When you finish

reading, go back to
the revision you
began in class today
about your club book.
Refer to the feedback
your partner gave
you in class. Use this
feedback to continue
revising your work.
Then read over your
revised writing with a
critical eye.

Read and also

write about your
reading. You will
probably be
reading your
club book for a
bit, and then
perhaps your
club may have
decided that
you also keep
another book
goingthats up
to your club.

Write a two-page
entry about what
you notice and
think. What might
the author be
saying about not
only that
character, but
about people, in
life?

Keep jotting
answers to these
questions: What
are the problems
that the main
character is facing?
Where in the story
is the main
character facing
that problem?

Jot a few notes to

yourself about
what you might
change or add to
strengthen your
writing. Then work
on your draft,
making revisions

Revisingwrite
at least a page
and a half of
writing in total,
but this may be
new endings,
new beginnings,
drafts! Where is
the heart?

Use a flashback or
flash forward in
your drafting (see
notes about how to
do that on the back
of this page)

Using Past Memories to
Emphasize Meaning (Use this to guide your Friday Writing HW)
Tonight, please work some more on your draft, you might add a scene from the past or future to
emphasize the significant part of your writing. Heres an example from Juliana to again show
you what I mean.
Juliana is writing about meeting her dad, Chris, for the first time at a restaurant. But she
interrupts the story with this memory to emphasize how much this meeting matters to her and to
give some backstory.

I remember that when I was in preschool, I asked my mom if I had a daddy. She said, No, not
everyone has one. She reminded me that Alexandre in my class didnt have a daddy and that her
own daddy died when she was a teenager.
Then when I was in kindergarten my friend asked how come I didnt have a father. I just
dont, I said. He said I had to have a father, everyone had one. I went home and told my mom
that Joseph said there was no such thing as not having a father.
She said that Joseph was right. Everyone had a father because a mother couldnt make a baby all by
herself. But not everyone had a daddy. A daddy was someone who stayed with them and took care
of them. My father was a man named Chris who lived in South Africa. He helped make the baby but
did not want to be a daddy. Our family was just me and her with no daddy.
Juliana uses I remember as a starting point for her flashback, and this flashback leads up to and
gives importance to the story that she is writing. See if tonight you can try a flashback or a flash
forward. If that isnt what your draft needs, try some other significant revision.
