Coursebook criteria

There are some criteria that reviewers, administrators, teachers, learners and educational
advisers use to decide whether a book should be published or not. They agree also that no list
of criteria can be committed without any modification. Here is some of these criteria of
checklist.
1. Rational: why the book is designed.
2. Availability: is the book available in the market, is it easy to contact the
representatives.
3. User definition: for whom the book is intended for. Use of standards to know
which level has the learner.
4. Layout/ graphic: if there is space to write or overloaded pages, colorful images...
5. Accessibility: Are the materials and the content accessible and comprehensive to the
learner. Does the book include methods of signposting to facilitate revision for the
learner.
6. Linkage: do the units and exercises connect in term of theme, situation, topics. Is the
text coherent.
7. Selection/ grading: select and organize information from easy to difficult
8. Physical characteristics: is there space to write in the book, can we use it more
than once. Is it robust, large or heavy.
9. Appropriacy: is it appropriate at that level of maturity, is the language appropriate.

10. Authenticity: is the content authentic, taken from the real world or artificial.
11. Sufficiency: can the book stand on its own or has to be supported by additional
materials provided by the teacher.
12. Cultural bias: the culture aspect of the target language of the book should be
appropriate for the learner.
13. Stimulus/ practice/ revision: is there sufficient practice for the learner to
consolidate his English. Are self-checks provided.
14. Flexibility: can the materials be modified according to the situation.
15. Guidance: does the book provide advice to the teacher to present the lesson.
