Giraffe

A giraffe is an African mammal which is widely known, thanks to its

incredible height. The scientific name for the giraffe is Giraffa
camelopardalis. The giraffa is derived from the Arabic word zirafa,
which means giraffe. The camelopardalis is a reference to the fact
that early visitors to Africa thought that giraffes might be a cross between
camels and leopards, since they have the humped backs of camels and
the spots of leopards.
The giraffe's scattered range extends from Chad in the north to
South Africa in the south and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the
east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open
woodlands. giraffes are also held in captivity in zoos and conservation
parks in many parts of the world, for the people who want to see these
animals in person without taking a safari trip.
At first sight, a giraffe looks rather bizarre. The animals have long
necks and legs, with the front legs being slightly longer than the back
legs, so that giraffes appear to have a sloped or humped body structure.
A giraffe's coat is tawny, with orange brown spots. Giraffes also have
thick, muscular shoulders to support their necks. They also have dark
purple prehensile tongues which are used to grasp and manipulate
things.
Giraffes are herbivores that are highly selective in choosing food.
Most of their food is the leaves and young shoots of trees or shrubs.
Their long necks and long tongues are also very handy pick up leaves
on tall trees, especially acacia trees . Like the camel, the giraffe can
survive a few days without drinking. His body still be hydrated because
giraffes can rely on fluids from the leaves.

Spending most of the day eating, a full-grown giraffe consumes

over 45 kg (100 lb.) of leaves and twigs a day. The male giraffe is both
taller and heavier th an the female. Giraffes sleep less than two hours a
day. In general, they sleep with their feet tucked under them and their
head resting on their hindquarters.
Many female giraffes live in small social groups, while males have
been known to fight over territory and partners. The lifespan of a giraffe
is around 20 years, with captive giraffes generally living longer.
In many zoos and wildlife parks, giraffes serve as an attraction.
Giraffes have been killed for their meat and hide. So to prevent the
extinction of giraffes,we should be more concerned about them.
