Property- An attribute, quality, or characteristic of something. E.x.


weight, cost, porosity, crowded, distance, location, unsafe, texture
colour.
Population- a particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an
area or country from shore of all of pirate attacks in a region during a 3
month period. (122.5 92.1,10.2)
Paramater- Average distance from shore (km) of all pirate attacks (90.5
km), ; E.x. total population, average age % female.
Sample- distances from shore (km) of a sample of pirate attacks in a
region during a 3 month period. (122.5,92.1,189.9,)
Statistic- Average distance from shore (km) of sample of pirate attacks
in a region during a 3 month period. (99.4 km); E.x. %employed, %
who drive car to work, average age.
Sample Statistic Population Parameter
Data- The measures we use to descrive the properties of samples and
population
Categorical data- E.x. sedimentary, science, miscellaneous
Boolean data- E.x. true or false
Continuous data- E.x. height of the average university student,
graduating GPA.
Discrete data- E.x. number of trees over 5 feet tall in a forest, number
of robberies in a city this year.
Ordinal (ranked) data- E.x. small, medium, large
Variables and constants- E.x. TA ~ Tg- 9.8A
Data vs. information Information is data that have been analyzed,
synthesized, thought about and processed by humans.
