1. Hints: Location, Above the Focus, Earthquake

Word: _ P I_ _ N T E _ (Epicenter)

Epicenter – part of the Earths surfaces directly above the focus of an earthquake.

2. Hints: Landform, Steep Slopes, larger than hills

Word: M _ _ N T A _ I _ (Mountain)

Mountain – is a landmass that projects above its surroundings and is larger than
hills.

3. Hints: Instruments, Detect and measure intensity, Record earthquakes

Word: _ _ I S M O _ R A P _ (Seismograph)

Seismograph – is an apparatus to measure and record vibrations within the Earth

and of the ground.

origin.

Our country, the Philippines, is situated in a place where Plate Tectonics is very evident- the
Ring of Fire. It is a long chain of volcanoes and other tectonically active structures that
surround the Pacific Ocean. The Ring of Fire is one of the most geologically active areas on
Earth and a site for frequent earthquakes and powerful volcanic eruptions.
- Did you know that the ground we stand on is always moving?
- How is that so?
- Below the crust on which we live is the Earth’s Mantle.
- 100 km including the crust is called the lithosphere.
- What lies beneath the mantle is called the Asthenosphere.
- The Asthenosphere is also solid but the upper part is softer due to higher
temperature.
- In some ways, the consistency of the asthenosphere can be compared to a butter. It
can be solid but also can be press and molded.
- Difference between temperature in the upper and lower part of asthenosphere allows
conviction to occur.
- Conviction in the asthenosphere forms the plate tectonics.
- According to the theory of plate tectonics – the entire lithosphere of the Earth breaks
into numerous segments called plates.
- Can you see the arrows? What does the arrow imply?
- The arrow shows the direction of the movement of the plates moving and the other are
the fault lines
- The Earths has small and large plates, there are seven relative larger plates and several
smaller ones including the Philippine Plates
- Can you recall the seven larger plates?
- The African Plate, Antarctic Plate, Eurasian Plate, North American plate, South American
plate, Indo Australian and the pacific plates.
- Whether larger or smaller plates, these plates relate to natural phenomenon or
geological activities such as earthquakes, volcanisms and mountain formations.

To better understand the concept of plate tectonics, you are going to perform a simple activity.

- This map shows the Earthquake distribution around the world, the dark areas of the
map are the earthquake epicenters.
- Take note of the areas that are closely situated. Based on the map, these how are
earthquakes located.
- The worlds earthquake is not randomly distributed over the earths surface. They tend to
be concentrated with map in our world.
- Where are they located?
- Some are located on the edges of the continents, some are in the mid continents well
others are in the ocean.
- What does the map show’s?
- This map shows the Earths major volcanoes.
Take note: the dark dots are the active volcanoes.
- And how are volcanoes distributed?
- Volcanoes too are the not randomly distributed, majority of them are found along edges
of some continents.
- And where are they situated?
- Majority are found along the edges of some continents particularly in the western coast
of North and south America, East and southeast asia
