What are you doing still up?
Mornings only a few hours away.

Will has risen from his seat and is handing John the Ball.

Right . . .
JOHN
Try to get some sleep, son. We can
talk some more in the morning if
you like . . .

He APPEARS outside Wills cabin.

He HOLDS a STEAMING MUG.
DR. SMITH
A pre-dawn conference?
I not invited?

Dressed in NIGHT CLOTHES.

And why was

Surely, Professor, some
arrangements are being made to
apply a cessation to that infernal
racket?
20

ANGLE: WILL
WILL
Im sorry, Dr. Smith. I didnt
realize I was making so much noise.
DR. SMITH
Well, you were. And this hollow
bowl of a ship resounds like a gong
with every impact of your
fidgeting.

21

JOHN
Dr. Smith, I appreciate your
concern, but if you-22

Handing Will the STEAMING MUG.

DR. SMITH
Professor, if you please? Who is
the geologist and who is the
physician here? Morning comes very
early in these parts, dear boy.
And it wouldnt do at all to have
your brilliant, yet fragile mind
descending into madness . . .
23

ANGLE: PENNY

23

She POKES her HEAD out of her CABIN.

PENNY
Whats going on?
JOHN
Nothing, Penny. Go back to bed,
sweetheart . . .
24

ANGLE: PENNY

24

ANNOYED, as she is SLIDING CLOSED her CABIN DOOR.

PENNY
Well, excuse me . . .
25

ANGLE: WILL
Drinking from the mug.
WILL
Thanks, Dr. Smith.
DR. SMITH
Of course, dear boy. The warm milk
should act as a mild sedative and
you will be sound asleep before you
know it.

DR. SMITH (CONT'D)
I often use this method myself when
my mind becomes preoccupied. As to
your anxiousness, you know Im

EXT. THE JUPITER II -- MORNING

33

JUDY and MAUREEN ROBINSON are WORKING over SEVERAL TABLES of

SMALL PLANTS.
DON WEST and PROFESSOR JOHN ROBINSON are NEARBY, LOADING
EQUIPMENT into the CHARIOT
JOHN
Wheres Will? I thought he wanted
to go to the mountains with us to
check out the mineral deposits we
scanned during the fly-over.
Oh, John.

MAUREEN
I believe hes still

ANGLE: DON

34

HOISTING up some EQUIPMENT

DON
Were on a pretty tight schedule,
you know. But I think I can make
up the time driving if you want to
wait for him.
JOHN
No. If hes sleeping this late he
probably needs the rest.

9.

35

ANGLE: MAUREEN AND JUDY

35

JUDY
Do you want me to wake him?
John is LOADING the last equipment into the Chariot as Don is
CLIMBING in to the Drivers seat.
JOHN
Well manage without him. Were
just going to take some ore
samples. He wouldnt be able to
analyze them until we got back to
the ship anyway.
36

ANGLE: ALL

36

As the Chariot pulls away.

MAUREEN
Well, be careful!
JOHN
(calling)
Well be back before dark.
JUDY
Do you think hell be disappointed,
Mother?
37

ANGLE: MAUREEN AND JUDY

37

WATCHING the Chariot go.

MAUREEN
Oh, honey, I hope not. The short
days and nights on this planet have
everyones schedule off. Im
feeling it myself.
38

ANGLE: JUDY
EXAMINING the PLANTS on the TABLE.
JUDY
Penny says she thinks the short
daylight hours are whats making
these leaves brown. She said we
might have to set up some
artificial lighting to keep them
healthy.

38

10.

39

ANGLE: MAUREEN AND JUDY

39

Maureen is indicating some BRANCHES over-hanging the table.

MAUREEN
If we ran a string of lights from
here back to the Jupiter . . .
JUDY
Yes, but wed need to do something
to keep those horrible monkeythings or whatever they are away.
Thank heaven they seem to have
backed away from the ship. If Id
been hit with one more branch or
rock . . .
WILL is in the HATCH-WAY of the JUPITER II. He is PARTIALLY
DRESSED. Disheveled. Obviously just awakened.
WILL
MOM! Wheres the Chariot?
Dad and Don?
40

Wheres

ANGLE: MAUREEN

40

MAUREEN
Oh, Will! Im afraid you just
missed them. They were on a
schedule and your father said you
could do the analysis when they
brought the samples back. I hope
youre not too disappointed.
Its okay.
41

WILL
Just what I need--

ANGLE: WILL
UNHAPPY.

STANDING in the HATCH-WAY.

much success.

