The end of the era of good feeling

At the age of Washington, only the white landowner male could vote
in 1820 white
man independently of their wealth could vote
(the age of the common man).
At the beginning voting was aloud so the workers were afraid of their superior then the
voting changed to be secret written ballots. (The woman and black people still could not
vote.)
First modern election: the election of 1824
The election of 1824 is called the 1st modern election because it was the 1st election which
party leader no longer had exclusive control over the nomination process.

Quincy Adams, John c. Calhoun, William Crawford, Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson.

Adams in office
Adams was not supporting by the congress, there was no cooperation from them. Adam was
loose constructionist; the congress was a strict constructionist, favouring a states right over
central power. Thus, the congress rejected all his proposals.

The Democratic Party


The supporters of Jackson formed the Democratic Party and chose to nominate Jackson for
the presidency in 1828. The opposition, now known as the National Republican Party
supported Adams for a re-election. It was a landslide victory for Jackson because he was in
favour of common people hiding high offices; whereas, Adams hided only rich people in high
offices.

The return of two political parties which remain until today. Party competition forced
both parties to clearly define their position.

The development of a strong executive. Jackson was the 1st president to use the veto
extensively to express his political will.
Jackson revolutionized the presidency by setting ass a model for every president.
He demanded elected and not appointed judges.
