Grade 8 ELA

Classroom Management Plan

Building a Positive Learning Environment

Build positive relationships with students

o I think this is done primarily by spending time with students. As a teacher, I try to
make personal (non-academic) contact with every student, every day. Even if it is just
a Hi, how are you doing?. This demonstrates to students that I care and recognize
them as people and individuals.
o It is also important to show students respect at all times. This includes instruction,

casual conversations, and discipline techniques.

Build respect and positive relationships between students
o It is important that students build relationships with each other to be comfortable in
the classroom. A student being comfortable in their learning environment is crucial
for their ability to learn and question.
o I will achieve this in my classroom through team building, group work, and instilling
the rule of respect in my classroom.
Building a classroom climate
o Ensure the needs of all students are met. If my school does not provide a
breakfast/lunch program, I will try to ensure that I have resources in my classroom,
such as snack foods any student may take if they are hungry. If my school does
provide a breakfast/lunch program, I will support this program.
o I will ensure that I build student confidence and support any questioning.
o Implementing a variety of teaching strategies that incorporate different perspectives
and cultural contexts to build a community of understanding and open-mindedness
o Promote student critical thinking, and content relation to students lives to promote an
engaging atmosphere.

Classroom Expectations

Fall 2016
Grade 8 ELA

Show respect to themselves, others, and the classroom

Be willing to work to be best of your ability
Come to class prepared with adequate materials (pen/pencil, binder and paper, required

book, etc.)
Arrive to class on time
Use class time effectively in completing assignments
Take responsibility for your learning
Ensure that cellphones are away during instructional time or while we are having

discussions
Notify the teacher you will be missing class
o Get notes/missed assignments from a classmate
o Talk to the teacher about missed assignments and due dates

Students are invited to re-do any assignment that received a grade of less than 90%. Re-dos may
only be done once per assignment and it must be an individual assignment, not group or partner
projects. Students wishing to re-submit an assignment are asked to speak to me before attempting
their re-do.
Intervention Plan

The Bump System

o With minor infractions, such as talking to a neighbour during instruction or being on a
cellphone, I will use techniques such as proximity, eye contact/the teacher look to
ask student to stop the behaviour without interrupting classroom proceedings. My
next step would be to pause my instruction and wait until students stop the behaviour.
If the behaviour persists, I will use the students name to ask the student to stop. After
every intervention, I will show the student respect and remember to say thank you
for stopping the behaviour.
o If poor behaviour persists after using low level responses, I would continue with the
bump system and provide the student with a choice, and follow up on their choice. If
student behaviour continues, I will remind them of their choice and give them
instruction on what to do. To diffuse a power struggle, I would provide the student an
opportunity to take responsibility for their behaviour. Beyond this point, I would turn
to administration and implement school policies to deal with the behaviour. I do think
that having a conversation with the student is also an important aspect of classroom
management. Sometimes, it is very beneficial to get to the root of a problem through

conversation. There may be a situation between students, or a situation at home that is

causing the student to act out in class.