PENNY
(whisper)
. . . Where are you guys?
youre there . . .
43

I know

ANGLE: PENNY

43

As she is BOPPED on the HEAD by a SMALL BRANCH thrown from

one of the trees.
OUCH!
44

PENNY
Now, Im sure youre there.

ANGLE: PENNY

44

ADJUSTING the scanner.

PENNY
So why cant I see you?
A STICK THROWN from the TREES just MISSES her.

I wasnt sneaking. You just
werent playing attention. What
are you doing?
49

ANGLE:

PENNY AND WILL

49

She is adjusting the scanner again.

PENNY
(whisper)
. . . not so loud. Im trying to
get a look at whatever lives in
those trees.
Will doesnt look too interested.
WILL
Ahh, theyre just some kind of
monkeys or squirrels or something.
A BRANCH FLIES through the air, MISSING them both.
50

ANGLE: PENNY AND WILL

50

She is ANNOYED at his lack of enthusiasm

PENNY
I thought you were going with Dad
and Don to the mountains, anyway.
WILL
Yeah, well, I didnt.

I--OW!!

As Will is ALSO bopped with a stick.

51

ANGLE: WILL
ANGRY.

He THROWS a STICK back into the tees.

WILL
HEY! Cut it out! Those things have
been throwing stuff at us since we
landed and we havent even seen
them yet!

51

13.

52

ANGLE: WILL AND PENNY

52

DIVING for cover as a RAIN of DEBRIS comes from the trees in

response to Wllls throw.
WILL
HEY!!
PENNY
Will! Im trying to study these
things. At least get a look at
them. Now, youve got them all
stirred up!
53

ANGLE: WILL

53

THROWING another stick.

WILL
Well, they shouldnt be throwing
stuff at us!
54

ANGLE: PENNY

54

ANGRY!
PENNY
WILL! Itll take hours for them to
calm down if you dont leave them
alone. Im trying to make a study.

ANNOYED and FRUSTRATED.

ARMS WAVING in the air as he STALKS

WILL
Okay! Okay! Im sorry! You dont
have to be such a grouch!
56

ANGLE: PENNY
SHOUTING after him.
PENNY
Well, maybe some of us didnt get a
lot of sleep last night!

56

14.

57

ANGLE: PENNY

57

Turning back toward the trees.

Brothers!

PENNY
Sometimes I wish--OW!

As SHE is BOPPED with another stick.

PENNY (CONTD)
Now, cut it out!

EXT. A CLEARING IN THE WOODS -- DAY

58

DR. SMITH and the ROBOT are there. They are laboring to
create a SHELTER composed of WOOD POLES and MOSQUITO NETTING.
Dr. Smith DIRECTS while the Robot DOES the work.
The ROBOT is STRUGGLING to RAISE a WALL-POLE without TANGLING
in the NETTING.
DR. SMITH
Careful, Ninny . . .
not to twist it.

Take care

ROBOT
A less complicated plan would have
been to raise the netting once the
basic structure is completed.
59

ANGLE: DR SMITH

59

DR. SMITH
Perhaps. But then I should have
had to endure the peltings of those
Invisible Irritations while the
project progressed. And, as it is
you and not I performing the bulk
of this labor, the added difficulty
means nothing to me. So, continue.
60

ANGLE: DR. SMITH

LOOKING through the NETTING into the trees above.

60

15.

DR. SMITH
A pity there seems nothing to be
done to silence the incessant
chattering of those loathsome
creatures . . .
WILL ROBINSON is APPROACHING through the WOODS
WILL
Dr. Smith . . .
He is DIVING and WEAVING through a RAIN of DEBRIS thrown from
above.
61

ANGLE: DR. SMITH, WILL AND THE ROBOT

61

Will is HURRYING for the SHELTER. Dr. Smith HOLDS open a

FLAP of the NETTING for him to pass.
DR. SMITH
William! Hurry, Dear Boy! Youre
very nearly in time for the
dedication.
WILL
Wow! Youve done all this just
since this morning?
62

ANGLE: DR SMITH

62

Looking around in satisfaction.

DR. SMITH
Indeed. Not all of us are so
inclined as to snooze away the
entire day, William. Precious as
those few sunlit hours are on this
dreary little world . . .
WILL
The nets a great idea to keep out
the debris. Youve done an
incredible job . . .
63

ANGLE: DR SMITH AND THE ROBOT

Dr. Smith INDICATES the Robot.
DR. SMITH
And no help from this Automated
Oddity either.

