A Days Wait
In the short story A Days Wait a young boy of nine years, living in America, gets sick
with influenza and has to stay in bed. His father calls the doctor, who comes and takes
the boys temperature, which is measured to be 102F. The doctor gives him three
kinds of medicine and tells the father there is no need to worry unless the temperature
rises to 104F. The young boy stays in bed, but does not seem to acknowledge what is
happening around him, and he does not seem to listen to the story his father is
reading aloud to him. He only stares at the foot of the bed in front of him. The father
tells the boy to get some sleep, and then the father goes hunting for a while. When he
returns, he is told that the boy would not let anyone enter his room because he is
afraid his sickness is contagious. The father enters his sons room and finds him in the
same position as he left him. The boys temperature is taken again, still being at
102F, with nothing to worry about. The father tells him to keep calm, but his son
suddenly asks how long he has left until he has to die. His father is shocked and
explains that people do not die from a fever of 102F. The son then tells the father that
he has heard from a boy in France that people has died from a temperature of 44C.
His father tells him that there is a difference in temperatures in America and Europe,
like there is with kilometers and miles. After hearing this, the boy is relaxing and he
does not worry for the rest of the night, but the next day the boy starts complaining
about unnecessary things
