Psalm 74 is a lament. Possibly written after


Israel 's sanctuary had been destroyed by
enemies. The Temple had been violated. Israel
is compared to a harmless dove and the
enemy to a raging beast. The scripture
elsewhere instructs Christians to be wise as
serpents and harmless as doves. The enemy
of our souls is also described as a roaring lion
that goes around seeking to devour. Lions that
are close to death and final defeat are often
like this. The psalmist appeals to the honour
of God's name and asks for help, knowing that
such a help will bring people to praise His holy
name. The prayer is to vindicate His name
and save the people. Like the Psalmist we can
pray with authority, appealing to the person