63

16.
DR. SMITH (CONT'D)
But labor is as labor does and when
theres work to be done, never
fear, Smith is here . . .

64

ANGLE: WILL

64

GRINNING.
WILL
Right . . .
DR. SMITH
A few cushions and pillows to
manifest a suitable decor and this
cozy little retreat will be an
ideal-WARNING!
65

ROBOT
WARNING!

ANGLE: DR SMITH

65

IRRITATED
DR. SMITH
What is it now, you Computerized
Conundrum?
ROBOT
Object: Life-form on the netting.
Mass in excess of the test limits
for integrity of the material.
DR. SMITH
(fearful)
In excess . . . !?!
Will is LOOKING around.
WILL
Where, Robot? I dont see
anything.
66

ANGLE: THE ROBOT

66

INDICATING a SWELLING in the NETTING that DIPS down from the

ROOF. A CREATURE, a PRIMATE the size of a medium dog, is
TANGLED in the NETTING. It is PARTIALLY CAMOUFLAGED, its
appearance mimicking the COLORS and PATTERNS of the NETTING
and TREES around.

17.

ROBOT
Object: Life-form is masking its
physical appearance. Warning: Test
limits exceeded. Structural
failure is imminent.
67

ANGLE: WILL

67

Moving toward the creature.

WILL
We have to get it out of the net
before it brings the whole place-68

ANGLE: ALL

68

But it is TOO LATE as the weight of the Creature in the net

brings the whole place DOWN on their HEADS.
WILL
LOOK OUT!
69

ANGLE: DR. SMITH

69

He is ON the GROUND beneath some rubble.

He is DISPIRITED.

DR. SMITH
Oh, the pain . . .
70

ANGLE: WILL

70

EXAMINING the CREATURE still TANGLED in the NETTING. It

PEERS back at him with curiosity. There is a HINT of Wills
RED HAIR color now mimicked in the Creatures fur.
WILL
At least weve finally got one of
these things for Penny to look at
. . .
71

ANGLE: DR. SMITH AND THE ROBOT

The Robot AIDING Dr. Smith to his feet.
Oh, joy!

DR. SMITH
Help me up, Ninny!

71

18.

72

ANGLE: DR. SMITH

72

ATTEMPTING to RECLAIM some of his DIGNITY.

DR. SMITH
Hopefully, she can determine what
toxins would be appropriate for
ridding the forest of these hirsute
vandals. Some tainted fruit
scattered about the forest floor,
perhaps . . .
Will has PICKED UP the Creature, which CLINGS to him through
the net as if for COMFORT. The Creature has now CHANGED to
the COLOR of WILLS CLOTHING.
WILL
(scolding)
Dr. Smith!
73

ANGLE: DR. SMITH

73

BOPPED on the HEAD by a BRANCH thrown from the trees.

DR. SMITH
OUCH!!
74

ANGLE: DR. SMITH, WILL AND THE ROBOT

74

Will LAUGHS.
Dr. Smith looks INDIGNANT.
DR. SMITH
(outraged)
INDEED!
CUT TO:
75

INT. THE JUPITER II -- LATER

The GALLEY. JUDY, MAUREEN and PENNY are there looking over
the CREATURE which SITS on the TABLE. Will hangs back as
Judy FEEDS the Creature a small SNACK by hand.
JUDY
Oh, its just darling . . .
MAUREEN
Be careful it doesnt bite you,
Judy.

75

19.

PENNY
She shouldnt. Ive been handling
her for a while and shes just as
friendly as can be.
76

ANGLE: JUDY AND THE CREATURE

76

The Creature MIMICS the COLORING of Judys clothing.

Judy is SURPRISED.
JUDY
OH! Look at that!
that?

How does it do

MAUREEN
Its a female?
77

ANGLE: PENNY

77

PICKING UP the animal as it CHANGES to MATCH her coloring.

Yes.

PENNY
And shes a marsupial, too.

Will is trying to EDGE in.

WILL
The hair isnt really changing
color. Its just a clear tube.
Like a fiber-optics line. The
pigment of the skin underneath is
whats-JUDY
(interrupting)
Its just so CUTE!!
78

ANGLE: ALL

78

Will looks ANGRY at being interrupted.

WILL
. . . changing . . .
Penny SCRATCHES the Creature behind the ears.
PENNY
Shell even purr if you scratch
behind her ears.

20.

The Creature is LOOKING at WILL.

79

ANGLE: WILL

79

UNIMPRESSED.
WILL
Thats great . . .
Dr. Smith APPEARS, leaning his head into the Galley.
EATING a PIECE of FRUIT.

