BACKGROUND
Dagupan City, which is widely known as The Milkfish Capital of the Philippines, was
known as Bacnotan. It was a marshland covered with mangrove and nipa palm trees. It is also
surrounded by shore and riverbanks which serves as the main source of living of the natives.
Later on, the place was made by the Spaniards asitio.It was renamed as Nandaragupan where
commercial centers were once stood after it was rebuilt from the Malong Revolt in 1661 which
caused a big fire. In 1710, it became a town which simply called as Dagupan. It was derived
from local Pangasinan language which means gathering place as it became a regional market
center for centuries.
Dagupan City is now a 1st class city in Pangasinan, Philippines. It was classified as a
chartered city in the province of Pangasinan located in Lingayen Gulf, one of the islands in
Luzon. Aside from the abundance of fresh milkfish (bangus) in the city, it was also a Home of
the Worlds Longest Barbecue on May 03, 2003 during the celebration of the Bangus Festival
having a measure of 1,007.56 m (3,305.64 ft).

Dagupan City is a topnotch destination of illustrious past as it treasures the events of
historical significance and rich cultural heritage in Philippine History.

Gabaldon Building

General Douglas MacArthurs Headquarter


The Gabaldon Building which serves as a central edifice of the West Central Elementary
School I was constructed in 1909. It was named after IsauroGabaldon,an assemblyman who
authored Act No. 1801 or Gabaldon Act. It is the oldest school house in the city which has an age
of 107 years old from its establishment. It also serves as the Provincial Capitol of Pangasinan
from 1942 until 1945. Furthermore, it also became the headquarters of the United States of
Americas South Pacific Area Command during the end of World War II.
A marker in front of the building states: On this site, the West Central Elementary
School I, Home Economics Building, Dagupan City was used by Gen. Douglas MacArthur as his
official headquarters after his landing in Lingayen beach on 9 January 1945 to liberate the
island of Luzon thus fulfilling his promise to the Filipino people I Shall Return.

The Ferrocarrile de Manila Dagupan opened its services on November 24, 1892 which
was known as the Manila Railway Company (MRC). It traversed the 195-kilometer long railroad
track from Manila to Dagupan City. According to folks in the city, it was the same train used by
Dr. Jose P. Rizal, our national hero, when he visited Leonor Rivera in the city.

Museona Dagupan

The Museona Dagupan (Museum of Dagupan) serves as the shelter of artworks,


sculptures, paintings ang other artifacts in connection with Philippine History. It was replete with
well-known paintings of National Artists in our country. In connection with, VictorioEdades, a
National Artist, showcased his masterpiece along the Edades Hall. Furthermore, the Dagupan
City is one of the few places which owned two national artists, namely: VictorioEdades and
Salvador Bernal in theatrical design.

The Old Dagupan City Cathedral underwent adverse events, it was burnt and a witness of
love lost, from its origin until it was restored on its current state. The architectural design of the
confession box, the fourteen Stations of the Cross, the main altar, the intricate wood carvings of
the altar would fascinate individuals who devotionally praise our LORD. In addition, the
ambiance of history and religion would be felt through the architectural design of the church, its
furniture, and the landscapes.
It witnessed the final battle of the Kaituneross against the Spaniards within the church
grounds on July 21, 1898. The Spaniards surrendered which signifies the victory of Katipuneros.
In addition, the church reflects the broken heart of Dr. Jose p. Rizal, the National Hero, as the
legendary Leonor Rivera married with Henry Kipping, a British engineer who set up the first
railway system from Manila to Dagupan- the Ferrocarrile de Manila Dagupan.
Tondaligan Beach

One of the most visited beaches in Dagupan, the Bangus Capital of the Philippines, is the
BonuanTondaligan Beach. Its fine sands and numerous coconut trees attract people all yearround, but the beach area quite large so theres no need to worry about running out of good
spots. You may rent one of the nipa huts here for a place to stay in and several vendors also sell
freshly-caught fish.

The Bonuan Blue Beach is nice for family picnics or friend getaways but not only that.
According to history, it was one of the landing sites of the Liberation Forces on January 9, 1945.
This stretch of beach in Dagupan City features a Japanese Park, the Tondaligan Park and the
MacArthur Landing Marker.

Bangus Festival

Bangus Festival is one of Philippines most elaborate celebrations. Popular for its unique
cultural fusions, this is a popular tourist attraction.The city is well-known for its delicious bangus
products. Every year, tourists from all walks of life make their way to the city to tantalize their
taste buds with this unique delicacy. Part of this festival is the famous kalutaneddalan which
citizens gather in lane through the street of de venecia highway and grill bangus.

TASTE OF DAGUPEO

Fried Bangus
Dagupan is known for its milkfish or the so called
Bangus. One of the best products of the city is the
bangus. Every year, the city is celebrating the bangus
festival on the month of April that is mostly visited by
tourists from various provinces. Bangus can be cooked
in various ways- it can be fried, grilled and goes along
with vegetables. With the God-given resources like
rivers and ponds, bangus is the most popular protein
rich food in the place. In 2003, the city was recognized
by the Guiness World Record having the longest grilled
bangus in the street
PigarPigar (Beef)

Aside from bangus, Dagupan is also known for the


viand called Pigar-Pigar. It is a dish made up of beef
with cabbages and onions. It may come along with
calamansi or sili and it all depends with the buyers
trip. Every cafeterias and canteen in the place offers
such dish because it is commonly part of the meal and
sold
out.

Kaleskes
Kaleskes in Pangasinan means intestine. The
Pangasinan version of kaleskes is almost similar to
sinanglao of the Ilocos region. Like pigar-pigar,
kaleskes mainly consists beef and it may include pale
or pancreas that gives more taste. However, customers
can also add some dugo and/or sebu. The dish is
believed to be originated in Herrero-Ferrer Street of the
City. But Galvan street vendors and stalls offer also
such dish.

Here are some of the well known restaurants in the city of Dagupan.

First in the list is the Matutinas Seafood House. As what the name suggests, it is where
will you can find the taste of different seafoodslike crabs, prawns as well as the famous
bangusdagupan. Also, they also offer pigar-pigar and kaleskes.

El Ciudad Elmina managed and owned by the city mayor, is known for its ambiance and
with the totally great experience it gives to its customers. The restaurant is on a fishing village
where you can have the experience to catch fish. The most well known dish of the restaurant is
the crispy hito because of the different taste. It was once being featured in the Kris TV where the
host experience fishing and cooking the fish they caught.
