and machinery has been activated
for early detection of the case. Special Teams have been formed and track search
has bee done by RPF. Every effort is being made to detect the case.
