Earths Biggest Volcano


-on the floor of the Pacific Ocean lies a giant that has been sleeping for 145 million
years
-its called TAMU MASSIF (underwater volcano)
-on September 5, 2013, the possibility of its nature as a single volcano was announced.
-William Sager, a marine geophysicist from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences at the University of Houston began studying the volcano in 1993.
-the name Tamu is taken from the initials of Texas A&M University, where Sager taught.
-MASSIF, which means massive in French, is a large mountain or a section of the
planets crust.
-its size is covering an area roughly equivalent to the British Isles or the state of New
Mexico. Located about 1,000 miles east of Japan.
-it covers an area about 120,000 sq. miles about a third of the way from Japan to
Hawaii.
-second largest known volcano in the Solar System
