ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS

Q.1

A main beam for a timber floor structure has an effective span of 16 ft. Sheathing
attached to the compression edge prevents lateral torsional buckling. Design a suitable
beam using Caribbean Pitch Pine (Select Structural) Dimension Lumber. (N.B. Bearing
check not required).
Design Data:
Loading: D = 250 lbs/ft (including self weight); L = 450 lbs/ft.
Beam depth, D = 14 ins (nominal)
1<D/B < 3
MC < 19%,
Normal temperature conditions

Q.2

A ground floor column in a building is designed as fixed at the base, pinned at the top
and unrestrained about both axes. The column has an overall height of 12 ft. Check the
adequacy of a nominal 10 x 10 Caribbean Pitch Pine (No. 1) section for this column.
Design Data:
Loading: D = 40 kips;
L = 60 kips
MC < 19%,
Normal temperature conditions

Q.3

A typical truss forming a timber roof system with a clear span of 32 ft. is shown if Fig. 1.
The axial forces in members AB, BC and AF are given in Table 1. Design member AF
for combined axial tension and bending using Southern Pine (Select Structural). All
members are nominal 2 in. thick and the joints are formed with a single diameter bolt.