He is

DR. SMITH
I thought it my duty to report the
other members of the expedition
have returned.
80

ANGLE: ALL

80
Good!

JUDY
I cant wait for Don to see--

But the Creature SQUEALS at the SIGHT of Dr. Smith and

VANISHES from view.
WILL
Whered it go?
MAUREEN
Its gone!
DR. SMITH
Oh, dear. We simply cannot have
that loathsome creature at large
inside the spaceship! Itll be the
death of us all!
STARTLED, he DROPS his fruit to the table.
81

ANGLE: PENNY

81

She SEEMS to be CLUTCHING only empty AIR.

PENNY
No! Shes still here!
her.

Im holding

JUDY
She must be afraid of Dr. Smith.
Will is reaching out to TOUCH the invisible animal.

21.

WILL
What incredible camouflage ability.
No wonder we couldnt see them.
82

ANGLE:

DR SMITH

82

As the animal slowly FADES back into view.

DR. SMITH
Fuzzy misanthrope!
83

ANGLE: PENNY
Handing Will the Creature.
RED for Will.

83
It is visible again and TURNING

PENNY
(excited)
Dad and Don are back! I cant wait
to tell them about this! Watch
her, Will.
Maureen and Judy are HEADING AWAY also, leaving Will and Dr.
Smith ALONE with the CREATURE.
84

ANGLE: WILL AND DR. SMITH

84

Dr. Smith EYES the Creature cautiously.

DR. SMITH
Are you not also interested o
greeting the weary travelers?
Will is SETTING the Creature on the Galley Table.
WILL
Yeah . . . I guess shell be okay
down here.
85

ANGLE: DR. SMITH AND THE CREATURE

The Creature SNIFFING at Dr. Smiths DROPPED FRUIT.
Dr. Smith REACHES DOWN to TAKE the FRUIT away.
DR. SMITH
Give me that, you multi-hued
miscreant!

85

22.

86

ANGLE: THE CREATURE

86

Which turns BLACK and BARS remarkable LARGE TEETH.

GROWLS.

It

Dr. Smith is FRIGHTENED and BACKS AWAY.

William!
87

DR. SMITH
Wait for me!

ANGLE: THE CREATURE

87

EATING the fruit.

88

ANGLE: ZORRO

88

Pennys pet. He is POKING his head into the Galley to get a

LOOK at the CREATURE, which notices him.
89

ANGLE: THE CREATURE AND ZORRO

89

As the Creature TRANSFORMS into a DUPLICATE of ZORRO in both

FORM and COLOR.
90

ANGLE: ZORRO

90

FRIGHTENED. RUNNING from the Galley as the Creature

contentedly resumes EATING the fruit.
CUT TO:
91

EXT.

THE JUPITER II -- EVENING

91

EVERYONE gathered around a DINNER TABLE with the exception of

PENNY. She is NEARBY with the CREATURE. It has RESUMED its
natural form and is playing with a PIECE of FRUIT like a
BALL. Penny is coaching the animal to the delight of all,
except for Will and Dr. Smith.
Will looks BORED and Dr. Smith MISTRUSTS the animal.
JOHN
I could swear that little thing is
trying to entertain us.
PENNY
Oh, shes smart.
fast.

She learns so

23.

MAUREEN
Now, Penny, youre not planning on
trying to keep it, are you? Dont
you think you have enough pets?
92

ANGLE: PENNY AND THE CREATURE

92

The animal has rolled onto its back, its coloring mimicking
the mottled tones of the fruit it balances on the heels of
all four palms.
PENNY
No. They seem to have a very closenit family grouping. It would be
wrong to take one away and keep it.
JUDY
I just cant believe its so
friendly. After all the things
theyve throw at us.
93

ANGLE: DR. SMITH AND DON

93

DON
Yeah, its nice to finally get to
eat outside without the buzz of the
force-field. Why did they stop
throwing stuff, anyway?
DR. SMITH
Its treachery. Wait and see.
Mark my words, when we are least
expecting it, they will attack.
And no doubt, en masse, too!
94

ANGLE: PENNY

94

Shes picked up the Creature, which has CHANGED COLOR to

match her CLOTHES. She WALKS toward the table.
PENNY
Oh, Dr. Smith, dont be silly.
Theyre territorial. Thats all,
Weve been here long enough now
that they respect the camp as our
territory.
95

ANGLE: DR. SMITH AND THE CREATURE

Dr. Smith PEERS as it with DEEP SUSPICION.

95

24.

DR. SMITH
A spy! Probing our defenses!
Probably on a diabolical mission of
espionage.
The Creature HISSES at Dr. Smith and FADES from view, still
in Pennys arms.
96

ANGLE: DON

96
DON
Espionage? Really, Smith? Now,
thats not a subject youd happen
to know anything about, is it?
DR. SMITH
Mind your tongue, Major! Or I
suggest you sleep with one eye
open!

97

ANGLE: DON

97

LEAPING from his chair and GRABBING at Smith.

DON
(angry)
Just what the hell is that supposed
to mean?
JUDY
DON!
His quick movement startles the creature, which leaps from
Pennys arms to the table. It is barely visible.
PENNY
Youre scaring her!
98

ANGLE: JUDY AND DON

98

Shes up and leading Don away from the table.

JUDY
Don, why dont you and I take a
little walk?
The Creature has FLED across the table to Will.
his red hair, clinging to him for security.
PENNY
She sure likes you, Will.

It matches

25.

99

ANGLE: WILL

99

PUSHING the creature away.

WILL
Thats nice . .
100

ANGLE: MAUREEN

100

CONCERNED.
MAUREEN
Whats wrong, Will? Are you not
feeling well? You barely touched
your dinner.
WILL
Im okay. Dad, how did the fieldsurvey go? Did you find any
interesting specimens?
101

ANGLE: JOHN

101

JOHN
No.
Not much at all. In fact, a
spot-analysis was all that was
necessary. The samples were that
poor.
The Creature has begun to eat from some of the dishes on the
table.
WILL
(disappointed)
You didnt bring back anything for
me to analyze?
102

ANGLE:

DR. SMITH

102

UPSET.
DR. SMITH
Madam, is it necessary that this
anthropomorphic hair-ball be on the
table while Im trying to eat?
Its certain to destroy my repast.
MAUREEN
Penny, get her down.

103

ANGLE: ALL

103

As Penny LIFTS the Creature, it GRABS another handful of food

from a plate.
JOHN
Im sorry, son, but the spotanalysis was all--Penny! How much
does that animal eat?
PENNY
She has a very high metabolism.
The more she camouflages, the more
energy she uses. Her family must
spend all day eating just to keep
from starving.
104

ANGLE: WILL

104

BOLTING from his chair and away from the table.

WILL
(angry)
May I be excused, please?
The Creature in Pennys arms is WATCHING Will. It has turned
BRIGHT RED, hair standing on end in response to Wills
actions.
MAUREEN
Will?
105

ANGLE: ALL

105

As Will STALKS angrily toward the spaceship.

MAUREEN
Now, what do you suppose is the
matter with him?
JOHN
Hes feeling left out, I guess.
Upset because he missed the survey.
Penny HOLDS the Creature with PRIDE.
PENNY

all the attention.

informed diagnosis. If you dont

the rest of us dont?
108

ANGLE:

DR. SMITH

108

DR. SMITH
Nothing that isnt there before
your very eyes, were you not too
blind to see it.
109

ANGLE:

JOHN AND DR. SMITH

109

JOHN
Please, continue . . .
DR SMITH
Williams behavior is symptomatic
of a depressive state, These mood
swings have not simply manifested.
Theyve been going on for some
time. Witness the episode with the
ball only this last night past.
110

ANGLE:

DR SMITH

Abundantly pleased with how own expert opinion.

DR. SMITH
A boy, dear friends, a young man,
alone out here without, shall we
say appropriate companionship.
Female companionship. Surely, even
you can see hes suffering from
sexual frustrations.

28.

111

ANGLE: PENNY

111

She is SHOCKED and EMBARRASSED. Self-conscious now, herself.

She MOVES AWAY with the Creature in arms.
May . . .
112

PENNY
may we be excused now?

ANGLE: MAUREEN

112

ANGRY.
MAUREEN
Dr. Smith! That was uncalled for!
Embarrassing Penny that way! We
understand the pressures on the
children and we-DR. SMITH
Precisely the point, Madam!
are children, no longer.
113

They

ANGLE: JOHN

ANGLE: THE ROBOT

114

Dr. Smith. You wished to be
informed at the arrival of 19:30
hours. It is now that time.
Smith has ARISEN from the table, tossing aside his napkin.
DR. SMITH
Indeed. Professor . . . Madam . . .
Tasks await!

29.

115

ANGLE: JOHN AND MAUREEN

115

As Smith DEPARTS with the ROBOT.

DR. SMITH

it is, I wont like it.
